Recently I switched from chipping while just off the green with my 56° SW to my 47° PW with great success, leaving myself many one putts/chipping it in. My problem with the SW was leaving it short when doing a very small chipping motion (just a few feet off the green). The PW has allowed me to feel much more comfortable and I use a much more deliberate chipping motion. I still pull out the SW for in the bunker or when I am in almost any spot off the green that isn't within a few yards and is below the green. I am curious as to what you all use for the same type shots, though.

It depends. If I don't have much green to work with and the ball needs to sit right down, my 60*. For the ball to run out 5-7 feet after landing, my 52*. I am getting more and more partial to my 9i, but it really depends on the green and how far the pin is in relation to how much run out I want.

I pretty much practice chipping with my 7i-LW. After awhile you will find which one's you like the best. And don't forget about a 17 or 21* hybrid, they work great for shots off of the frog hair, (with a putting stroke)

I saw a dvd the other day that would be of great use to you (and many others). It was by Bobby Etheridge of Pure Point Golf. Check out the Pure Point Golf website. Get his short game dvd. You can get the short game and putting for a reduced price together. He has a ten dvd set for about $250. Getting ready to order it myself as I was very impressed with the first two. He has a very easy to understand system for pitching and chipping. Made lots of sense. I also got Phil Mickelson's newly released "Secrets of the Short Game" and it was excellent. Wonderful putting info and of course the flop shot was covered. But many other great things about this 2 dvd set by Phil. Impressive stuff.

Based on the lie and amount of green between my ball and the hole (and they layout of the green), I will use any club from my most lofted (56*) up to about a 7 iron. My goal is to get the ball on the green as quickly as possible and let it roll out to the hole. I saw on "Playing Lessons with the Pros" on Golf Channel a couple years ago where Tom Watson talked about his theory, which is to aim at a single spot on the green and decide which club he needed to use to get the ball to hit that spot and roll out to hole from there and that's the general rule of thumb I use now. The sooner you can get ball rolling the better.

I was taught to use the flattest club you can get away with. As Pikapp23 has mentioning the idea is to get the ball rolling.Obviously the pros have the touch to land it on a sixpence (aka lefty)but for once a week players simple is best

i use sw,pw,9i with a putting grip and putting stroke.

sw - short distance, very little roll ; good if the path between me and the hole is not ideal to roll the ball to the hole.

pw - same as sw but bit more roll than the sw

9i - if your off the fringe and still need to roll the ball, this is perfect. will get a small hop with a much longer roll than sw/pw. its like putting but being able to skip the rough/sprinkler head/divot/etc...

if you need a further roll, you can use a 7i as well.

remember putting stroke, don't break the wrists..

I am very different than others that have posted. I will use my 60 pretty much exclusively. I will use the 64 for really ackward shots but the 60 I can judge it better than flatter clubs. I have a really hard time judging the bump and run (I made stupid doubles when I tried to hit a chip with my pitching wedge and run through the other side of the green). I seem to not have as much control. When I got a good lie lots of green, I will deloft the 60 and use pretty much a putting stoke, hit down on it and let it roll out (chip). For me, this works better. I wish I had the time to really get good at chipping with other clubs but I do not have the time to work at it. I know I am not good at judging it so I stick with my gun, the 60 (well bent to 58). I am fearful of doing anything else right now unless it is severely up hill and I know I can not get my lob wedge there.

I'm the same way. I use the 60 for almost everything and will fly it all the way across a green and land it near the hole. It's what I practice all the time so I'm comfortable with it

Isn't that pitching instead of chipping? Just asking because there seems to be several conversations about the two different shots. (edit) I tend to chip with a flatter club (7I) and pitch with the wedges.....what am I missing by not chipping with a wedge?

I prefer chipping with an 8-iron but depending upon the distance I may use a 9-iron or a pitching wedge.
I dont really chip with my 52* or 60* wedges unless Im hitting a short little chunk 'n run. I find with those 2 clubs its too easy to hit it fat and have the ball only go about 5 feet.
For chipping, I basically use a putting stroke. I find that works best for me.

With a wedge you will get more airtime but less roll, which may or may not be an advantage depending upon the situation.

I used to only use my sandwedge around the greens (think I heard somewhere that Nicklaus did it that way, so why not, right?!?). My problem is, I would leave it short most of the time.

I switched this year to using different clubs as others have said, to get the ball rolling the quickest, but use the loft needed for the ball to roll out the distance you need -- less rollout, more loft. That pretty much puts me in the 9i, PW, SW categories. I find this method to give me much more consistency in getting the ball closer to the hole.

You can chip with a 60 degree wedge. Might not be common place. I have no idea. I do what works for me. I can deloft the club and make a putting stroke with a 60 degree and know what's going to happen. I have no clue what's going on with an 8 iron greenside. I just figured learning to use 1 club is a lot easier than learning 5. I might change my tune later on

I am exactly the same way. I do chip with it and can run it out. I play it off my back foot. I deloft it (chip it) or add loft (a pitch) depending on situation.

But there is no reason you can't chip with a LW if you use good technique. I try to take a tiny divot and do this with ball position and a putting stroke.

The standard use all club chipping method just doesn't suit me,I seem to get a multitude of contacts, sometimes I pick it clean, others it grabs the club, just can't get the stroke I want.

I work best using 52,56,60.If I'm just off the green or on the fringe then hitting a 8 iron is too much,I'd rather give it a short hop and roll out small.

I'm leaning towards the Utley method here, like a mini pitch.Funnily enough If I have 30 yards to go in front of the green with no obstacles then I use the 8 to bump and run, because I can really strike it,and that's how I like to do it,where I can swing fairly aggressively into the grass.

I read you should try to bruise the turf on a chip but I never seem to get the same effect every shot.My worse wedge is better than my worse chip and If I do get the pace wrong then with a wedge I'm on the dancefloor and not the other side of the green on the other fringe.

if I go by what you've said here, I guess I never chip haha.

I will only bump and run (chip) if its just a few very short yards. I'm constantly lobbing it real high to have it 'stick' right on the hole. my buddies give me crap because I'm so devoted to lobbing it from almost any spot around the green, but I just feel more confident. if the ball is in the air, then you don't have to worry about reading the breaks on the green :)

Thank you for mentioning this! I have been using my 54 degree, and had a terrible day with it this weekend. I went to my P or W where there is room to roll out, and use the 54 for sand, flops, or where there isn't room to roll out.

Another thing that I was doing was using too much backswing and decelerating through the ball. I have the confidence with the P and W to utilize less backswing and accelerate through the ball and the results have me happy!
