Just one, open your stance, open the face and push the ball. Any amount of pull or draw will put over spin on the ball. Play around with aligning 5-25 yards left and pushing the ball.

Although what I described isn't exactly what should happen it will help you spin the ball a lot more. Kind of like if I tell my friend to open up 20 yards left of the target he will still be 5 yards closed, to the target.

Oh and others might say to have a steeper angle or to hit the ball first but this is because they already have a really good swing, as far as plane goes anyway.

Play to your strengths and land it a few yards before until you learn to get more backspin. Also, if you want to have it sit you can try to fade the ball.

I don't mean to be rude, but with a 18 hc I'd just concentrate on getting good consistant ball striking down. Once you've done that then start to concentrate on accelerating the club head thru the shot. (That is where lots of us screw up cuz we tend to decelerate thru the shot). Putting the ball back a little in the stance will give you a steeper angle of attack which will help to spin the ball.

Also, there a basically 2 types of balls out there; a distance ball and a spinny ball. The distance ball is as stated; its designed to go long and straight which means little spin. Subsequently, they do not spin very well with any club. Then there are the "spinny" balls which tend to be tour quality balls. Becuz they spin they tend to be shorter off of the tee and more prone to fade/draw b/c of the spin with all of the clubs. But on the other hand b/c they spin they are more prone to check up with the short irons and wedges. I'll give you a personal example. I went to the Bridgestone Ball fitting thing they have. With my usual ball, which is a Sixon URS I was getting 5600 rpm on the ball, which means I was loosing around 10 or so yds. They tee'd me up with the e6+ and all of a sudden the ball rpm's were 2800 and I was going around 275 yds or so. (I play the e6+ for my winter ball b/c they are long, the greens are receptive and I don't mind loosing them). The draw back to the e6+ was they don't check up well on firm or hard greens. So after some contemplation I've gone back to the Sixon URS b/c I can work them better, they check up much better on firm and hard greens, but are around 10 yds shorter than the e6+. Personally I'll give up the extra 10 yds for better action working the ball and especially for the way they can check up on the greens. Hey, but thats just me; I know my game and thats is the stuff I look for

If mentioned above that if your around a 20 handicap you shouldnt worry about getting backspin. At what point should you work on the spin.

Once you get your swing where it needs to be and you are hitting down on the ball with the hands leading the club, the spin will come. For now, I would suggest, as stated above, just play the shot and give yourself the room for it to roll out....this is how Stan Utley does it anyway.
