Could it be in my head? I hit the driver and woods as straight as I want to. Now with my irons I just cant get them going. From time to time I get them going great but not consistently outside of 120 is becoming my worst position. I chip and pitch great. Any ideas or drills?

Oh yeah typical ball flight is becoming a lot shorter than it should be. On the range the distances are a lot further than on the course. But this is only with my irons.

Have you considered getting more woods or hybrids? I see you already have a 7W.

If irons are OK and longer on the range are you hitting from the mats?

If possible, practice your irons on a grass tee.

At least you will have a level playing field and work from there.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

I seriously doubt its in your head. Your swing with your woods is going to be more of a sweeping motion and your swing with your irons is going to be a more vertical and direct swing. I would guess its either a problem with your swing path or how you setup to the ball or both (without seeing you swing i can't really give a great opinion). I would probably go take a lesson focusing on this problem and fix your swing.

Just out of curiosity though, how's your ball flight and yardage with each iron? Are long irons and hybrids easier than short irons? hope that helps

Well I practice on grass ranges due to when I picked up the game two years ago I felt that I was injurying my wrist hitting on mats.

Alcorn: My yardages are as follows on the range.
Driver:275
7W:215
3i:185
4i:175
5i:165
6i:155
7i:145
8i:130
9i:120
PW:110
SW:85
With my irons I know that I'm taking divots after the ball and that they are deep divots I don't know how much that helps.
I'm currently shopping for a camera to record my swing for help can you guys recommend something.

Sounds like you're just hitting your irons fat. If you're taking a big, huge divot with anything but wedge, 9 and maybe 8, I'd figure fat shots. Hit the range and maybe see if you're needing to move ball fwd in your stance. I know if I really want to hit a low spinning shot, I'll move it back and I take a huge divot then.

I think Alcorn is spot-on. The deep divots are most likely from a too-steep swing path - they probably also point left of the target. Lesson time.

bingo the divots are deep and to the left most of the time. Also ball flight is usually high doesn't seem to be very penetrating either.

I am also looking for a camera. My favorite at the moment is Casio EX-FC100.

Can take high speed videos.

I am also looking for a camera. My favorite at the moment is Casio EX-FC100.

It doesn't really do high speed videos at any good resolution.

According to Casio : HD (1280x720 30fps) HS 1000 (224x64 1000fps) HS 420 (224x168 420fps) HS 210 (480x360 210fps) HS 30-210 (480x360 30fps 210fps) STD (640x480 30fps) 480 x 360 is not the greatest resolution and that's the slowest of their "high speed" modes. I recommend you pick up a Kodak Zi6 - $159 versus $349 for the camera you've listed, and it does great 60 FPS video at full 720p.

Without seeing your swing and you say your divots are deep and left my guess would be your short iron are to long and lie angle's are off on your irons. I am guessing to upright causing your heel to hit the grass first making the toe turn over going left. I see when you go to a range your hitting off matts, place some masking tape on the bottom of your irons hit some shots and look to see where you are making marks on the tape, if the marks are toward the heel the lies are to up right, if in the center of the club the lie is ok, if toward the toe the lie is to flat. I think you will find the mark toward the heel. If so two things could be wrong, clubs to long or lies to upright, or both. Lies are very important and i will give you and example. If you hit a pitching from 100 yards to a pin and you hit the hole every time, and then you change the lie angle 1 degree up right and then hit the same shot the ball will miss 22 feet left of the hole. So lie angle is very important. All that being said you need to have the club lengths checked first then the lie angle. You will need to find a clubfitter in your area he can help you.

I hope this helps

To me, this sounds like a basic, steep, over-the-top move. Swiping across the ball can make the ball go high and short if the clubface is open. Been there, done that :). You may be doing this more with the irons than woods, which is not uncommon as longer clubs make your swing flatter to begin with. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a simple fix to this, since so many things can set you on a steep downswing path (head dipping, poor weight shift, etc.). Good luck!

Thanks glduffey its funny because I was thinking the same thing that the lie or the lengths were off so I went to a club fitting before work and the guy told me that the lies and lengths were good on my club so it looks like it's a swing issue so I'm going to purchase a camera and get my swing on tape.

I really agree with this. Too vertical a swing path promotes counter rotation of the arms, a slightly open face, and cutting or slicing with loss of distance.

It also sounds like you are not contacting the ball with a forward leaning (or hockey stick or hands ahead of the clubface) iron position. Virtually all pros and good golfers hit irons with the club in this position at contact.
