Did you like your hybrid right from the start or did it take you a while to get used to it?

I purchased my first hybrid, a 24 degree, to replace my 3 and 4 iron. When I first hit the club from the grass in the front yard it was fine and I could hit it about 185- 195 with it.

Today I went to the range and was spraying it all over the place. It might have been the mats but i just don't know?

Yep, I really liked them the first few times I used them(about 4 times a round) and hit some great shots with them. After awhile though, I became so inconsistent with them, it/they were hurting my game. They now reside in a friend's bag that loves them, for now. My 3 iron and 5 wood are back in my bag and I know how to hit them.

Took me a round or two to get completly used to them. But since I have gotten used to them and im not very consistant with my driver, I will tend to hit my 2H or 4H off the tee alot. Accuracy>distance for me.

I had to try a couple different models first. I started playing them about 6 or so years ago, about a year or a little more after I had gotten back into the game. The first couple I bought were fine for a few shots, but just wasn't comfortable. First hybrid I really liked was the Sonartec hybrid I bought a few years ago. It was about the third one I had owned (all bought used fairly cheap), but the first one where I realized just how useful hybrids could be. Now I love them and carry a 2, 4 and 5 hybrid and consider them my favorite clubs.

The first hybrid I bought was the Nike CPR 26* wood when it first came out years ago. I went in a gof store, soled the club and said "oh man-that's me all the way". I got really lucky. That club stayed in my bag for several years. In fact, I just took it out of the bag since I found the first 5 iron I could hit high and straight consistantly. But that CPR had a 38.5" shaft which is about 3/4" inch shorter than most 5 hybrids. That made it REALLY easy to hit.

The next hybrid I bought I was just as lucky with - 2006 Cobra DWS 23*. The only thing I don't like about it is the shaft is sooo long. I choked up a half or whole inch for the first year I played it. Now I can hit it full length on the shaft no problem. The secret for me, with this club, was to keep hitting down a little and not trying to sweep or manipulate the head during the swing. I also bought the 20* in the same model and liked it as well. I just wasn't using it that much. I kinda wish I had it back though. It was in excellent shape when I traded it away.

I was looking to replace my 5 wood , so i bought a Nickent 3DX 2H , 18 deg....And at first i reaaaaally didn't like it. 2 years later...i wouldn't get rid of it.

I actually went the exact opposite direction.

Bought a 23* Nickent 3DX DC to replace my 3-iron when the graphite shaft snapped at the base of the hosel. Loved it. Got a 20*. Loved them both for about a year or so. And then I changed irons and lost all sense of feel for the Nickents (and couldn't hit the irons, either). Didn't regain it in the hybrids when I got another set of irons, so I decided to go the GI-long iron route instead and I could not be happier. Still considering a 17-18* hybrid, but I'd have to drop a wedge and if I'm over 200-210 out I really should just lay up to a distance anyway at this point.

I still a new golfer but I liked the hybrids with my first, cheap starter set, even though the shafts were too stiff for me (steel). I made solid contact with them and felt confident swinging with them, plus I thought they looked cool.

I soon upgraded to some Cobra hybrids with graphite shafts and hit those even further.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)

It took me a little while to get used to them but once I did I use them all the time. I got mine from a friend who stopped using them and eventually ended up giving him about $15 for the two. They're both old and cheap but I like them, plus I've never really hit any other hybrids before so I don't have anything to compare them to. I'll eventually upgrade but they'd be almost last thing on the list.

i love my hybrid its a macgregor mactec nvg2 with 19 degrees loft and i feel comfortable to lay up with it from anywhere around the 200 mark. i agree with Stacey i never feel like im going to chunk it only that i might top it. the head of mine feels really light which i think is the reason the ball really flies off the face. I'm definetly a hybrid believer.

I liked it from the start, felt great hitting them. I've been working on my irons, so they are getting better, but when I'm in a tight lie, rough or something I feel very confident with the hybrid in my hands. Off the mats I find them easier than irons. They are way easier to hit with and bounce better off the mat.

Yep.

Went over to the dark side last year, replacing both my 2 iron and my 4 iron (I still carry a 3 iron as it gives me flighting options not available with the hybrids and is easier to work if necessary)......the damn things ought to be illegal, they're so easy to hit.

It will take a while to get used to hybrids. They look different than irons and are longer than irons (length of shaft). Don't be upset that there is a transition. I still can't figure out my TEE Hybrids. I went from a Callaway hybrid to a TEE hybrid and that is taking me a while to transition. It would probably take longer to go from an iron to hybrid IMO.

Plus, you were at the range. If there were mats, that could be why. Or you were having a bad day. Just wait until you get to a course.

It took me a little while to get used to them. I like the Cleveland Hi-Bore's. For me, they have the LEAST amount of offset. A hybrid is (in my instance) the same length as the iron it replaces (My irons are 1/2 inch long), I also use steel shafts in my hybrids. I want the hybrid to be as close as possible in length, loft, swing weight, and overall weight to the iron it is replacing to maintain a consistency between all my clubs.

The optical problem is, a hybrid looks like a wood, but should be swung like an iron. Your brain adjusts automatically, and it takes a while to learn how to hit a hybrid. Swing it like an iron, and you'll be fine.

I love mine. I figure, if it is good enough for a pro to use, then it is good enough for me. Reality is, most amateurs can't hit a 3iron, 4 iron consistently so for a high handicapper not to be using a hybrid I believe is silly.

I'm with Sherlockian, I bought two differents style of Callaway and sold both of them. I have used my brother's Mizuno and Dad's Cobra, don't like either one of them. I'm sticking with a 3 iron and a 5 wood.

      And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.

      He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.

      At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.

      That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
