How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

I was looking into buying an approach wedge to have in my bag. I'm just not sure I would ever use it?

Thoughts? Do the people who have one use it. I usually will just go to a soft PW or full sand wedge?

I have a 50* and a 54* that I am soon swapping out for a 52*, but yeah I use them :)

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

This is something I've been considering for a while, the amount of times I stare at the pin thinking my 54 wont get there and my pw is way too much. Obviously I can take a little off my pw by gripping down but I really hate restricting my backswing, while I can usually judge it distance-wise, I loose the rhythm and thus, accuracy of my full swing. My problem is I just havn't got room in my bag, maybe I should drop my driver and buy a mizuno tourstyle 50, I could probably get away with loosing 20 yards off the tee.

Yes, because the gap between most PWs and SWs these days can be over 10 degrees. Most modern PWs are between 45 and 46 degrees while the standard SW is 55 degrees.

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

I use a gap wedge without it I would have:

9I - 130y
PW (47) - 120y
SW (56) - 90y
1/2 PW -75y
1/2 SW - 45y
1/2 LW - 30y

Adding the gap wedge:

9I - 135y
PW (47) - 120y
GW (52) - 105y
SW (56) - 90y
1/2 PW - 75y
1/2 GW - 60y
1/2 SW - 45y
1/2 LW - 30y

Works for me as the name implies.

yup, sure do.

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

I couldn't live without it.......

......well, I suppose I could, but I sure as heck wouldn't want to!

It's much easier and more consistent to hit the right club for the yardage, than it is to "take off" just the right amount of another club.

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

My 52ยบ gap wedge is the most used club in my bag next to my putter.

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

I have 4 wedges:

PW - 48* - 135y
GW - 52* - 120y
SW - 56* - 105y
LW - 60* - 90y

I dropped my 3-iron to accomodate this set. Some days I miss it, but I can just crank on a 4-iron and get the same result. I end up using the wedge set way more anyway.

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

used to but going with a different wedge set up makes me hit more flighted/feel shots and I am having a much better outcome.

I have a Cleveland CG14 52*

I love it.

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

All the time, it is my go to wedge. For the most part anything from 100 yards and in I use it, also for chipping.

You don't carry that 54* Vokey between your PW and the 58* anymore?

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

I use one as well. I have a 45 degree pitching, 51 degree, 58 degree, and 64. (my clubs are bent 2 degrees strong) I really like it. I had an old 52 that I really loved and could hit it 120 but it didn't spin enough. The mizuno I now have is about 105. I might go back to the old one some day.

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

I have one, and it's my 100-yard club as well as my go-to club around the green.

Re: How many people use an Approach/ Gap wedge?

I carry a gap wedge (bent to 50* but don't carry a PW). I end up with 5* loft gaps from 8i (40*) through LW (60*).
