Just wanted to know how most of you play par 5's. On my local course they front 9 par 5's are 516 and 511 yards. I am junior player so if i really bomb one out (270) i can have about 250 left into the green. Even if i got this far i still lay up. Although it may only be 10 to 60 yards depending on the drive i always lay up and try to hit it in close with a wedge to have a birdie attempt. Putting at this moment isn't a strength although i am practicing hard on it.

I have so much confidence in my wedges I usually go for the green. If I hit it great I may reach the green, if not, I have a short wedge to get it close.

200 or closer to the green and I'm going for it. 200-225 depends on the conditions. Above 225 and I'm laying up.

Edit: I should also say it depends on the round I have going. If this is the 17th fairway and I have the round of my life going I'm probably laying up so as to take a large number off the table. Bad round and I'm gripping and ripping.

The only correct answer is: "it depends", but for now I have chosen 'lay up'. The reason being is that I want to try and break 90 this year and the most efficient way of doing that is to not take any unnecessary risk.

But, If I am playing a very casual round or I already blew any chance of getting a good score, I'll pull out the big guns and go for it. My local course has a 468/494 par 5 with a dogleg right that you can cut off quite sharply. A good drive will leave me with a 5W into the green, so can definitely feel the temptation. So far I have managed to contain myself, especially since laying up has lead to great birdie opportunities in the past.

I guess i should also mention that this post is spurred by my recent hybrid purchase. I purchsed a 17 degree hybrid to replace both my 3 and 5 woods. Since the 3 woods was never used of the fairway and the 5 wood was only used about 2 times around the hybrid does the job of both. I can only get about 220-230 out of this club so do you really think my scoring will be improved by adding another hybrid 14 degree?

Yea, it definitely depends in a vacuum, but I always go for it...usually with poor results.

You may find this a bit weird, but I don't own a 3-wood and have never really used one. This is mostly due to my newness to the game as I only carry 12 clubs in my bag at the moment. I decided to fill out my bag with a 3-wood and a gap or lobber maybe in a few months or next season.

And my drives don't have enough legnth on them 90% of the time to allow me to get there with my 5-wood. However, if I am in 5-wood range, which with a little help from a down-wind can be as long as 225 for me, I will for sure go for it, since a worm burned 5-wood is better than a topped or chunked 6-iron, IMO.

I lay-up a lot of the time, just because the hole is too long for me, but if I'm in any sort of range with a metal wood, I go for it. Just my personality, unfortunately. That's probably one of the reasons my handicap is getting worse.

Once again i think i should say that the question i am going for here is do you think if i have say a 3 wood or hybrid equal too it i should pull it out and go for the green or should i take the 17 degree hybrid i own and just get to about that 50 yards out and chip on. So i guess i am saying do you think i need the extra expense of a 3 woodish club that would probably only be used 1 or 2 times a round?

I used to always go for it, but these days I am probably more comfortable with a 3/4 to full wedge from 75-120 yards or so that I'll layup to that area. I still occasionally go for it if there is not trouble, but most of the time if the yardage is more than I can reach with a smooth 4H then I'm laying up to that 100 yard vicinity.

On my home course i normally just go for par 5's since i know where i can miss short and be fine. Any other place I'd probably lay up.

Depends how I'm hitting my 3wood or hybrid, or whateve club I'd need to reach in 2. Usually I'll lay up to about 110-135 so I can hit my PW or SW

depends what kind of trouble is around the green... last week I knocked a 3-wood 250+ uphill and had a 50 footer for eagle from the back of the green... another hole I hit 5-iron into for an eagle putt. If there is a ton of water, a narrow landing, or it's a tough up and down, then I'll lay up to 95...

On my home course, I generally lay up to the 100 yard stake. 4 of 6 of our par 5s aren't kind to low/driving/short wood approaches.

I'm also currenlty playing with a large gap in the bag between driver and 3hybrid. How I fill this gap may bring in other options on these par 5's, however I don't feel underpowered on the 5's. There is a lot of confidence standing at 100 yards with wedge in hand and knowing you've got three strokes to make par.

If I get a 3 wood that I can consitently carry 230+ then I'll have other options.

This couldn't be more of an "it depends" kind of question. In a very vague nutshell, if the lie/conditions are good enough for a 3-wood off the deck and you can realistically get it on or close to the green in two, and being off the green does not put you in trouble, I don't see too many reasons not to go for it. But, if you are a better full swing player than you would be with a pitch or chip from off the green, then you should lay up. But how come you would only use your 3-wood once or twice per round? I think of my 3-wood as more of a driving club than an approach club, for those tee shots that put a premium on accuracy. I hit more 3-woods or 2-irons off the tee than drivers actually, which admittedly is because all the affordable public courses around me are short and boring and I don't need driver, but still.

That's it for me exactly. I am good up to 180 in, after that it depends on how cleanly I am hitting the hybrids.

I too would have to agree with the "IT DEPENDS" answer ... distancewise - D, 5W, Chip and birdie putt and I am there in four anyway ... but there are just too many x-factors on this one to answer concretely ...

    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
