Nike vs. Cobra

So I'm finally getting to the point where I've got enough money to buy some new clubs (at least a new driver and iron set) and I've decided that both Nike and Cobra have clubs that are in my price range.

I'm just wondering on what some of you prefer or what you would recommend. I was looking at the Nike Sumo or CCi Irons which I've found for $399 for a set at some places. I've noticed some comparable Cobra's, but can't remember what kind they were. Anyone know of any comparable Cobra irons?

For driver I'm looking at the Nike Sumo Driver and one of the Cobra drivers from a year or two ago I think, again can't remember the name.

Basically, can someone with a little more knowledge just give me the run down of these two brands up against each other.

I wouldn't narrow it down to two brands first of all... and I wouldn't get a Nike Driver simply because I was getting Nike iron or vice versa. Go with what works the BEST. That being said... I would first decide what "type" iron I wanted to play... e.g. super-game-improvement, game-improvement, players or small cavity, or blades... Sounds like you might want something with a fair amount of forgiveness, maybe a game improvement type iron with a wide sole, but not super wide, some offset, and a decent sized cavity. Just go out and try some clubs with these charectoristics, then pick what works best and feels good and have them fitted to you if possible.

As for a driver... I would just hit a bunch on a launch monitor until you find a couple that give you good numbers, then go take them outside and pick what is working best without any regard for what brand club it is.

I would never pick one or two brands of golf equipment to stick with unless I was paid to or could get them free or something...

just curious, but what is your price range... I'll bet I can find a few other brands that would fall in there.

I would look at rock bottom, 3Balls, TGW, Callaway Pre-owned, and a few other places, they all have some great deals and are very reputable. As far as the Nike CCI's go... I have not hit them, but I have heard good things about them from a few people. I certainly wouldn't hesitate to buy them if I liked them and hit them well, same goes for pretty much any Cobras for that matter... both are good companies... again it's back to personal performance and preference.

I used to have Nike CCI iron, they are great. They are my first custom fit clubs by the way. CCI club heads are small, but that's one thing I like about them. If you like them, you can buy it so much cheaper on Ebay.

Try the Cobra FP II iron set (4-GW) it's a good forgiving game improvement iron around the $350 - $399 price point (used). It's very workable and the nippon steel shafts have a good feel to them.

I would also consider the Callaway X20 iron set (4-SW) it's also in the same price range when purchased used. It's a similar club with some very useful game improvement features. It's weighted heavily toward the clubhead and the steel shafts are uniflex (slightly more kick than the Nippon Steel on the Cobras) which provides a nice soft feeling at impact. The Callaway actually is very offset and this fact should be considered if you're the kind of player who wants help straightening out that slice.

The TaylorMade R7 set is also worth considering for your price range. It's a very similar club to the X20 in as far as it's got some serious offset as well.

I just bought a set of clubs in the price range you're talking about and I didn't buy a Cobra or a Nike, food for thought...

By the way, this was my first post, after seeing that you might be considering buying a set of irons from one of two manufacturers because of price I felt that I just had to sign up for the site and say something. Every manufacturer has something in that price range, it's how they remain competitive!

I would ignore the name and research your needs. Once you narrow down the settings (offset, loft, shaft, ect) you need, find the clubs that fit into that catagory. Then watch Ebay to find the deals in your price range. While doing that, hit as many of the clubs you are looking at and find the ones that fit you best.

One thing to do is always hit the longest iron you plan on using from the sets you are considering. If you are planning on using a 3 and 4 hybrid, hit the 5 iron.

In your price range you can find Cobra, Nike, Cleveland, Callaway, Adams....they all have something for you.

I really like the new Nike Dymo square driver and the previous square model. Some of the earliest Nike drivers, though.....may have performed well but the sound would take a lot to get used to.....clank........clank.......clank. Sounds like somebody is hitting an empty beer can with a driver.

Sorry....none of this helps you make any decisions. I'll shut up and let the guys with actual experience answer. For what it's worth, though....I may be ebaying my fairway woods and picking up some Nike sticks really soon.

My current set is a CCI cast irons with the R300 shaft and they're awesome. I thought they were a bit out of my league at first, but the ball comes of the face very lively and since I've had them the last two years, I've taken lessons and since my swing has gotten better,I've gotten more consistent and I need a stiffer shaft. Other than that, the irons are reliable, they always hit the yardages I want and I think they 're quite forgiving.

Having the CCi irons I can tell you they are great irons..... HOWEVER, they are not really a game improving iron, meaning you have to have a clue at how to golf if you want to shoot these.... the heads are a bit smaller than a "game improvement" head, the weighting of them is a bit lighter, etc etc.... but, like I said, I love my irons, but just make sure your ball striking allows you to play that type of club....

and I'm sure you can find a set of NEW CCi's on ebay for less than $330.... probably under $280 or so...... Nike isn't making them anymore so I'm going to assume you can get them pretty cheap.... which is only a bonus for you....

to the Cobra part, I had a Sumo 2 square driver and I liked it, and still do, but since I always love trying and buying different clubs I made the switch to a Cobra driver..... and its one awesome driver....

If you want to save some money, get last years LV4 model from Cobra.... which is a great driver (I've actually read reviews stating that LV4 was the best driver period last year)..... you can get some good prices on those through Ebay as well.... both new and used.....

i have a nike setup and i love them... my brother has a cobra setup and ive tried his clubs out... my other brother plays callaways and pings... if i were to trade for a day... i think id go cobra... those are some really easy to hit clubs

A lot of people forget Cobra is owned by Titleist.

A lot of people also still perceive Cobra as the garbage brand of clubs but I do believe they've come a long way.

I'd really like to try that Cobra L5V driver, I hear it hits balls straight and a country mile. Has anyone hit one yet? I should search the rest of the forum.

I have a Nike Sumo 2 driver and Cobra Irons. I would say that for Drivers..there are a lot in the same price range, go with the one that you hit the best.

Irons, I am very pleased with my Cobra's. Being in the same company that owns Titleist does give me the confidence that the technology is top notch. They have really helped my game and privide great feel and forgiveness. Can't go wrong with Cobra.

Speaking of the L5V, how do you like it? I tried to do a search on it and I couldn't find anything on it. At a recent demo day, a lot of people were trying that driver out and the general consensus is that it's just like you said, long, straight and a sharp looking club. I'm looking at another Nike Dymo Square driver but I'd like to get your thoughts on the L5V, thanks!

- Id go for nike, its not just because it is used by Tiger Woods, they make good clubs! id recommend the new victory red(
