As many of you know, Scorecard (or here ) has a 2.0 release coming out shortly with nine-hole support and graphs of stats.

I'm looking for some private beta testers for both Mac OS X and Windows to begin beta testing as early as this Wednesday or Thursday.

We're limiting our selection to about 5-10 Mac OS X users and 5-10 Windows users, all of whom should have a copy of Scorecard 1.0 already installed and, ideally, licensed. In the past, we've had some beta testers who use this just to get a sneak peek at software. If that's your intent, please don't apply.

Beta testers who are accepted and provide an acceptable amount of feedback (to show that they've done some testing) will receive a free license to 2.0. Beta testers who go above and beyond will get an extra license to give to a friend.

We're feature locked (for the most part), so it's too late to get feature requests in (though we'll consider them for 2.1, 2.2, etc.) - this is primarily about finding bugs so that we can fix them.

To apply, please copy this form and fill it out. Please don't quote this post - it's unnecessary.

1-3 Sentences about why you'd be a good choice: I use my stats as a barometer of things to work on in my game. I would use the software fully and would be very likely to find any problems with it (plus, I beta tested version one and found and reported bugs).

1-3 Sentences about why you'd be a good choice: I'm a bit of a computer geek wannabe and I've built my own PC and dabbled in software stuff, so I would think I could give some decent feedback. As far as golf goes, I usually play 2-3 full 18 hole rounds per month and another 2-3 rounds of 9, so I would be inputting a decent amount of information. You and I had a running dialog a while back (Feb. `08 I believe) where we worked through some bugs and it seemed to go well.

1-3 Sentences about why you'd be a good choice: Most of my rounds are 9-hole rounds, so I have been an advocate for 9-hole support since I purchased Scorecard (last spring). I think that I would be a good person to test Scorecard 2.0 because I would use this particular feature heavily during the beta period. Also, I have used the statistics Scorecard provides to help improve my game dramatically (dropped 8 strokes last summer).

1-3 Sentences about why you'd be a good choice: Tough one. I think the current version is an excellent adjunct for the analysis of my game and would really enjoy the opportunity to beta test the upcoming version whether or not it allows me a gratis copy. I like to think I keep an eye out for bugs - I recently reported an error regarding the exporting the notes field from the app to html.

1-3 Sentences about why you'd be a good choice: I'm an analyst for Hilton Hotels Corp in IT systems development; I design and test software for a living (detailed steps to recreate bugs, testing valid conditions to regression test functionality, testing invalid conditions to determine exception handling, etc). Good eye for details in regards to numbers, I work on the revenue reporting/accounting system and validating totals/spotting strange numbers where others miss them is part of the job. Also play nine holes almost every evening after work (the reason I'm not licensed is because I'm waiting for 2.0 just for this) so this gives me a good opportunity to see how these numbers impact the roll-ups and averages in the application, I believe 9 hole rounds is one of the biggest features of the update.

Note I can also test the Windows version on XP, Vista, or Server 2008 (albeit in a virtual machine environment) if the OSX beta is full but you still need folks on the Windoze side...

1-3 Sentences about why you'd be a good choice: Love the product, use it for every legal round (about 40-50 per season), and I'm a stats nut. I print and study my stats after every round to help focus my practice time, and I've made a few suggestions on the forum, too. I routinely submit bug info for other software products I use, both as a beta tester and as a user.

    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
