probably longer club, especially if its windy. Only way id hit 100% is if the green is brick hard or theres trouble long or I really just want to make sure it gets on the green.

It is a VERY rare occaision that I hit any club anywhere near 100%. My average swing is about 85%, give or take. As a general rule if I'm between clubs, on 6-iron and up I will take an extra club and swing easier, while on hybrids and long irons I will take less club and swing harder.

yeah there's so many variables. with short irons i like to go 100% if i'm looking to spin it back a little, but i feel taking a longer club and swinging easier helps me be a little more precise with distance control. cuz honestly not many people know exactly how much spin they're gonna get from every shot.

I find that for the majority of times when I could hit a full SW, I choose not to and instead hit a 52* GW, or choose among other options. I like the lower flight of the GW. I am able to control the distance with that club better as well. The other club that I also like to use is my 9 iron. I have always respected the use of a punch or knock down when used as an approach shot into the green. It is always good to have choices.

There are far too many variables to factor, but as a rule of thumb (for me at least), I go with laconic. I'll rarely hit a 100% SW. But I love a 3/4 or 7/8 SW.

i would say it really depends on the situation.if there's danger of going over the green and not much in front, I might muscle a sand wedge.
115 yard is about my cut off for my 56 degree sw.
I don't use a 52 so I have a large gap b/t my sw and pw.

but if the green is downhill, I'll pull the sw. if it's uphill I'll probably follow what I said above.

I'm still getting the feel of the clock way to swing the club with my shorter irons...and even longer irons... but like i said..it really depends on the situation...

but when I try to go with a shorter and lofted club hard..I run the risk of a mishit....it's hard for me to control when I really really go after it.

Would you hit a 100% sand wedge or take a longer club (such as the gap or pitching wedge) and hit it softer?

I'd never hit any wedge 100% unless it was downwind in a 2 club wind. Wedges are made for accuracy, not power.

Maybe its me but the harder I swing my wedge the shorter it goes just higher.

With my SW I seldom take a full swing (as is the case when I carry a LW). I would much rather use my 51* wedge and take a 3/4 swing. But, as others have said, it depends on the cirumstances such as wind, green shape/design, pin position, trouble short and long, etc.

Under normal conditions (flat ground, no wind) I would only do this in one situation. That is if the pin is on the front of the green about 85-90 yards from my position, with trouble in front of the green. A 100% sand wedge will have a bunch of spin so I would fly the ball past the pin and hope to spin it back. For me, there is less danger doing this than hitting the longer club the exact right distance and possibly coming up short. Any sort of wind or elevation change would make me rethink this shot.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

As others have said, way too many variables come into play. Wind, lie, green conditions, green contours and pin location, etc.....

As a rule, I tend to avoid hitting any club at absolute max, 100% if there's another option available though.

I think its easier to screw up trying to wring everything out of a club then taking it easier and using a differnt club.

Longer club for 2 reasons. One I can't hit my SW that far, and two, I'm peculiar in that I never use my SW for anything but bunker shots. I have my other 3 wedges gapped to cover the ranges I need for full shots, and from 100 yards, I'd be hitting a hard 52° GW or a weak PW. The choice would depend on other factors... location of trouble, pin position (front, middle, back), wind, etc.

In my opinion and experience it is better to go more club. It is more controllable, spin, accuracy and you can flight it alot better hitting a 3/4 or knockdown. Full wedges might spin TOO much and end up poorly.

my stock 100 yard club is 52' wedge.

to bring it in a stitch lower i would hit a 9 iron at 50%

ive been toying w/ a 100 yard 7 iron punch / chip / pitch type shot as well.

its all situational.

Something missing in the question? For what shot?

Obviously, what I'm trying to say is: IT DEPENDS! Depends on the shot, conditions, lie, pin location, green contour, firmness, hazards, wind, how I'm swinging the club, etc... only a hundred different variables.
