I got paired with a guy who teed off only with irons. I've played with folks like that before, but this guy was consistently 25-35 yards behind me when I striped my driver (260-275) and he wasn't swinging all that hard, he was just administering a love tap and he did not carry a 2 iron as far as I could see. It was beautiful to watch, but I quit this game.

You just told him "sorry, but I won't be playing with you because you aren't using a driver and I am outdriving you"??

Wow, this is pathetic.

That's not what he's saying at all.

He's discouraged that someone else, using only irons, was basically hitting it as far as he was. To the OP, I know you realize this, but who cares? 260-275 with your driver is pretty good.

I think the last sentence was said in jest. I hit irons off the tee a lot when the driver isn't working. I love my 2 iron and am very confident with it. Typically get 230+ out of it

LOL......I hear ya!

I play with a good buddy who hits a sweet little going draw with a 3 iron that stays within spitting range of my driver and is usually farther than my 3-wood. As they say though, it isn't how , it's how many .

I will admit though, I'd rather win $5 off that rat-bastard than find a $100 bill on the ground!

I think this is part of the problem with golf. A lot of people obsess over what you're supposed to do rather than the outcome. My golf buddies dad is a retired AF Colonel. He used to play as a 2 handicap and was the most consistent player I've ever seen. I don't think I've ever seen him hit a drive more than 225 yards but he used to beat us mercilessly. The guy just never missed a fairway.

There's no detail on a scorecard only a number. Keeping it in play and scoring well is far more rewarding that striping 2-3 drives per round.

A friend of mine can hit his 4-iron past my driver, easily. And he's playing old blades. It doesn't bother me at all. Sure, I'm jealous of the distance he gets, but we're out to have fun. And besides, I enjoy seeing someone hit driver, 6-iron into a par-5.

Distance with some accuracy is a great benefit in golf. But you know what else helps keep your scores down? Playing your own game, independent of what anyone else in your group is doing.

Sounds like you might've been playing with the same guy. Guy only owned a set of Mizuno MP-52/62. No woods at all and was right behind me with his 3-iron. Wasn't all that bad though since I scored more par's than he did.

I played in a charity tournament yesterday. The group in front of us included my loud-mouth uncle, two older guys who were pretty decent, and a gentle giant who could crush it (also he must've spent $250 on beers for his group and anybody else around him). It was the first hole and I could hear him in the fairway saying "Did you guys see how far I hit this ball! I murdered it!" and while he was saying this I bombed my tee shot. It took one hop and hit him in the shoulder haha.

Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding.
I have a problem with long irons, I just seem to hit the same distance with the 6, 5, 4 and 3 irons. Unless I really nut one 4 iron, I can never tell the difference between it and a 6 iron.

On the other hand you can be like my dad. Tee to green he was a scratch golfer, on the green he was a 30 handicap.
