Went in for a fitting session and it was very smooth and seamless. The gentleman who helped me has been fitting folks for many years. I'm confident that he got me dialed in. Went ahead and placed the order.

PING G5
5 deg upright (maroon)
+ 1.5"
AWT shaft - stiff w/ Cushin inserts
orange cord grip
5 iron - PW, UW & SW

Looking forward to playing them. These are the first new irons I've had in 8 years or so. It's always fun to break-in the new sticks....getting a feel for your new distances and trajectories.....lot's to learn about them.

Great selections.

All of my Pings are fitted, also. I do much better with these clubs than any other clubs I've ever owned. You'll be impressed.

Where'd you go to get fit?

A good buddy of mine games G5 irons and woods. He likes them but I've never asked to hit them. I'm kind of funny about hitting other people's clubs; the last thing I want to do is mess them up somehow. My grampa had a set of Ping Eye2's that he gamed back in the 80's. When he died another grandson got those clubs. I didn't mind because grampa and I played every week (he lived in Midland Valley and was a member out there, our usual routine was to play nine and then go for bbq at the Carolina Bar-B-Que in New Ellenton, good times!). Grampa is the one who gave me my Anser, which he bought originally back in the late 60's new. I also got this funky antique putter he had which has a persimmon head and looks like a little driver except for the fact that on the bottom brass plate it has etched on it "putter". That putter actually has a great lie to it, but I keep it hung on the wall in my house with a couple of his old golfing hats.

I would love to get a set of Ping irons one day, and I probably will but for the next few years I plan to stick with what I've got.

BTW I should have delivered to my house today a slightly used Sumo^2 #3 hybrid (20*). After I get that I'm planning on taking my old hybrid and 3W to Dicks in exchange along with a $20 off coupon and pick up a new Dymo^2 3W (15*). I would have been happy with a Sumo^2 3W but Dick's is sold out of them. Bonaventure doesn't have any either. They do have a couple of Sumo^2 4W's with the stiff shaft, but I'm happier with 5 degree gaps between my driver, 3W, and hybrid to give me more consitant yardage coverage in my bag. I'm scared I'd have too big a gap between the 4W (17*) and my driver (9.5*). The Dymo will cost me a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I got a good deal on the used #3 hybrid and with my trade ins and the coupon (and I've got a couple more coupons I can use at Dick's to get some free balls and double "Rewards" points for the purchase) so I'll be coming in just a bit more than what I budgeted.

I hope the hybrid works out well for you....they are very forgiving and handy. Those Dymo 3 woods look sweet, too.

Hey Chief....give take a look at dansdiscountgolf.com and call 'em on any new club purchases. I just found out about the place today and called and checked on a couple of sticks that some buddies were looking for.....unreal pricing. If you know your specs you can have any of the PING or other manf. stuff made especially for you. I could've saved a little but I went to Pete at U.S. Golf. I've worked with him a good bit over the years and trust that he did well for me. There were also some trade-in considerations. I've only been to New Ellenton once...and that was to go specifically to Carolina BBQ. It was well worth the trip over there. There is nothing finer than golfing with your grandfather. We lost my grandfather a few years back. We enjoyed golfing together many, many rounds....in fact if you add up the time we spent together in total...I guess that golfing would take up the majority of it. Glad you had that experience as well. I saw a show on Golf Channel last night with Arnie and his grandson playing Bay Hill together. It was really neat.
just curious as to why you use the wedges that come in the set? Have you ever tried aftermarket wedges?

There is still one spot left in the bag for a reason....a specialty wedge may very well come into play for the vast majority of my greeside work.

The UW and SW are simply extensions of the set and the distance gaps should be fairly uniform. It also came down to budget reasons. The G5s are an almost "discontinued" model having been "almost" replaced by the G10s. They are selling them for about half the price right now and you can get free shaft upgrades to other shaft options. I didn't want to shell out a lot of dinero right now for four specialty wedges and I'm not real sure what grind I want. I'll game these for a few months and see what I really like. PING has numerous specialty grinds they can do through their PingWRX section. Their tour wedges are pretty cool.
You must be very tall. 5 up and plus 1.5! That's alot

right in there with the Barkley mug shot photos....

After we were done...I was surprised with the specs, too. His actual recomendation wasn't a full 1.5"....but then he saw how I like to vary grip position ever so slightly to get different yardage gaps...he added the final quarter inch or so.

Curious why you went with G5 rather than G10. Both are great but more hype for the G10's.

Are the G5 discounted when you order them custom like this? I know if you can find them the G5 are less money off the shelf.

I didn't think there would be too much difference between the G5 and G10. The iron is a different shade....more silverish than the bronze looking new offerings.

The G5s are still available from PING for hudreds less than what the G10s are selling for. Getting them custom made to your specs doesn't add anything to the cost. The I5s are also still available from PING for just slightly more than the G5s were. I've hit my father's G5s and like the set up and result. I was able to get any of the PING or DG shafts if I wanted for the same price.

LOL.

I thought the same thing. He's gotta be like 6'6". I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley with his new wedge in his hand!

Just curious but did he measure your lie angle after giving you a +1.5" longer club to swing? I know a lot of fitters don't do that and the upright lie that's measured only applies to the shorter club used during the fitting session. It would be nice to know some fitters are doing it the right way.

    • Nothing is assured and lots of talented young athletes in many sports fail to achieve greatness. as was said, injuries, growth, lots of things can come into play, And let’s let honest, over the years a few players have been branded “The Next Tiger Woods” and yet there is only 1 Tiger Woods. My initial point was if he can do a great breakout it may capture the attention of a new generation.  Back in the 70s it was Secretariat in horse racing, we also had Jordan in basketball and let’s not forget Tiger for golf.  Stories get people interested and I think golf needs a new story. I will pull for him and hope it works out but there are so many factors that come into play you just do not know, But I can hope.
    • Day 114: 4/19/24 Chipping and putting practice. Tried a little hinge and hold with good results, which has never been the case during a real round. Playing tomorrow and eager to play.
    • I don't think I've found any of the Good Good stuff, or the guys that were once a part of it, very interesting.
    • Day 535, April 19, 2024 30 minutes in the middle of the day while doing errands and a bunch of other things. Behind. Behind.
    • Day 127 (19 Apr 24)  -  Played in the Friday Men's group today.  While I shoot 82, it was a pretty solid round with 10 pars, 5 bogies and 3 doubles.  I really hated the doubles - but each one was followed by a par come back, so "accepting" the number has really begun to pay off and not letting it get to me on the following hole in thinking "I have to get that stroke back".
