We played at Golf Club of Georgia when the greens were a 13. Only one player in our foursome had under 40 putts.

There's no point in playing when the greens are like glass, in my opinion. At least, not while trying to score.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

I play a course sometimes that might as well have painted concrete for a green. I hate that because not only do you miss easy putts, you can't stick even an easy lob wedge on them. I just toss the scorecard aside and have fun trying.

yep, there's a couple courses here where if you hit on, you'll often roll off the back, so hitting short of the green and rolling it up on is necessary.

was that a real dog?

I don't know if I have or not. I have played on extremely fast greens before, but I don't know about the hardness of them. I hit a really high ball with a ton of spin so I don't ever see a ball roll forward too much.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

i played on insanely fast greens the other day for the first time..... it actually wasn't a bad day, yet i managed to score in the high 90s. it's a tough course and the first time i played it. i definitely had a few 5 putts, 4 putts and lots of 3 putts. BUT, I managed to get two birdies in the round..... which just makes me think the fast greens aren't THAT bad once you adjust. It should have been 3 birdies.......... but i was too lazy to pick up my ball after hitting it close on a par 3, and turns out it was sitting on a divot so it just popped out and ruined a good putt.

long putts are one of my biggest weaknesses... and i really enjoyed that on the fast greens i didnt have to struggle to get the ball close to the hole.

Greens get like this in Texas mid summer (we can have no rain for 70+ days so the clay ground hardens into a rock) The trick is to land the ball just in front of the green (obviously can't use this technique if bunker) or at the very front of the green.

If less than 35 yards out, I will sometimes use my 4H and use it like a putter.

When it gets dry, hot, and windy I use a low knockdown (from 160-70 yards) that lands infront of the green and rolls on (similar to what you often see at the British Open---of course my shots don't end up 5 feet from the pin-more like 10-25feet)

The second course im a member at is a 9 Hole Muni. This year the greens are horrid. I've played about 6 rounds there so far, it is a beautiful course, but this year their greens are burned and brown. and super slick. Hitting a GIR is soooo hard because everytime you hit the green, the ball rolls forever, off into the fringe or worse. The bounce on the green is high too.

I played in a foursome there thursday, and noone shot close to what they usually do because the putting is so bad. I was 8 yards from the green on my second shot of a par 5, and hit a nice little wedge shot to the pin. Damn near sank it, about 8 inches away, good backspin. It turned backwards and started rolling slowly backwards. Then it picked up speed doewn a very slight slope, and rolled off into the fringe. What should have been an easy birdy turned into a horrible bogey because of the greens. Even easy puts roll almost the whole green. horrible.

Well then you should have adjusted.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Well then you should have adjusted.

I used to hate when people said stuff like this, but you are totally right. It is never the course's fault that you can't stick a shot. If it runs forever, slow it down a bit. After the first nine you should be adjusted to how the greens are, sucky or not.

Intersting that this came up. I just dealt with it today. It was like they forgot to water them for a week. Fast greens don't bother me. Fast greens that are baked and crusty and therefore don't run true bother me. In fact I absolutely stinking LOVE really fast greens that are still true. Not the case today.

For my first tournament, we played at a course that I've played at a ton of times, but my father said they "verticut" the greens.

Well, I'm not entirely sure what verticut means, but damn were they fast. They are usually pretty quick and roll very true, but these were insane.

First day, I routinely ran putts by 3-5 feet. The next two days, I got my stroke down and was able to keep them in tap-in range, but still didn't make a whole lot of putts.

I hit at least 5-6 putts that when they came off the face, i thought "well...that's half way"...and then they ended up right by the hole.

I like semi-fast greens. Slow, uncut, hairy greens drive me nuts.

Well, I'm not entirely sure what verticut means, but damn were they fast. They are usually pretty quick and roll very true, but these were insane.

Verticut greens maintenance is designed to strengthen the turf to allow for a more consistent putting surface, and a byproduct is speed because the green is smoothed out as a result of removing lateral growth.

Check out this page on verticutting, it is very informative. http://www.golfdom.com/golfdom/Featu...e/detail/93306

the one i was talkin about has green speeds posted outside the pro shop

That's a nice feature- never seen that one before. I'm usually left to base speed off of what the practice green is like. Although knowing the stimpt # and understanding the difference between 10 & 13 is a whole 'nother matter!

I love hard fast greens when I can find them. Concrete's a little different, but that's when you go British Open golf. A lot of bump n run from 10-20 yards out. Throw in some Texas wedge shots. Typically if I have to carry a short iron onto the green, I'll take a steeper angle and more agressive swing hoping for more spin. You gotta take what the course gives you and make lemonaide. I like that it makes me think different out there. YMMV.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
