I'm not too worried about distance as much as control. I'd like something soft that won't get away from me with my scoring clubs.

Also, will a lower spin ball help with control off of the tee?

I quite like the DT Carry. It helps my driver distance quite a bit, but it doesnt spin that much around the green. I tend to take a bump and run approach so this doesn't change that much just a tid bit of adjustment.

If i could afford it I'd use the tour-ix. Best ball I've ever used hands down. It was the first ball of mine to make it a full 18 holes. I got extra distance off the tee and ridiculous spin around the greens. Once i get to a point where I only lose a ball or two a round this will be my new ball.

What does your drive look like? I put some slice spin on my ball sometimes with the driver and long irons. I want to make sure that I don't try to use something that will compound my problem.

I have found that the Callaway Hot Bite is very good off the tee and has a great deal of spin on the greens. Of course...your swing and equipment helps create that spin...but I have sold the pro v's..(swing speed 95-98), and tried a lot of different Titlelists, Bridgestones and about anything that wasn't a water ball and settled on the Hot Bites. They are relatively inexpensive at $30 a dozen and the driver spin is not bad..but around the greens, you can generate back-up spin is not too excessive.

I was slicing for a while, but now I'm down to a baby fade and the occasional draw. The tour-ix made slices non-existant, and i know that a ball shouldn't fix something like that, but the round before and after i used the tour-ix, i sliced. While using the ix...not a damn slice.

With my irons i have a nice draw due to some offset, but driver, 3w, and hybrids all have a fade. The DT Carry actually seemed to reduce this, but i was playing random trash before that.

I've found some of the higher spin balls do accentuate the slice. But I have not tried the Tour ix. Too pricey for my game. I've had best luck with mid-spin balls like Bridgestone e-6+, Srixon AD333, Titleist DT Carry.

I'd look towards very low spin balls.

When you say "get away from you on the green", to me that means that the ball did something that you weren't expecting. For a higher hcp, that usually means they inadvertantly imparted some spin......side or back and the ball did exactly what it was supposed to do, but what the golfer didn't necessarily intend. Lower spin balls will tend to be more consistent in how they react to less consistent strikes and as such, you're less likely to be surprised at how the ball reacts when it hits the green. Higher spin balls allow better players a wider variety of shots around the green, but that's not your issue at this point.

As an added bonus, you'll likely be straighter off the tee and gain some distance as well......neither of which are a bad thing, no matter what the handicap!

I like the Top Flite D2 Feel. Been playing them since the beginning of the 2008 season. I have a small slice off the tee with my driver and this ball reduces it nicely. The feel off the irons is great, better than I expected for being $15 for 15 balls. Spin around the greens is decent and consistant. Alignment mark for putting works great too.

Again, I will highly recommend the D2 Feels. The are a mid-spin ball that feels nice, not too hard. Great price at $15 for 15 balls.

I like the NEW D2 feels even better. They come 15 balls in a smaller box and supposedly are longer than the originals. Near me, the only store that has them so far is Target.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

you should be playing a ball that reduces the spin then if you tend to slice or balloon the ball. i'd really just go get fit for the ball

and USUALLY while you're getting fitted for your stuff, they'll notice something with your swing that could get that slice out.... off the top for you without seeing your ball flight, and missed shots, i'd say DT, Nike Karma, or TM Burner but i'd personally go and get fitted for a ball...you spend countless dollars on the game and clubs... why not make sure you're playing the right ball

I've been using the Titleist DT series pretty consistently for quite some time now. Definitely doesn't feel like a rock but isn't super spinny like some of the aforementioned balls in this thread - I prefer a hop and stop anyway. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between these and the Titleist NXT series balls (infact I thought the NXTs felt a little harder).

I prefer the discontinued So/Lo, but if you're lucky your local golf shop might still have some in stock. I still got about 50 of em :)

IOWA, I was on the same quest recently. To my amazement the Titleist ProV1 (andx), Bridgestone B330 S, and Z-Stars all made great choices. I never tried the Callaway, but I am going to soon. These balls are all designed to minimize driver spin and "maximize" spin from scoring iron/wedges. The x versions are lower on the iron/wedge spin.

I did not think a premium ball was "within my game"....I was wrong. Now I feel like my handicap has no where to go but down!

I recently went through some of the same experiments and found the calloway diablo to be a nice match for my game. Low-spin and low compression works well for me in the chill of early golf in my area. Generally a pro-v1x user.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
