Well... somehow I totally lost my sand wedge. I don't know if I left it on a course or at the range or its just somewhere around the house hiding from me. Luckily it was only $25 or so. I have been wanting to upgrade to a nicer club since I use it so much and the grooves were starting to wear down.

Nevertheless, I am looking for suggestions on a new sand wedge. I play on typical midwest courses, usually fairly dry but slow greens. I am really hoping to keep it well under $100 but at the same time I want to get a really good value for my money since I don't have a lot of it . My other wedges are 52* and 60* so I am looking at a 56* for the replacement, but I don't really know what bounce to get. I like the get a lot of spin on my pitch shots if that helps.

Thanks

I like my Adams Tom Watson 56 deg (13 deg bounce). I tend to make very good contact with it. I think it was ~$50 new, but I don't recall exactly, but definitely << $100. Only bummer is that the swank gun-metal finish rubs off as soon as you use it in the sand, but I don't particularly care about the appearance.

The bounce will depend on the conditions of the courses you currently play in conjuction with whether you are a "digger"or a "slider". That being said, if you chose to go with something that has a dynamic sole grind, you can get the best of both worlds. I believe it should be managable to get a cLeveland wedge with this type of design for the price range you're looking at. Ebay may be a decent option.

do golf stores like golfdiscount typically allow you to hit wedges on the range if they are taped up? I am a bit leary of just buying a new wedge without trying it.

Also, how much better are all of the $110 wedges like the titleist spin milled vokeys? I don't want to buy something that I regret just to save a few bucks since I am trying to slowly build a nice set of clubs.

Golf Galaxy is clearing out CG 10s for $69.99.

There are tons of CG 11s on ebay for $41. And they are brand new, still in the wrap, with decals still on them.

No zip grooves, but you won't find better wedges under $100.

I like to play my wedge shots either way (dig or slide, though mostly a slider) depending on the hole placement and green slope. I recently got a Cleveland 588 Dynamic Sole Grind 56 deg. sand wedge and just like you said, it's the best of both worlds. Currently my most accurate club. Feels like playing lawn darts. Very happy with it.

i just posted this in another thread, but you should look at the Cleveland CG14's. I just participated in a WEDGE SHOOTOUT (just Google " Wedge Shootout " and the site will come up) and the CG14's came out on top in almost every category, including performance and spin. practically every major oem was represented in the testing too. I was one of the 18 testers.

Well after more thought I have decided that if I am going to have to buy a new club, I would rather get something I will be happy with for a long time. I think I will go check out some of the nicer ones tomorrow at golf discount.

You might also take a look at the TaylorMade RAC Satin TP wedges. The 56 has 12 deg bounce, and they have the milled y grooves and a dynamic sole grind of sorts. They are also dirt cheap right now (50 - $70)

I played they SW and LW for a month or so. I really liked them around the greens, as they were versatile, and made the ball check nicely. I gave them to my brother as a gift, as I never seemed to be able to hit them as consistently as I would have liked on full swings. I just got the matching R7 SW and LW for my set, and have yet to play a round with them. At the range, I hit full shots better, but it remains to be seen if they will perform as well as the RAC's around the green.

IMHO, spend the money and buy a quality wedge that you won't need to replace when you start upgrading your bag. As a mid/high hdc'r you will have more up and down opportunities then a low hdc. Just facts of life. You'll be chipping and pitching alot around the greens and next to your putter, will probably be your most used club.

Now i'm not saying buying a SM Vokey, CG, or any of the Name Brands will make you a short game master, but it will most defineatly show you when you're correctly clipping the ball by rewarding you with some ball action. maybe a little at first but you get the idea. Balls pitched with a cheap wedge that roll by the hole will check up.

Spend the extra money now, learn to use it, and you won't have to dish it out later when you get better. Brand new SM vokey's are $109. Cheaper on Ebay. Or at least get a used one to get the feel for it. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input. I have thought about it for a while now and I am leaning towards getting a SM vokey or a CG14 based on the reviews I have read. I need to put some serious work into my pitching/chipping game because that is where I tend to make a bunch of extra strokes as I tend to have a decent long game (if I can keep the driver in the bag on tight holes to keep the ball in play). If I have a club that I fall in love with I think that I will be more inclined to practice those important shots.

Slow greens....really slow greens....hurt your game....IMHO.

Best thing is to get ready for better times (9-12 on the ole Stimpmeter).

You'll do well with the Vokeys. I dont' game them because I'm stupidly infatuated with my current shaft, grip, etc. and can get that from PING.

My Dad's Vokeys have made a huge difference in his game.

I ended up picking one of these up at dicks today. I got the 56*, 2 dot variety (14* bounce). I hit several balls with it at the range and it has a really nice feel. It was hard to really get a feel for how well it spins the ball with those crappy range balls and lack of real greens to aim for. I am looking forward to using it next time I get to play a round.
