This is my cry for help!! I spend most of my weekends either playing or at the range working on my game. I have only been playing for about 8 months now but its an addition once I started I couldnt stop! So lets get to the point. I was at the range working on my short game witch isnt horriable but sometimes I hit a great chip shot but the ball runs to much I can get it to check sometimes and even come back other times but I dont know what im doing different my chipping stroke doesnt seem to change but I get different results. Anyone have any Ideas on how to get more consistant and how to pratice putting spin on the ball? Thanks!!

Just for some clarification, when you say that "you're at the range".......are you practising with the balls that you normally play, or are you using range balls?

There will be an enormous difference in the performance between the two.

There's a great article in either Golf Digest or Golf Magazine this month about spinning. It's really good. I recommend picking it up.

Whether you're spinning the ball with your thumb on a table-top or doing it with the club off of grass, the same concept applies. You must hit the ball with a descending blow.

For chipping I usually put the ball back in my stance a bit to help this and visualize hitting through to the front of the ball and into the ground with the face of the club if I want to spin it. Like kfowler said, picking up some tips from Golf Digest or Golf Magazine can help visualize this as well.

Fairways and Greens.

yes when im on the chipping green I do use my own balls and not range balls

With my normal "I'm not a teacher" disclaimer, I'll offer 2 items for consideration.

1st, I agree with NCGolfer. From my perspective, it's all about striking down on the ball and at least for me, continuing to accelerate through and committing to the shot.

2d, I focus on keeping my left wrist firm. I want to maintain a consistent angle on the shaft with my hands remaining ahead of the clubhead throughout the shot.

You need a ball that's going to let you spin (Pro V1, 330s, TP Black, etc.). The ball matters more than you think. After you have the right ball, put it back in your stance and swing.

Note: Not trying to give you advice but since your handicap is close to mine I can tell you what I do to get backspin.

If you have a 60* wedge with good grooves and a softer ball, you can try a quicker downswing so that the descending blow pops it up with alot of backspin. You can actually see the ball spinning after you do it, however there are a few more variables involved but that will help get you started.

Oh and practice alot

I have a theory....the ball must spin end over end to get that good "check" that you are looking for. I used to be very "handsey" and would come from too far inside on my chips/pitches and the ball would roll out far too much. A while back my instructor had me take the club back with more shoulder start and more straight back and up. The subsequent descending blow had the ball stopping on a dime (and I'm using old wedges). This has allowed me to be much more aggressive in trying to get to the pin. I say experiment with different approaches to get the best results.

You will be much better off checking the ball and letting it run out. It is a easier shot and much more controlable, not to mention that if you don't pull it off your ball could end up on the next fairway.

In order to spin the ball back it takes a sizable downward hit. Many of the Pro's say they don't like the spin, but b/c they hit the ball so hard it is unavoidable. My chips check very little. I plan for roll out and control the amount of roll out with the trajectory of the chip. If I don't want any roll out I'll use my LW. Off of the frog hair around the green its impossible for me not to check the ball; heck even my 8i checks with those chips.

play with some old timers. you know the type, they get up and down almost every time when they dont hit the green. these guys dont hit the ball trying to spin it, they hit it to a set distance and let it roll to the hole. theyre much more accurate this way, and unless youve short sided yourself this shot will serve you well almost every time. hitting a chip shot that stops after one hop looks great, but you prolly wont need it more than once a round at most. and if your trying to do that when you dont need to then youre losing strokes.

I wish there was some more pointers to places to find out how to do this...

It seems most of the articles i read about this generally focus on hitting longer wedge shots... and it's hard to find info on greenside chips.

Personally, I'm in a very similar boat to the OP. Though for clarification I'm trying to check my greenside chips. I used to think I didn't have the ability so I didn't bother. Then one day I went out and voila. I was checking several 5-10 yard chips and they just looked like they landed on glue next to the hole.

Since then....... no dice. So now it's a question of how do I do that on purpose everytime I Want to!

1. Get a ball that can spin
2. Clean your club before hitting
3. You need a fast swing to get spin, chipping it softly does not create much spin. You get some to break the speed of the ball a bit, but not enough to get it back.
4. Attack the ball from a downward angle, hands reach the ball first
5. The higher the shot, the easier for the ball to roll back. A ball coming in high will spin much further than one coming in low. The trick here is that the more you try to get the ball high by trying to lift the ball, the less spin you get. A downwards blow is essential for any shot where you want backspin

As for the swing, try moving the ball back a bit and put pressure on your left foot. The best way to get the feel and find out how you must hit is by practice. Go to the chipping green, move the ball around, change your angle of attack, move your weight around. The more different placements you practice from, the greater overall knowledge and feel you will get. Many players experience this voila! moment where they suddenly figure it out. By giving yourself some variables you are bound to find the right combination sometimes.

When I want to spin the ball with a chip shot I am a big fan of just opening the face a little bit, taking a shorter back swing and a longer follow through. Oh, have to have lag also but I have that on all shots.

Just tried out my new Z TP wedge today.... have been using a cheap tom watson adams golf wedge. And I can actually see the ball trying to hold on the first bounce now... then rolling out... actually holed my 3rd chip shot with my first outing testing out my wedge.

Though I still havent figured out how to stop the ball on the second bounce like i did on accident several times one day.

And the other day I played with my dad and brother for the first time in a few months after going to visit and everyone was really impressed when I hit and spun back a 40 yd wedge shot..... unfortunately, the ball landed exactly where I wanted but I assumed it'd roll like always... if it DIDNT roll back it would have been such a great shot...

taking a shorter back swing and a longer follow through.

IMHO, that is it right there. You HAVE to be accelerating through the shot. I see sooo many dumped and chili dipped chips from guys trying to stab at the ball. I see guys have success with that little jab motion chip. But it looks terrible and when they dump it they really dump it bad. The bad ones will move about 2".

If your follow through is longer than your backswing, you are probably accelerating through the shot. If you are trying to check the ball with a hard distance ball, worn out and dirty grooves and flippy wrist, you best be close to a scratch player to have success consistently.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
