Today, while traveling from school to work, my wife called me to ask "Honey, are those Titleist golf balls in your black mesh bag expensive?" I paused for a second and asked her which bag was she talking about. Reason being that this bag was inside one of my golf bags and my son would have had to go into my closet, into the golf bag and pull the bag from one of the compartments. This is something he had never done. Sure enough, he did. Not only that but he also grabbed a bag of tees so he could tee up and smack away with his driver and hybrid. By the way, he's six.

I told her to please grab the balls from him. Not that I cared about the price of the balls as I get them dirt cheap. It's that I don't want him: A) Breaking a window B) Nailing his little brother or mother and C) Hitting out into the street and hitting a passerby. I also asked her to put him on the phone. The conversation went like this:

Me: J, did you go into daddy's closet and pull out the balls and tees?
J: Yes, daddy.
Me: Why J?
J: Because I wanted to hit golf balls.
Me: J, do you know that you can break a window or hurt someone?
J: Yes, daddy. But I was hitting the golf balls into the woods. No one is in the woods.
Me: Well, that's true. However, if you want to hit golf balls ask mommy to put up the net or take you to the driving range.
J: Okay, daddy.

All of a sudden he screams "Mom, daddy said to put up the net so I can hit golf balls."

For you dads and moms, has anything like this ever happened? Have you laughed so hard that you did not get upset? Instead, just a little worried about their safety?

I'm glad no one got hurt but was really surprised to see him want to hit golf balls without prodding. I can't wait till I'm able to play a round of golf with him.

J: Yes, daddy. But I was hitting the golf balls into the woods. No one is in the woods.

I don't have kids to allow me to answer your other questions, but I'm trying to decide if this is the beginning of good course management (avoiding hitting to places where it's bad to hit) or bad course management (deliberately hitting into the woods). Regardless, I think it's awesome he wants to play.

Shindig, you are too nice. I firmly believe that the 6 year-old here, in question, was only mirroring what he sees his daddy doing ... tough daddy is probably hitting the ball into the woods unintentionally on the golf course!

In all seriousness, it's awesome that he wants to hit balls and wants to play ... Sounds like you have a great kid who just wants to play golf, I mean, really, what more could you want?

Yeah, it was pretty awesome to hear that. He has his own set and I'm thrilled he wants to play. It's just one more thing we can share.

He sees me chipping in the backyard. I think his thought process might be "I bet I can hit it further than dad."

So, he goes wacking them into the woods.

I can tell you that it is really something special to play a round of golf with your son! I feel right now that I am in the beginning of the most special time of my life. My son is 11 and has been playing since he was 4 and it has been a very cool ride so far! Each year as he gets older and bigger he gets closer and closer to catching me. I look forward to the day we go head to head in a few years.

Good luck with your son and let him hit all the Pro-V1's he wants,,,,LOL!!!!!!!!!

My 3 1/2 year old gets annoyed with me when I am practicing pitching in the backyard because I won't hit them over the fence (which has a sidewalk and street on the other side).

that's my daughter in my profile pic on the left .. she's 7 now .. i've been taking her to the course since she was 5.. She can hit a 3 wood about 50 yards.. I let her tee up irons in the fairway and stuff still and just let her have fun but now that it's finally getting warm in michigan again, she's been out in the back yard with her set hitting whiffle balls.

She's excited about playing, it's fun :)

Neither one of my children took to the game, I guess it was just to slow for them. But my son could spot a new club in my bag from 3 rooms away. He couldn't have been more then 8 when I had bought a new wedge, went to the range to hit it, and brought my bag back in the house. With in minutes, "Daddy, did you get a new club?", busted.

This is a great story. I personally don't have kids right now, but I can only hope that they share the same passion for this game as I have. I am really looking forward to the afternoons playing golf with my child...hopefully they don't beat me too early in life.

My son is 18 month old now and i know how you feel when you cant be angry at them because the outcome was just so funny.

Unrelated to golf in anyway but my son was playing on the couch the other day and bouncing off the pillows, he knows that when he is on the couch he needs to sit nicely and not play around. Well one to many bounces on the pillow and he flies up turns on his back mid air and falls right off the couch. I get up immediately to make sure he is ok, and he is on the ground tickling himself, not a scratch on him.

I hope my son picks up golfing one day, how great would it to watch my son with a driver one day, hitting it farther then me.

My son is 2 years old now and has been digging balls out of my bag for close to a year to smack around the house with his plastic clubs (sometimes he even holds the club with both hands ).

He likes watching golf on TV too...every time a player hits ball (be it a putt, drive, or anything in between) he says "WOW! He hit the ball!" and looks at me to make sure I'm watching.

I hope he stays interested as he gets older. I can't think of anything I'd rather do than play with him.

    • Of course. I've used different words to start, but like 90-95% of the time it's been this one. And I'm unlikely to switch now.
    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
