Well all I can say is all my work has paid off :)

Took him to a local course where they teach kids to golf so they have Kids tee's. Its a fairly easy course. Hitting from the "yellow" tees which are about 30 yards forward of the "womens" tees.

He's 7, I've been teaching him since last year. 1st time out he shot a 50, no BS.
2 pars in a row, almost had a chip in birdie if he would have hit it 1/2" harder he would have had it.

Need to work on his putting some more, but hey I'm proud of him. He practices almost every day. Sad thing is he can beat most of my friends

Wow, that's amazing! I have a great nephew who is 7 and I just asked a friend of mine who builds clubs to make a 7 iron for him from an old club. Kid is a small kid but he's strong. He tries to hit my clubs in my yard and they are way too long, so, maybe he can hit this. I thought of taking him to a course where no one is playing to show him what it's about but then thought heck no, he shouldn't even see a course for awhile. Any recommendations or a club or clubs?

The Red tees are the RED TEES not the woman's tees.
He will never play them if you call them the woman's tees.

You have to go with youth clubs. Cutting down a club does not work well because the club is too heavy and the shaft flex is wacky. We have a place locally that has a youth turn in program. Buy a set at full price and turn it in for full credit towards a new set as he/she grows. It is very helpful to have them in a correct size club.

Good luck and enjoy!

I put "womens" because a lot of courses mark their tees with different colors. This course goes Blue, White, Red, yellow (kids). I've seen many variations just wanted to explain...

Go to Target they have Nike kids clubs for like $20-30 and their designed by height. Dicks Sporting goods has a Walter Hagen line for kids as well.

Just wait until he beats you. Happened to me this year with my 15 year old. My only loop hole was that it was only 9 holes. Just a matter of time...

Congrats to your son. He is definitely better than some of my friends. Sounds like you also had a great round. I bet your score did not matter this time.

Well all I can say is all my work has paid off :)

You are a really great Dad to be doing this with your son...it will pay dividends beyond golf per se.

I have the pleasure of teaching three of my grandsons to play golf (within the bounds of my layman's skills). They are now 16, 14, and 10. I have been working with them for about 3 years. Last year I gave them each their own golf clubs/bag, etc. so they could begin to have responsibility for the equipment. We have great times on the range and on the course and, naturally, a nice meal afterwards. They have learned the terminology, the etiquette, and the rudiments. We don't play often, but we have fun. And great conversation.

To the OP, what was your teaching method, in general? I find it amazing he shot 50 first time ever. That seems quite incredible.

Man, I think that's so freakin awesome! Seriously, I'm 28, single, and really don't want to get married, but it's reasons like that that I believe I could deal with marriage. I dont want the wife, but I really cant wait to have a son. Teaching him golf, baseball, football, and anything else he wants to learn is probably one of the most anticipated things in my life. I think that it all comes from how much enjoyment my dad and I get out of playing golf together.

We usually play together every Sunday, and we've often talked about what if I would have gotten into the game much earlier. When I was your son's age, baseball was pretty much the only thing in the world that mattered, and he tries to blame himself for not introducing me to golf when I was really young. I cant quite get him to understand that it doesnt really matter, because Sunday is usually the most anticipated day of the week for me, and I'm just happy that we can both play now. Anyway, sorry for rambling, but know that you're doing an awesome thing, and it will be something that you both will enjoy together for the rest of your life!

That is awesome. My daughter is 6, and we have been hitting in the yard. In July we are taking lessons together. I have plans to have her ride with me in the cart for a round next week to give her a feel for a round of golf. I hope she takes to the game like your son has.
