I have now a taylormade r5 and I was first interested in getting the 909 d2, until I demoed it. It looked bulky and too big at address. How is the 909d3 different from my r5 in terms of miss-hits? I first went to he d2 because I thought the d3 was totally unforgiving, just wanted to hear from 909 d3 owners.

I've had one since January and love it. I never hit an R5 but 909D3 has been equal to or better on mis-hits than anything else I've hit.

And I agree, the 909D2 did look to big at address. The D3 looks much better.

Ive been using a 9.5 D3 for about a month now. Im generally happy with it, but not blown away. The head shape reminds me of my old 905R, which is a club i loved. It very easy to work the ball with the D3, if that is what you choose to do off of the tee.

I wouldnt call it forgiving, but its manageable and for a low handicap it is forgiving enough. Its a low launcher and will twist on toe side miss-hits. Admittedly, im unhappy with the stock voodoo shaft and im probably going re-shaft with the proforce V2 i had in my 905R very soon.

The stock Voodoo sucks, I got it in my 3 wood in X flex and it felt like a twig and ballooned all over the place.

I didnt like it in the 19 909 hybrid i used to have either. You'd expect better from titliest. I guess they just whiffed on that shaft like they did with the 907drivers.

The taylormade r5 looks very similar than the d3 at address. The r5 has a smaller more compact shape compared to the d2. I researched the amount of MOI the d3 has and it has a MOI of 4600. I dont know the MOI a r5 has, but I think it is similar because when back in the day when it came out, there wasnt so much hype on driver forgiveness.

Also- is the trajectory as low as people make it to be? Is the trajectory similar to the 907d2?

You should definitely see a lower ball flight but it's nothing extreme. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that all things equal, the D3 only lowers the trajectory by one degree from the D2 and two degrees from the D Comp.

I've hit the D2 and D3 quite a bit and during my fitting session on the Trackman hit both as well. I had virtually the same numbers from both the D2 and D3. I chose the D3 because I liked the size of the clubhead.

There's this site out there, I think it's called The Sand Trap, and they do these really awesome, in-depth reviews, with pictures and charts and a whole lot of stuff. Anyway, I think that's where I got this image.

The Sand Trap? What's that?

Ok, so sue me, I was just a little off and too lazy to search for the correct answer. Looks like the D2 is less than a degree lower than the DComp and the D3 is about a degree lower than the D2.

I also know that the d3 has a MOI of 4600 and the d2 has a 4800 MOI. Almost no difference at all.

Hey, I'm just glad you didn't over-react to my sarcasm. I was just teasing you, so thanks.

Yep. And those numbers will change slightly depending on your attack angle, swing speed, the ball you play, etc. Guidelines, they are. Yoda, I am not.

Because everyone is different, my experiences may not be the same as yours. I played just about all of them (except the Dcomp), and settled back on the 907 D2 as optimal for me. The 909 D3 was a little lower launch and the carry was not quite as far. It might have been longer on hard fairways, but not longer on typical fairways with softer grass, or for forced carries. However, my opinion may not mean much since my overall second place choice is still the old 905 driver. It all depends on the after market shaft you match to your swing. My first choice is the 907 D2 with 8.5 degrees and a high kick point tour X shaft by Aldila at 60 grams. Others find this one a little stiff and hard to turn over, but it fits me well.

The D3 definitely has a nice boring trajectory, but it does have a tendency of leaking to the right, so it's good if your miss is a hook/pull, but not for a push/slice. It's an amazing driver, but you will need a custom shaft. (Stock options either feel horrible or cause ballooning.)

In my stand bag:
909D3 with 10.5 degrees of loft and a 45 inch Fujikura Rombax 6Z08, x-flex
909F3 15* with a stock Diamana Blue
FT 18* with an Aldila NV
X-forged ('07), 3-PW with Project X 6.0 CG12, 53/11, and 58* with DSG Red X2, 33"All with Lamkin Crossline Full Cord. (except the putter of...

How do you get custom shafts? is there any way to get fitted to the right shaft?

One more question- Could I buy my driver on ebay (cause its alot cheaper) and still get a custom fitted shaft?

At my Golf Galaxy I saw the thing with the club heads and shafts for them and interchangability so you can try any shaft, any head. Never used it, still got my 6 year old driver, but it was there. If you figured out what you wanted, just paid for the fitting, you could probably find it on ebay.

Yeah, I knew you were teasing. It would really be hypocritical of me to over-react to sarcasm as I'm about the most sarcastic person I know.

I tried probably 15 different shafts when I got fitted for my D3. I ended up going with the Matrix XCON6 and tipping it 1/2 inch. It's the "made for Titleist" shaft but I like it. Being that you're a +2 I assume your swing speed is much faster than my 112, but I did not notice any ballooning when I demoed the D2 and D3 and thought a lot of the stock shafts felt pretty good. Wasn't a big fan of the Voodoo though.

You can go to a Titleist demo day and get fitted usually. They will have a launch monitor setup and a cart with interchangeable heads and shafts for you to try. Just have to try a lot of them to see what works the best for your swing. Once you've demoed them and found what seems to be the right fit for you, you could definitely purchase it from ebay if you can find it there.
