JB Holmes on a par 5 today drove it 341 (which is monster itself) and then hit a 6 iron from 243 to 3' from the hole

6 iron from 243!!! Aye caramba

He might be able to hit it past some of you long guns here j/k

Other than the fact that it was J.B. Holmes, it might have been downhill, or with the wind, or so on. Some of these bizarre distances happen in such circumstances.

Yesterday playing in the group with Tiger and Charley Hoffman, Lucus Glover drove the ball 366yds. They said on the coverage that that was the longest drive on that hole for the day. He did get a hand from the slope of the hole. I'm not surprised about JB though. He was listed as the longest driver at the US Open averaging a smidge over 306yds.

Woah let's not get ahead of ourselves.

That is one thing you can never tell on TV. How severe a slope might be, or what kind of wind there is. Still a pretty impressive shot.

The long drives on tour are much longer than you think. Just because a guy might average 295 or 308 doesn't mean that can't hit it much, much further than that. If you look at the stats page on pgatour.com there is a stat for longest drive. There are 42 drives over 400 yards and a drive of 388 wouldn't get you in the top 100. Mostly downhill/downwind holes for sure, but some of those guys can put it out there in the right conditions.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

They count par 3's in average driving distance.

I believe that they pick two holes in opposite directions and only use those holes.

I doubt they'd pick a par-3 to be part of that.

Quite true. Yesterday from an elevated tee-box (10 meters above the fairway) with the wind at my back (a steady 20 mph) I hit a tee-shot that traveled an extra 50 yards. That left me with only a half-swing gap-wedge to the green on this 390-yard par-4. That is

not normal. But of course, that came after slicing two drives into the water hazard... my round was cooked long before this... For what it's worth, Jason Zuback says he hits his 6-iron 220 yards under normal conditions. I could see JB Holmes hitting it 200, plus another 43 yards due to elevation/wind. Tim

I can't imagine looking at a 243-yard shot to the green and deciding to pull out my 6-iron.

Maybe if it was down a mountain

LOL - my thought exactly. What makes this really incredible is -

if that his not his normal 6I distance then how good are these guys (caddies included) at judging the effects of wind/downhill/uphill/lie etc? For me that would have been 7I or 8I to lay up and wedge to green (3W if I had a beer at the turn!) Wow!!!

The only thing I'd be doing with a 6-iron in my hand from 243 is laying up for a SW or LW into the green on the next shot.

I was on the 10th hole during the Ryder Cup and saw him hit 8 iron from 210 to about 3 feet on a 598 yard hole. Most guys were hitting hybrids into that hole and he hit an 8 iron!

yes JB is rediculous. He swings so hard. Do you remember 16 and 17 at the Ryder Cup. He just killed it on both. He hits it so far and high. His ball flight seemed to be twice as high as the others when they did the shot tracer.

What a beast.

I lol'd.

He can hit it a mile. I don't care about conditions, a 243 yard 6 iron is a beast. SO was Lucas Glove's 366 and Tigers 367 yard drives. I agree with some of you all too, I can't imagine seeing a 243 yard shot, and deciding 6 iron should leave me pretty close. If I had a caddy, he'd smack me upside the head.

JB is super long. When he played for UK he played a lot of a course that I play a lot and I've been told by the pro where some of his drives have ended up and it's unbelievable.

First of all, the driving range at this course ends at 295. I fly the ball about 260 and it usually will roll out to the end of the range. JB flies it over the 8 foot high fence at 295. There's also a par 5 out there that if I hit driver good, I'll have anywhere from a 5 - 3 iron in. JB had a 9 iron once and was playing a tee box behind where we typically play.

He's long...
