I went to the Barclays classic today and have some stuff to share. First off I have never been a big fan of Mickelson until now. My friend is a police officer in the town where the Classic was being played. His detail today was to escort the golfers off of the 18th hole through the tunnel and just stand by them so that they dont get bombarded with people rushing them. He said he stood by Mickelson for about a half hour. He didnt turn one guy down for an autograph, was thanking the fans for watching them play golf. Then he went to take a picture with a kid in a wheelchair and the camera went dead. So Phil said to the family I will watch out for you next week at Winged Foot, come there and Ill make sure we get a picture together. So Phil walks away and a fan says that they can use their camera and they will email the family the pictures. My friend goes and gets Phil about a minute later and my friend says Phil couldnt have been more excited. They took pictures and then Phil signed autographs for about another thirty minutes.

Vijay on the other hand was telling all the fans before the round that he only signs autographs after he plays. Well after he played he skated away and didnt sign one autograph.

I went to the Mercedes and the only time Vijay would sign was before or after his range time. Although there were many other pros who just didn't sign at all!

I like him as well.

I'm thinking he has a personality type that might not be understood as well as some other ones might be. . . you know what I mean? Maybe a slight lacking of natural charisma, or even 'aggressiveness', sets up against the more arrogant types so they go against him. Not to mention his calibre is above most.

Then again, how can I say for sure. The above could account for 90% of the reason he's not liked by some people, or 20%, or 0%. Would have to see him in person.

Really nice story, I actually enjoy reading it.

From what ive read Ive heard Vijay has a really good sense of humor. But then again like you said who knows? My buddy said that you couldnt have asked for a better professional then what he saw in Phil today so that says alot. Its nice to see.

Funny cause Ive never been a big Phil fan. That smile and nod he has when he approaches every green is weird. But I have to say these fans were yelling at him today (good things) and he smiled and chuckled and went along with it.

Phil's detractors would say that this is simply part of his "phoniness." That he does it simply because it increases his income.

I personally put a substantial amount of weight into what a golfer's peers think of him. Vijay is well loved, Phil is not.

You could just go with my approach. I don't really care for either Phil or Vijay. The less favorites I have, the less time for disappointments.

I do believe Phil halfway means it when he signs autographs and gives back to fans. He may be "Phony Phil" sometimes, but I think he is genuine a lot of the time as well. And like I've mentioned before, at least he acts like he cares. That matters to a lot of little kids. That's why a lot of casual fans don't care for Vijay. He just comes off as an ass sometimes. That's ok though because I would probably act the same way if I was a pro golfer. I'm kind of an ass myself.

I like Phil I don't know every conversation he's ever had but he always seems to be a good role model. I guess I'd rather see a guy who's phony and gives kids a good example of behavior then someone who's real and is a jerk on the course.

Another first class guy is Bob estes, not taking anything away from phil, bob is up there. During the pga at whisteling straits, he signed almost everybody's hat, it took him over an hour and he is quite the man, taking his time out for the fans. If there were more pros like him.....

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
