I've been using the Mizuno MP-001 3 wood with a stiff shaft flex for the last 3-4 years. I've been thinking of upgrading in this department since I have no business touching a driver. So, my question is, which 3 wood you suggest. I'm also thinking about going with a regular flex this time around.

I've been thinking a Ping or Titleist. Just wanted to see some suggestions you guys may throw out. Thanks!

some of my favorite 3 woods:

1. Sonartec GS Tour
2. Mizuno MX-700
3. Mizuno F-60
4. Nickent Fairway Wood #3

with the exception of the mx-700, ALL can be bought for under $100 on Ebay. usually they are in the $50-$75 range. all of them are great 3 woods

Ping G10's are amazing, as well as last years raptures, which are dirt cheap now if you can find em. But my nike woods are by far my favourite clubs to hit!

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)
TaylorMade RBZ 5 & 3 Fairway Woods

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

Edel Forged 48, 52, 56, 60, and 64* wedges (different wedges for different courses)

My personal choices for 3W narrowed down to 2:

1) Ping G10 15.5*
2) Mizuno F60 15*

Gamed both for awhile, both very forgiving ang the F60 is workable.

Nike Dymo, Ping G10. or stick with Mizzy and get the MX700. Cant speak for the Titleist woods, I've never hit them, and I personally dont know anyone that plays their woods. Oh, and I do know a couple of people that play the TM R7 3&5 woods, and are pretty happy with them. You can probably get a good deal on those as well.

I'm really liking my Adams Speedline 3 wood, getting about 220-230 carry. If you are on a budget, I'd say go with the Mizuno F-60. I had trouble hitting the Titleist 909 series fairway woods so I'm against going with those. Good luck on your search!

I had a Titleist 904f until it broke. I'm thinking of getting it re-shafted. It's great for the price (I got it for $50 used a few months ago, you can probably get it for like $40 now).

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm leaning towards the G10 3 wood. I'll see if someone local has one for sale.

My swing speed was 89 last time I checked. I thought that was pretty low. But, it is what it is. I'm guessing regular flex will work then?

Look for the F-60. I think either rockbottomgolf or tgw had them on special this weekend.

When I went throughmy selection process a few months ago, I tried the F-60, but was buying used, and could not find it in regular flex. I ended up going with a titliest 906F4. I found that I had great success off the tee at 220 - 230, and around 210 - 220 of the deck. I was really surprised to be able to hit a Titliest so well, when they are designed for better players.
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

Like a broken record, I continue to extol the virtures of an old club design... The Callaway Bertha Steelheads. I have tried many three woods, and have observed trends in design closely. It is interesting how many newer models of three wood (and other woods) are trending back to the earlier designs like the venerable steelheads. Steelheads are forgiving to hit off tight lies or light rough because of the radius of the sole. They are as solid as a hammer. You can get them for very reasonable prices from Callaway Preowned online. The clubs I've gotten from them are graded as to quality and the top quality rated ones are essentially the same as new.

My favorite of all is the 13 degree strong 3+, but I also carry a steelhead 7 wood for a rescue wood. I have the 15 degree model as a back up. My strong three came with a stiff RCH 65 shaft, and it is as easy to hit as any three wood I know. My second choice would be a Sonartec 3 wood (great club) -- but I think they are no longer in business (forgive me if I am wrong) so you would also need to find one online or used. Remember, the shaft is super important, not just the brand or head design.

Check out this link:

http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25627 . ApocG10 found a really good price on the G10 fairway woods at theworldofgolf.com . Check them out, I'm pretty sure he found that they are an authorized Ping dealer, so you should be in good shape buying from them. Awesome choice, good luck with your purchase!

RocketSauce,

You must have used, or still have, a Steelhead. I have tried to find something newer, something better... and finally, I have just given up -- might as well keep playing the Steelhead. So, earlier this year, I restocked, getting essentially new ones (from Preowned) to replace the old ones. To my great satisfaction, the new replacements, while not worn at all (like new), felt just like my old ones so now I feel set for the foreseeable future. A funny thing happens to me alot. People I am playing with will say, "Is that a Steelhead? I used to have one of those, and wish I still had it." -- or words to that effect.

I must have hit 10 different new 3 woods trying to find something else. Some were great off the fairway, but hard to hit in the first cut, others were good unless caught a little thin, and some were so wide and flat soled that any uneven lie would make them a bad choice. The old trusty Steelheads hits the ball and it feels like driving a nail flush with one swing of the hammer -- solid.

I see you have a Sonartec... great clubs.

    • So, last night was the first night of golf league. First tee I stuck in the ground this year. First time hitting a ball off the grass. Left my putter on my indoor putting mat in the office so I was able to borrow one of my pal's spare putters. I putted poorly, but not the putters fault. Took me forever to realize the greens were very very slow. We've had tons of rain and the greens were downright furry. I also went from my car to the clubhouse to the first tee. No warm up.  It took me a bit to get it going. But finished solid. I think I had four penalty strokes in the first 5 holes.
