I wasn't to sure about where to put this post but I decide here. Recently I went to Golfsmith to search for some advice for a new driver this year. Currently I'm hitting a R7 Quad TP, 9.5 with a proforce stiff shaft. I hit this driver good but still am looking at getting a new one this year.

So I'm in the store and approached by a young guy and we start talking drivers, I really wanted to get on the launch monitor because I was very curious on what my specs were. Well after warming up for a bit, I start hitting the new Diablo and hit it fairly well, then he gave me the R9 which I also hit well (I really like this one) and finally he gave me a G10 which was ok too. But now here is the issue. I was really looking for some "good" or should I say "professional" information. The guy ended up saying "well you hit the R9 down the middle and long and I think that the one you should buy." and that is almost word for word. Is it me or is that just how it is? I guess I was looking for some better information.

My average numbers were:

Swing speed 103 mph
Launch 12 degree's
Spin 3200 (which is a little high)

Has anyone else experienced this or was I just expecting to much? Thanks.

I think it was just the person you ended up talking to. When I was on the monitor at a Golfsmith the person explained everything to me. The created more questions, which he answered. This was some time ago and I am wanting to get back on to see what I am hitting now. I would suggest finding the person at the store who makes a point of understanding the numbers and can explain them.

I am currently in the GolfTec program that is located in several Golfsmith stores. My general belief is that both GolfTec and Golfsmith's club fitting is inadequate. I think it is a lot more art than science. Good luck

I've done the lessons with Golftec and I liked them but this last experience with the golfsmith sales person was mediocur at best.

Now has anyone been to a different place to do the same thing? I've heard of a place in Ypsilanti Michigan called McGuires??? Thoughts?

It was probably just the person. I have gotten good explanations from a guy at Golfsmith a couple of weeks ago and he openly admitted that he wasn't even certified yet, but others in the store were. Just ask for someone who is certified on the launch monitor or even PGA certified.

well maybe I should try the other golfsmith in town? and cross my fingers I get a little more information out of the guy? Instead of a used car guy.

Well, I went to the other golfsmith in town and my experience was much better. The sales guy was way more informative than the last. Really talked about what different shafts would do and he had me comparing a good amount of drivers.

Looks like I'm going to end up with the Adams Speedline. Its amazing on how the club speed increases with this club. Consistently 5-6 mph faster and obviously consistently longer. Amazing if you ask me.

It was the golfsmith lauch monitor guy that told me my grip was wrong. Once I corrected that, i began to to a lot better. I would not base a compnay on one experience with one guy, but 1st impressions mean a lot. Mine was good.

I agree that it was probably just he person. I went to a Golfsmith last month and the guy explained everything to me, checked all of my clubs, talked about different setups, etc...we talked about it for over an hour probably. He seemed to really know his stuff.

yea i was just on the golfsmith launch monitor today and the guy watching me helped me fix my grip and that nearly eliminated the spin i was putting on the ball. went through 4 drivers and lots of teaching before we came to a decision. definitely happy i went there to buy my new driver (check sig)!!

No your not expecting to much, someone there should have been able to help you more. But your swing speed and launch angel are correct, and as you say ball spin is alittle high (could have tried different balls.) At least you got to try different clubs to find which one works best for you. And of course you always want to buy the one you hit long and down the middle. Before you buy you need to go back in a few days and hit the launch monitor to see if you get the same results.

I personally don't like getting "fitted" for a club based on what a launch monitor tells me is ideal for me. I have been told by many fitters that my numbers are not ideal and I could bet more distance if I had a driver with more loft and a little softer shaft. I had one made up for me to test and I did hit it higher and it did carry farther (5 yards), but the overall distance was shorter than my driver and I lost control because I was hitting it too high. The thought today is to hit it as high as you can with as little spin as possible to maximize carry distance. In theory, that sounds like a good idea, but in reality I think you give up too much control of the golf ball when you reduce the spin that much. The tour guys don't mind giving up that control because they believe they make more birdies from the rough at 130 out than they do from the fairway at 150 out. This is flawed thinking. Look at how much better Tiger plays when he is in the fairway. Control is the name of the game. You gain control when you gain feel. Taking away too much spin from a driver might do more harm than good, especially if you push or pull the ball. The ball will start off left or right and stay there... it can't work back to the fairway because of lack of spin.

So, in the end get something you like, not something someone else tells you you need because of numbers. Go by feel.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee
