I replaced my 5-wood with a hybrid... It is the 18* down in my sig. Generally a 5-wood will go about the same distance as a 17-19* hybrid, and a 3-wood could only be replaced by a 14-16* hybrid and you still might loose some distance.
Yes, hybrids are meant as long iron replacements, but we NEED to stop thinking of our bags as having a set number of woods, hybrids, irons, or wedges... it is ALL about DISTANCE gaps. You can replace most woods with hybrids that will go similar distances... just as you can replace irons with high lofted woods, etc. The lofts I listed above are guesses, and different clubs will perform differently... just make sure you are happy with the distance gap from one club to the next. Going driver, 15* hybrid, 18* hybrid, 21* hybrid, iron or some such thing, might very well give you good gaps to work with, and if you hit hybrids better than FW woods, there is no reason not to swap them out.
