Topping with irons

I have a mostly mental and partially physical block that makes me top the ball with irons off the fairway on occasion.

Mentally, I feel like if I hit down on the ball then I'll hit it fat and hit a divot further than the ball.

Physically, I'm not sure how to approach hitting down on the ball. I was always the type of person who tried to hit under it and that's probably what's holding my handicap where it is.

I have tried making my first move towards the target, but when I do that, the club lags behind and I hit it fat.

Any ideas? Tips? I don't get the mental block until I hit a bad shot, then it sticks with me for the next few holes.

You might be swaying. If you sway too much, you'll get inconsistent results. You could be lifting your head too. We may need to know more (video, where the ball goes, etc.) to diagnose the problem fully.

Line up a few ball on the range at right angles to your target line. Lay a towel (folded lengthways once or twice) down 10 inches behind the row of balls also at right angles to the target line. (see diagram)
Hit 20 shots this way to get a feel of the club travelling down and over the towel into the turf after the ball.
It sounds like you have the right idea and with this drill there is no way to do it incorrectly.

If you're laying turf over the ball when you feel like you're hitting down, it's probably because you just throw your hands way in front of the ball and stop moving your body.
You need to keep your chest turning or else you will hit the ball way fat.
Try and keep your head still through out most of the swing. Denver nuggs was pretty much on with his swaying comment.

I had the same thing for quite a while. After watching the videojug video's, those with that Rickard Stronger guy, I figured out what the problem could be. For me the cause was that I set up with my left arm slightly bent. On my downswing my arm would straighten out and that would cause the clubhead to slam into the ground up to four inches behind the ball. Also, it talked about dipping the shoulder in the backswing, which I checked in the mirror and it turned out that I did when I tried to swing hard.

So, last weekend I set up with a straight back and a straight arm and managed to hit 204 balls without hitting fat once. Oddly enough, when I swing what feels like a 3/4 swing, I hit further than when I swing full. I add about 20 yards when I take (what feels like) a short backswing.

i had this same problem. went to a pro and he identified that i was coming out of my spine angle. i practiced it and drilled with it for a while and it works. just keep the spine angle the same through the swing. he told me a good drill for this is to put both your feet directly together and swing, to keep your balance durring this you have to keep your spine angle.

Man 5 replies and already I have more than enough things to try out to diagnose the problem. Thanks guys. I'll have to get a tripod for my videocamera so I can watch my swing for myself.

I think swaying is definitely a problem. I make too much of an effort to move towards the target and my hands are probably way in front of the ball.

Spine angle may also be a problem. I was watching Tee It Up With Tiger and he mentioned spine angle. He said he was always taught to look under the shot, but to make sure that his head lined up with his spine on the followthrough. If it wasn't then his spine angle was off.

Thanks for all the help guys! If anyone else has any ideas please share.
