I was just wondering which you guys and girls chose to do and why. I have been tinkering with the idea of carrying my clubs again but haven't decided if it would effect my swing. Would my arms and shoulders get tired? or would it be easier than lugging my tour bag behind me on my pull cart. Just wanted to know your thoughts.

I carry, it adds to my workout for the round.

I have a "wrong image" in my mind that push/pull carts are for older or less fit folks.

Of course the research shows that I am costing myself something like 3-strokes per round due to fatigue.

Perhaps I will suck it up this year and try out a push cart for a few rounds this year.

carry bags are so light now that walking with them on my shoulders is no problem at all. I did the pull cart thing a few times and found it is just a pain in the butt to keep up with the stupid thing. You have to walk all the way around the green, be careful that it does not roll away on hills, and pushing/pulling that thing up big slopes is hard work. My arms and legs are much less tired just putting the bag on my shoulders. The only up side to the push cart is that you can carry a bunch of crap with you.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

Push cart and carrying.

When I am out for a quick session, say 9 holes, or even 18 when I am by myself, I carry. It is way quicker.
Also when I am practicing only, I am carrying.

When I spend more time on the course, say practicing then playing holes, or when I play a round with my buddies or a tournament, I use my push cart and a bigger bag, too.
It is easier to keep scores, when the scorecard is on the pushcart. Also I can hoist more stuff around (water, food)

I think carrying is also a good excercise. When I started, my shoulder and back was weak after 12 holes. Now I can go 18 without a problem. But that is only when I am quick. If I have to wait for others, I use a cart, because standing around is wearing me out more than walking.

Push cart or ride.

I hate carry bags because there simply do not allow me to carry everything I want. That's not even considering that I have bad knees and feet and a back that doesn't appreciate carrying. If I couldn't use a push/pull cart I would either ride all the time or play a heck of a lot less. I basically stopped carrying my bag shortly after I got back into game about 8 years ago or so. I was in good shape at that time due to being a runner, but my back would kill me after about 12 holes or so. Then a couple years later, the knees and feet became a problem (from running according to my doctor) and that made it almost impossible to carry a bag.

If I'm walking, I'm carrying. The course I walk most often has HORRIBLE pull carts, and I don't own one myself. The little extra exercise doesn't bother me. I too have the image that pull carts are for old farts... but I'm about to be 28 and certainly can't carry them as easily as I could when I was 18 (wayyy too much taco bell since then!)

I push or ride. Push for some 9 hole rounds (depends on how my knees are doing that day) and ride otherwise....

Ditto this!

My carry bag is very light (6lbs empty) and the dual strap system is just as comfortable as wearing a backpack. I also second the ease and freedom I get from not having to keep up with the push cart. I go where ever I can walk (everywhere except for dense of woods), I don't have to circumnavigate the green, and I always have all of my clubs and everything in bag right at my fingertips. The one great thing about carrying your bag is that never again will you have to hoof it back to the cart to get something that you need.

As a very young man I used a pull cart, but found it hurt my shoulder pulling the cart behind me, so I went to the carry bag. That was fine, but I'm not a young man anymore, my brother bought a Clicgear, I used it for several rounds and really like it, so I got one for Christmas.

I much prefer to walk over ride and I have found the push cart lets me stand up tall when I walk and my golf cost less. I also found with little effort I could "park" my cart in such a way that it doesn't roll so I don't have to constantly set the brake.

Now I just wish more of the new courses being built were more suited to walkers.

The push cart is definitely the way to go . While I still walk some rounds each year ( and will do so in Florida next month on vacation ) , I much prefer using my Clicgear push cart . While I am a fit 45-year old , I do have some chronic back injuries that limit my ability to ride in a cart . As my chiropractor told me , sitting puts 3X the stress on my lower back than standing .

Unless I am forced to ride in a cart in a tournament , I refuse to ride . Not only do I get sore and tight , but it actually takes more time to play in a cart over walking the course . -- K.

I agree with golfire6 on the time to play, all the cart does is take you to your ball faster so you have to wait to hit a shot. That waiting has more negative impact to my game then the fatigue from walking.

When I walk, about 80 % of the time it's with my no name Walmart push cart that will be replace this season with a clicgear push cart. I ride only when playing with a co-worker because his knee's are so bad he's been told he needs surgery on both of them. I like a push cart because I can put my full bag , with extra everything including wind shirts , socks and I have a small soft side cooler that holds a few waters and an ice pack under the the back of the cart out of the way. Only problem with walking at my age is after 36 holes my heals hurt to the point I can't walk right for 2-3 hrs after a round.

And many courses in Florida this time of the year won't let you walk, some idiots think a riding cart is faster than walking, speed down the fairway sure but in the long run I am usually waiting on the group ahead when carts are involved and 90* cart rule is in affect. because my push cart goes right to my ball to play ready golf. But many big name courses won't let you walk mostly a peak time because they still think it slows down play. I wonder if Say Tiger or AK showed up at one of these tracks would they make them ride?

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
