The other day i went to a golf store to look at some new irons and got on the simulator. They put that tape on the clubface to see where i was hitting it and i hit everything high on the clubface and way on the heal. It gets worse the shorter the irons too. The pro there gave me a free mini lesson and said it was from me comming over the top alittle. I worked on it there and realized how much distance i could gain by hitting the ball in the middle of the clubface. I mean 20-30 yards of extra carry on the few i did hit well.

Now i hit a playable fade and want just one shape so i can take a side of the course out of play.

What should i do? I was thinking about just closing my stance so that over the top now becomes down the line. Is my thinking way off?

What else can i try? I bought some of that tape and am going to use it when i get to the range next week.

Thanks and sorry for the rant.

Are you 'vertically challanged?' The only reason that I say that, is too long of clubs could cause a more over the top swing, and hitting it on the heel. Perhaps shorter clubs. If not try standing further away from the ball. Twice as far from it is you think. It will feel like your streching. If you try that, your body will try to fix the over the top swing to contact the ball, and you will also find it very difficult to hit it on the heel. Let me know if this helps.

It may be hard to visualize, but I like to do some tricks with a club and ball. Take a club and a ball and try to hit the ball up and down into the air, like Tiger did on the Nike ad. You will soon notice where the ball will get a solid bounce and where it hardly moves at all. The difference is huge just by doing this, hitting it at the sweetspot will bounce it up without moving the club, if you hit the toe it may bounce 10% the height. Now imagine hitting the ball off the toe and on the sweetspot, how big the difference will be.

You can swing at 120 mph without gettint long if you don't get good impact, you can swing at 80 and hit it further by finding the sweet spot.

    • I agree with @pganapathy about removing some clubs. I would recommend removing the 2, 3, 4 and 5 irons for now. Play with Driver 3W 5W 3H 5H 6 iron 7 iron 8 iron 9 iron PW ( you don’t have listed) 52 56 Putter Th 60 wedge can be difficult for new players, but you could keep that If your 3H is adjustable, increased the loft to be more like a 4H. Play with these on course and see if you can get a feel of the actual yardages for each club and especially the gaps between them. It may take 10 or more rounds. A par 3 course is helpful for determining the gaps in the irons and some woods too. A device like a Shot Scope H4 can really help give you your actual yardage on course.
