My sister recently moved to the Washington DC area and I was wondering if there are any nice courses to play down there. Has to be affordable nothing that will kill my wallet. Something close to Annandale, Va area.

Pinecrest GC is located in Annandale. 9 holes municipal course. There are not much of 18 holes golf course within 495 beltway. If you can go 20-30 miles away from DC, check out MD's Montgomery county's courses (Little Bennett, Worthington Manor, Whiskey Creek).

When I lived in Reston, VA back in the 90s, we used to play Brambleton which is not too far from you. It was a nice course, not terribly crowded at the time, and reasonably priced for that area.

Brambleton is nice, Herndon and Reston would be good choices as well. Meadows Farms is very gimmicky... Baseball hole will remind you of a putt-putt hole... Plenty of high quality courses around Annandale. If you do make the pilgrimage down south to Meadows give me a shout, I live in the area and can recommend many other courses...

Smile, it makes people wonder what you're up to...

I play Reston National quite a bit. It's a nice course, especially for as much as it's played. It can get slow when it's busy (for all those long-hitters that think they'll hit the par 5 #2 in one for a chance at double eagle...).

Hidden Creek is a private course in Reston that is very well-kept, but you need to have your pro call them to get on. If you can, it's a good one to play.

Oak Marr is a 9-hole executive course that's fun but the greens are very slow. Not bad for a quick round.

Fairfax National is a nice layout with 27 holes. I enjoy that course a lot. Reston National is more convenient for me, however. If you go here, you get to choose two of the three 9-holes to play.

Those are all the courses I've played in the area. I'm sure there are some that are closer. Check GolfLink.com for others, that's how I always find them when I'm traveling.

Bumping this thread for some more opinions. I'm going to be in DC for 6 weeks starting mid-April. I'm planning on bringing my clubs, and I should have no problem finding time to play on the weekends. I'm looking for ideas on courses to play in the area. I won't want to go out too far from the beltway because I would have to rent a car or take a cab. Of course, if the course is good enough, that's not a problem. But I won't want to spend $50 on a cab to play a mediocre muni is what I'm saying.

Also, I could maybe swing a weekend trip in the vicinity to play, if anyone has any suggestions for that. Anything would be appreciated.

Where are you staying? Or which side of the Potomac will you be on?

If you're in DC, cab ride will probably be expensive wherever you go.

On the Maryland side, these are my favorites:

Northeast of DC - Hampshire Greens - Silver Spring, MD (Montgomery Country Course)

Northwest of DC in Gaithersburg - PB Dye

Northwest of DC - Rockville/Gaithersburg area - Little Bennett (might be my favorite Montgomery County golf course)

Northwest of DC - Whiskey Creek (This is a great course, but long cab ride)

Northwest of DC - Worthington Manor (See above)

Northeast of DC - Lake Presidential - Love the layout, last time I was there, the course was not in good shape.

Most of the other Montgomery County Courses are OK, when i played on the weekend it was a minimum of 4.5-5 hours.  I'm not a fan of Redgate or Cross Creek.

On VA Side - Nothing good is very close to DC

Laurel Hill - Lorton  is probably my favorite public course in the area

Westfields (good layout, a haul from DC) - Clinton

All of the other decent public courses are a little bit of a drive.

Raspberry Falls in Leesburg

Bull Run in Haymarket

Old Hickory - Woodbridge

Stonewall Golf Club - Gainesville

Landsdowne - RTJ Course - Leesburg

Twin Lakes - Clinton The Oaks Course is nice, the Lakes course is OK.  I typically stay away as it is usually a long round at this place.

Never been a fan of Reston National, although it could have been that it was a 5.5 hour round and I swore I would never play there again.

I'm not a fan of 1757, they have too many hokey holes.  Stay away from Penderbrook Golf Course.

if you want a destination to go play golf, I would look at Williamsburg, VA or Ocean City, MD.  There are plenty of great courses in both of those areas.

I'm staying in DC proper, near McPherson Square. I'm thinking if I go golfing very far away, I would probably look at renting a car for the day. It looks like I can get a car for around $30-$40 a day, which would be worth it if I get two rounds in. Also, enterprise car sharing looks like it's $5/hour for up to 200 miles, so that's an option too.

Thanks for the list of courses! I think I can probably find a few in there I would play.

And the newest course in the area, which I haven't played yet is Potomac Shores, Jack Nicklaus signature course near Woodbridge.

are you a vet?

We played Ft. Belvoir and Andrews AFB

both were fun and inexpensive of course

There is some really beautiful areas outside the area, I'm sure one doesn't have to go far at all in any direction to find dozens of really great courses.

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
