2 things I hope to accomplish this upcomming season:

1) be able to put spin on the ball

2) be able to hit my woods(especially my driver) consistantly

My iron play is pretty good, but I have a hard time with my approach shots. (first of all, my depth perception is atrocious, hopefully getting contacts next week will help)

I was at Mill creek, 170-180 to the pin(on the fairway), I hit my 6-iron, and the ball hit the green, then bounced off into the rough. This is how it usually works for me..(granted, that I make good contct with the ball )

But most of the time I hit my approach, and it will get on the green(for a second) then end up in the rough! I suppose if I hit it short of the hole and hope for some good bounces...
But spin would be "cool" to learn...

**Does anyone have any tips on putting spin on the ball? I can only have the ball stop fairly quickly, only on a "flop" shot. I thought using my lob wedge would help, but even though it seems to land "softer" It doesnt stop or roll back AT ALL. I've noticed on some of the profiles here, they show "spin Milled"? wedges, in their bags. Does this make it easier to put spin/ english on the ball? How about when using the 7-9 irons?

Thanks for the tips!

Does anyone have any tips on putting spin on the ball?

First of all, make sure that you're not playing with a "Top Flight" or any other $12 per dozen or per 24 ball... they will hit the green and bounce off without fail. Just about any ball in the $19 and up range is going to spin enough to keep the ball on the green, especially during this time of year. I play Noodles, Titleist NXT Tours... basically a soft cover on a two piece ball. I rarely have trouble with a ball getting away from me on the green unless I'm hitting the ball low, which I don't generally do on purpose (heh, heh).

Stay away from bargain basement prices. Ask Paco about balls that spin enough... he's the resident ball expert . If you're willing to spend the money Titleist's ProV1 is going to spin like a democrat at a press conference but at a price. I don't spend the extra because the balls I use spin enough. I regularly back balls up this time of year with softer greens and wet conditions. If the ball you're using is adequate, remember that hitting down and through the ball (divot just after the ball) is going to get the ball up in the air and will put a massive amount of spin on a ball (providing its not a cheapo). Remember: "down and through, divot after the ball." There's my 2 cents. Peace.

Thanks buddy, for the advice! I nearly lost my drink with your democrat analogy!

Are you psychic? Top Flite were my "premium" balls! (I usually use Ti-tech, or wilson Ultra!!) I noticed the Pro, whom I took lessons with used titleist, unsure which type though.

Is paco a golfer in this forum?

Thanks AGAIN!

Yeah, Paco (Everardo) is one of the writers/lurkers around here. He's been on a couple of our podcasts too.

While I love Titleist equipment (see the signature) other balls are good for spin. Just stay away from cheapos (Top Rock, er, Flight) and you'll be spinning the ball enough.

Happy Turkey Day.

My goals for 2006 (I changed the title) simply step up my 2005 goals .
  • Play as frequently as possible is going to be another goal. Playing does not necessarily mean a round of golf, but includes practice, etc. It also includes working on my mental game when not at the course by imagining playing, as corny as that may sound.
  • Reduce handicap index to 3.0 or lower. I feel I can do this, though it's a stretch. All good goals should be a stretch - set the bar high enough that you'll struggle to reach it, I say.
  • Mentally commit to every shot prior to hitting it. Shots inside of 1 foot excluded, of course. This will be the toughest goal, bar none, to meet because it's too easy to just step up and hit a shot right after joking around with the guys and not pay much attention. Towards the end of 2005 I re-found my old high-school pre-shot routine and that has helped. Reading the Rotella books has helped as well.
  • Eliminate the "bad shot." Once per round I'll hit just a horrid bad shot - a topped 3W that goes ten feet, whatever. I don't know many single digit handicappers that do this and it just about wastes an entire shot on every hole. So, eliminating this shot - whatever the cause - will save a stroke per round all by itself.
  • Putting the same. My putting was solid this year (though I went through a period where I burned just about every edge imaginable). I made a lot of clutch putts when I had to and when my feel was on I dropped them in or left tap-ins from everywhere. Rotella really helped a lot here, even during my slump - every burned edge just spurred me on with the thought that I was even more due on the next one.
  • Improved driving. My driving went through a bad phase, as did my whole swing this year. Whether it was because of an injury I didn't qutie fully acknowledge or what, I don't know, but around the time I wrote the Science Van article I started coming out of it. I was slapping down on the ball and across it a little bit. That's changed, so my driving should improve next year. Not something I can measure, but I'll know if it's improved or not.
  • Improved short game. The only reason I got up and down as much as I did this year was because I putted well. I know how to play the different shots, but my touch with some of them was off throughout the year. Perhaps it's because I used so many different wedges, but more likely it's because I didn't put in much time on them. My course is supposed to get a short game practice area, but I don't expect to see that until end-of-season next year. I had very, very few chip-ins this year, let alone leaving tap-ins for par.
  • Fitness! December 1 I will commence my workout routine to prepare for next year. I don't know what goals to set here, but I'm looking for some minimal distance gains (though mostly this will be due to technique, not fitness) and better physical fitness. My goal is merely to stick with it, because I think that if I do then I can't help but be more physically fit.
  • Play in local events. I want to play in them. Why I didn't this year is beyond me. I don't care so much about placement - my above goals speak towards how well I place (or don't), particularly the mental one. But I want to play.
  • One round in the 60s. Just one would make my year. On my home course or another par-72er, too, not some par-64 executive course or something.
  • Get through to the kids on my high school golf team.
  • Some stats: Score (avg): 76.5, FWY: 60%, GIR 65%, Total Putts: 30, PPGIR: 1.8, PPMGIR: 1.5.
In all, I want to continue to progress as I did last year. I remain self-taught, but I have a pretty good feel for things and use video sparingly (when feel fails me). I am still young and I tend to manage my game pretty well. I've gotten more aggressive this year off the tee - I used to hit a stock 3W now but I'm looking at shaping my driver more for better distance and, surprisingly, accuracy. I shot a 76 that included a front-nine +1 (and only because I three-putted 9 and just missed something like five straight putts inside of 15 feet) at Tanglewood that, for 10 holes, was about as good a golf as I can play currently - I drove well, putted well (again, burned edges), etc. Had I played the back (which seemed easier) as I played the front and made a putt here and there, I could have shot in the 60s. That's kinda scary and exciting at the same time.

So, as of now, those are my goals. I'll finalize them around January 1 and, per custom, print them and put them here by my computer.

My goals for 2006? Tough to say. Improving on my 3+ hcp is more a dream than a possibility... can't play more (and keep the job I have), too lazy to excercise, too fat to improve the swing... not much left, huh?
Let's keep it simple:
- new irons
- new driver
- new fairway woods
- new wife
All of the above need an upgrade.

I only had one goal for 2005 since it was my first real year playing golf. I want to break 80 and so far all I have is an 81 but I still have five weeks to try. I think I concentrate too much on the number and not how to lower it.

For 2006 I've made the following
Improve Short Game: Currently my GIR % is 27.3% and I want this at or above 35% not only that but I want to improve the poximity to the hole on GIR's. Right now only 14.9% of my GIRs are inside of 15 feet and I want this to be above 20%

This sounds obvious but the closer to the hole I can get my GIR or Up and Down chance the better chances of making fewer putts. Improving my game from 125 yards and in alone will make all my other goals below easily possible.

Putting: As of today my putts per round is 33.6 and my putts per GIR is 2.12. I want those down to <32 and <1.75. By improving my short game and getting the ball closer to the hole then this should be easily possible.

Improve course management: I already think my way around the course but I feel that I can do this better by using the driver a little less, escaping trouble shots better by not trying to play the hero shot, etc.

Reduce handicap to 12 or less - I have it at a 16.1 with a scoring average of 87.9. I have been as low as 14.3 but I'm not consistant enough and my handicap fluctuates a lot especially in tournaments. Lowering my handicap is more about being consistant than anything else but again if I can improve my short game then this should do it.

My goal for 2006 is a small, but very difficult. My goal is to not hit any shot until I'm absolutely 100% committed. In the past whenever doubt has crept in on club selection or the shot that I'm trying to make, bad things have happened.

Indeed - a big thing. You should even go further and try to copy Byron Nelson's approach. Asked how did he put his famous streak of consecutive wins together he said, that he tried (and succedeed

) to make EVERY shot count. Never hit a shot without commitment, plan or target. Never hit a shot when angry, distracted or frustrated. I tried to do that recently, but the worse you play the hardest it is good luck.

This was one of my 2005 plans, but unless you like failure, well, forget it. It's just too easy to get rushed into hitting a shot. It's too easy to just walk up and smack at a meaningless two-footer for par when your opponent birdied (match play). It's too easy to do a lot of those things, so you tend to fail a lot early on.

The easiest way I've found to come close to doing this 100% of the time is simply to incorporate the mental stuff into your physical pre-shot routine. Most people don't change their physical routine at all, even if they are being rushed to hit a little. So, if you put your mental stuff in with your physical pre-shot routine, you can do all of this 100% of the time (or close). Just be prepared to restart your physical routine if your mental one has a setback during the routine. Don't ever "extend" your pre-shot routine, because that's a change.

This may be an old topic. If so I appologize. I started thinking about what I want to do this year and came up with the following:

1. Handicap below 15. That may not look tough for a 16.2 but since I played very little last year and only established a true handicap for the first time last April it will be a little tough. Four of my first six rounds are currently being used for my index. I currently have 18 rounds posted (I play a lot of 9 hole rounds so it takes two weeks to equal one round). When I hit 21, the early ones will drop off and my index could soar.

2. Low average on my league. Last year I missed out by less than half a stroke per round.

3. Practice more. It will be hard to practice less than last year, but so far this year I'm having a hard time getting any in.

4. Play in my first tournament. I am looking at the Michigan Net Amatuer. It is for Indexes of 20 and lower.

5. Have fun. I am going to try and prevent my competetiveness from effecting my mood on the course. So far, so good. I have played one very good round and two that were pretty poor. I could have lost my temper but I kept my cool and was able to right the ship in both.

Well, my personal goals are modest enough:

1. Recapture my former glory as a 12 handicap (currently 15.6, so this should be doable...also, I have some really crummy rounds still on my GHIN card, so I should drop at least another stroke simply through the normal process of play).

2. Play in the Partners' Club Tournament this September (at TPC Southwind) without humiliating myself beyond the point of unbearable shame.

3. Gain more consistency with my driver (yeah, I know...this will involve actual practice and stuff).

4. Learn how to putt.

Come to think of it, if I just accomplished 3 and 4 above, 1 and 2 would be automatic...

5. Exercise more consistently to improve flexibility and strength.

6. Further develop my club building hobby and complete my garage workshop while still preserving my 32-year marriage.

My goals for the year are:

1. Handicap below 15. This seems a little bit lofty but I know that I can shoot in the low-mid 80's consistently. My practice and hard work are starting to pay off and I really think this is possible.

2. I want to chip better. It's something that I hate to practice and it shows! This alone will lower my score by a few strokes per round.

3. Break 80. I broke 90 and 100 last year and have not looked back. I shot a 39 last season on 9 but couldn't hold on to break 80. This year is the year to do it.

So we're halfway through the year...how is everyone doing on their 2006 goals?

I only had one goal for 2005 since it was my first real year playing golf. I want to break 80 and so far all I have is an 81

Tied the 81 a couple times but still haven't broken 80, sad I know

Improve Short Game:

GIR% has dropped to 21% but my GIR's inside of 15 feet has jumped to 25%

Putting:

My putts per round had dropped to 32 and my putts per GIR have also dropped slightly to 2.03

Improve course management:

OB and lost balls have dropped so that's improving.

Reduce handicap to 12 or less -

Down to a 14, halfway to my goal

    • Here's the bet. Assuming the pursuit of a Tour card holds, who wins their first Tour event? Charlie, or this Russell kid? Bet is off if Miles Russell signs with LIV.
    • It seems like too much work for me. I'm actually surprised at myself for spending as much time on this as I already have. Shot Scope tells me my shots to finish with a 7i is 0.1 better than with my 50 or 55 so I'm just going to go with it. Actually, I tend to be the complete opposite. I've never faced a shot I'm convinced I can't hit. It leads to great heroics and complete flops. Conservative for me might just be someone else's normal.
    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
