I'm looking for a new set of clubs for a buddy of mine looking to get back into golf. He played some in high school, but the games been on/off since. He's looking to spend about $400.00 max. I told him I'd help him out, so give me some ideas ;).

I told him that if he wanted a full set/bag than Target or some other non-specialty store would be the best. But I've been looking at TGW and others online and Adams and Wilson seem to have some good deals.
If anyone has a good idea for a new set that's not terribly expensive, we as a group will have turned another person into a golfaholic. Thanks!

(Help, I need some buddy's to go on a golf trip with.)

Make sure you take a good look at ebay from well respected sellers. If you don't mind preowned clubs you can find some amazing complete starter sets.

I saw a Nike set of slingshots with the sumo driver and woods go for just over 400 and you can find a lot of older model big bertha sets on their for cheap as well.

some of the best advice I have heard is to start with a "Cheap" set of golf clubs, check craigslist, ebay, and other sites for something that is in good shape and new. Have him spend the rest on getting lessons. $400 isn't alot when you consider the cost of lessons. But if you can get him a set for $200, and $200 worth of lessons, he will enjoy the game alot more. Also, after a year of playing, he will know what he wants in his next set of golf clubs.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

also, if you have an old set of irons laying around, maybe you can let him borrow them for a season. This will let him put the entire $400 towards a newer driver / fairway wood, some lessons and lots of golf balls.
