So I had my first lesson of the year. The guy said my grip was way too weak. Since I swing inside out, the weak grip produces push-fades. So we strengthened my grip to neutral (right v points to right shoulder and left v points to a little inside that). Now, I'm hitting some nice draws with my shorter irons/wedges, but am drawing the ball like 30 yards with mid to long irons. (It's not a hook, just a really hard draw).

Questions: Obviously, to have an inside-out swingpath and a weak grip and to try to hit straight, I had to release the club pretty hard. Now with the stronger (more neutral) grip, if I release the same, I'd be getting some strong draws. I'd like playing a 5 or 10 yard draw with my mid-irons, but 20 yards is way too much IMO. I should just practice releasing less to get more subtle, smaller draws right? Should I just weaken my grip a bit, or is there an advantage to a "textbook" neutral grip? Basically, I need some reassurances that the super hard draw will stop once I practice some more (only played one round and had 1 practice session since grip change).

(I'm going back next week maybe friday, so I'm going to do exactly what he said to do. I'd just like some input and more knowledge on the subject.) Thanks

Trust your pro.

With all the bits and peices of the swing he has picked the grip first, I suspect there are other things that as your lessons progress he will point out and get you going in the right direction.

Try to hold your lag more, hold off the release a little longer. Because of this you may see an increase in distance also. Good luck man, I wish I could draw the ball at will.
