ok guys, here is the situation.

You are in a greenside bunker, about 20 feet above the hole. The Bunker has no lips and you have a perfect lie. About 15 feet of rough between the bunker and the green and another 60 feet to the hole. The green is fast and running towards the hole.

Do you hit a blast bunker shot or just chip the ball?

I'll chip that ball with a 9 or 8 iron almost every time.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

I go texas style and putt it out. I've practiced it so I use it a lot when there is no lip. Since its sloped down towards the hole, that would be an ideal play since you just have to get it about 20 feet past the rough and gravity will do it's thang.

Since you said there is rough to clear I would probably do a normal blast bunker shot.

I'm pretty confident in my sand blasts so I'll probably go for that since it's an easier shot. Most likely I'll take a 56 to get some more roll out. If I didn't have any room to roll, I'd pick it with a wedge to spin it more but in this case, splash and roll it out.

Chip it out for spin and land it halfway to the hole and let the slope the the rest.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
