Tee off today at 940AM ....after a frost delay ok....no big deal 45 minutes behind intended time....

Here comes...

we are behind two groups who proceed to play a 6 hour round..

First group, 2 riders 2 walkers have no idea how they play...but the next group is an indication.....they are so horribly bad, but they were waiting on the 1st group until the 14th hole!!! not there yet,,,,1st TEE still for the second group....a guy gets to 1st tee and hits under or over the ball it goes 2 feet....next guy hits 45 feet into a high grass hill. OK but they were playing off the black tees on a monster course. I approached the starter and asked who the ranger is ,,he says" I am."..I asked if this group should be playing from the blacks,,,he yells at me ,,.,"your already starting off with a bad attitude....you see that shiny red thing in the sky,,itll be there all day.... " i had my best front nine ever 46 and the group was moving so-so we waited on 2,3,4,5,6,7,9, but not too ling 5 min each....

then #&^$^ the back nine due to frustration...we got to the 10th tee and they again teed from blacks in front of us and didnt let uour 3some through...only to have 3 of the group hit into the high grass 45 ft from tee....we waited 20 minutes on that hole,

It ruined what was otherwise a great day...for me. We waited over 15 minutes at 6 of next 8 holes.... I found that there was a 4 +hole spread 3 groups ahead and the 2 group ahead... I went to the proshop to voice my frustration with their starter,,,the pro responds ,..that group always comes here and insists on playing blacks,...Scathing letter to the course here we come...I USED TO PLAY THERE 20-25 times a year....Unless I see a 18 hole rain check reply letter,..,.NEVER AGAIN and I will bad mouth that course forever.....spleling errors are ignored... I take clients out often and a course will either live to a higher standard or not...I cant enjoy a 6 hour round since Ill get $#$% when I get home......

RANT done for now..

So what exactly do you think the main problem is? Is it the starter with his head up his rear? Is it people playing from the tips that can't even hit it past the ladies tees? Or is it that no one let's anyone play through anymore? I'm assuming all of the above..... What gets to me (and what seemed familiar to me when reading your post) is when people won't let faster groups play through. It makes NO SENSE AT ALL not to let the group behind through. Hell, when I'm playing and someone is coming up on my tail, I can't settle down and concentrate fully on my game because I'm constantly aware of the person right behind me; I'd play much better if I let them through and didn't have the pressure form them.

I would have jumped the two groups, then gone back and played the 2 or 3 holes I missed.

This is what I do in this kind of situation. i'd rather not play a full 18 than wait for people who have no intention of letting me through. The concept of letting faster groups through seems totally alien to some folks. The whole point is to enjoy yourself, waiting around endlessly can totally spoil the fun. Also playing through isn't always the easiest thing to do, you naturally rush and can mess up your concentration that way as well.

I played a seven hour round yesterday at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Colts Neck, NJ. The starter was a complete moron and kept sending people out when it was backed up to hell like hair in a drain. At the second tee box, my buddy and I laughed it up with two other groups of four (who were all waiting to tee off) about how ridiculous this was.

And you know it's slow when a high handicapper like myself complains about how damn slow the round is going! I would never play on the weekend if I could.

I would have jumped the two groups, then gone back and played the 2 or 3 holes I missed.

I used to do this when I rode a cart. Tried it once walking and it was completely pointless. I, however, didn't do it the few times I was told ahead of time that it's crowded so don't jump around. Gotta respect the course!

So what exactly do you think the main problem is? Is it the starter with his head up his rear? Is it people playing from the tips that can't even hit it past the ladies tees? Or is it that no one let's anyone play through anymore? I'm assuming all of the above.....

I second this post EXACTLY.

But really... what good is a marshall if they don't enforce anything. I was at the course one time with a lone lady playing ahead. She didn't want to play with anyone and she wouldn't let anyone play through. The marshall talked to her several holes after we caught up to her... came to us and simply said "she wants to be alone" -- and that was that. To the OP... that fact that you can score a 46 on the front nine playing with that pace is impressive to me. If I'm stuck in that situation I doubt I'm getting under 50.

Last year I was out with 3 friends for a nice round of golf. The others are much better than I am, but I keep up the pace with them. We tee'ed off and after finishing the 1st hole. We waited about 5 minutes on No. 2 to tee off. About 12 minutes on No. 3 and over 20 minutes on No. 4 The group in front of us was bad. They would all go over to a ball discuss it. Finally it was hit. Then they go to the next ball and do the same thing. By No. 5 we called the pro shop. We started to get the normal no action. By then there was 3 groups waiting. We got the other 2 groups to call also. Finally one of the other waiting players told them either do something or the 12 of us wanted our money back. The head pro was out in 10 minutes and asked the slow group to wait as the now 4 groups waiting played through. I was impressed, but it took a very strong demand by 12 players to get them to do something.

I honestly dont get it. Im torn on whether its worse to be a slow player, a dick, or a whiney bitch who wont just go around the slow players in front of you? 1. Im a slower player than most, but I always keep aware of people coming up behind me and have no problem letting them play through. 2. Rudeness has no place on the golf course IMO. Whether it be in the form of a slow group whos either unaware or doesnt care about those behind them, or of a condescending blow hard (sorry, thats how alot of those too antsy to wait 5 minutes come off to me) who thinks they are so good and above everyone else on the course that people should bend over to cater to their every wish. Granted I think most players fall in the middle ground of all above, but I cant stand either.

In the end, mind your own business, skip ahead if necessary, and for the most part keep your own feelings/opinions to yourself on a golf course, as you know what they say, opinions are like *** holes, everyones got one.

Ok.....as a a complete new guy to golfing, I do have an issue with this. To the point of being frustrating at times...I have been playing only since mid January......and I have been out 3 times....my first time was a 6.5 hour run, albeit no one around...we only let 2 groups by....

Ok so here is the question...how do I signla some one through....and what guarantee's that the folks behind me are not as slow or slower than me? I have palyed with golfers who paly in the 90's yet play slower than me ...but refused to pick up the pace. Some holes are quicker than others in nature. Ok so what I'm trying to say is...when is a little waiting too much? How do you know and how do signal through?

I would alos say that be a little patient with the new guys...I'm sure you were are the same place at some poitn in your game.

It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

I would say just be aware of your surroundings. For the most part, you can tell when people are having to wait, or are coming up on you. As for waiving them through, I dont think theres a special gesture or way to do it. I find a tree, waive them through and wait for them to go on. Usually Ill just finish a hole and wait at the next tee box.

I apologize if I came off as too harsh in my post above, but I do get sick of hearing people complain about waiting for people or getting stuck behind slow players, probly because Im more than aware that Im a slower player myself. I guess I just cant understand why they just dont go around instead of letting it get to them. Why let someone else ruin your day for you? My play usually does that well enough on its own...

I don't remember the last time I played a round and never waited unless I was the first group off. A golf course is in business to stuff that course and have people pay to play, if they inconvenience a few to make the extra buck, they will. As far as the starter being an A**, he sits on the tee all day and hears complaints about why there is a wait, or why they are not next. It is the ranger's job to move groups along and to make sure the course is moving at a steady pace. All I'm saying is you are always going to be playing slower than you want, so if you have the time enjoy it, if you don't, then just play nine and get a rain check.

P.S. If you complain about slow play to the pros or anyone in the pro shop, you will get laughed at when you leave because they can't do anything about it while they are in the pro shop and don't know about it until after your round.

Can they keep pace with the group in front of them? if they can, you shouldn't be mad, and understand this is the weekend. If they can't, that is it !!!

and if they play that bad, I don't understand why would they want to play black tee on the weekend? I would be at the driving range, making my swing better, and choose to play on the weekday where I am not slowing down anybody (but well, maybe they have no choice)

This is why I don't play in the weekend. I hate those people who don't care about others. I hate the Marshall who doesn't do sxxx. and I can't play well when I see people stuck up behind me. I mean if I make them wait at least 15 minutes, I am done, I let them through (this is when I can't keep pace with the group in front of me)!!! I hate to make people wait for me.

If you have a choice, just play in the weekday.

This is out of topic. One time I was in a Safeway. There was a woman, I think about 30-35 year old, we waited on the line for at least 7-8 minutes. When it was her turn, she spent another 2-3 minutes trying to find her card ! I just don't get it. She had 7-8 minutes to get the card ready. I always have stuff ready, so when it's my turn, it would be fast. Not only it would save my time, but also for those people who wait behind me....

    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
