How the hell do they work this out? i have been playing golf for 3 years and i have never looked it up, i have a general idea of what the ratings are but is there a tool i can buy to do it or what?

- I might search this in google ey??

How fast are your clubs greens during club championships? (sorry if this has been done before)

Ahhhh... Its actually called a 'stimp' meter....

Yeh that took me three years to work out. You learn something new every day

How it works:

The Stimpmeter is an aluminum bar, 36 inches long, with a

V-shaped groove. The ball release notch, located 30- inches from

the end that rests on the ground, is designed so that a golf ball

will always be released and start to roll when the Stimpmeter is

raised to an angle of approximately 20 degrees. The distance

traveled on a flat portion of the green in feet is the number given.

This is an average of several greens.

I like how you put less than 1 as an option. Is that even possible? Maybe in frisbee golf.

In any case, I think the poll is interesting, but I'm guessing it's conjecture for some. The tournaments I've played in don't explicitly state what the greens are rolling at, but you always hear numbers through the grapevine so to speak. I think the poll would be better served at more minute and relevant increments. e.g. 8-9, 9-10, 10-11, etc...

Just my opinion.

I believe it's actually more than just one measurement. When the crew does it at my club, they measure 3 attempts on a downhill slope, 3 on an uphill slope, and 3 on a relatively flat area. They do this on at least 3 greens and then average the numbers.

The last reading I heard about was 11.4. It's not a number they plan for necessarily, but more a by-product of their maintenance procedures... cutting height, cutting frequency, rolling frequency, etc.

When I built my real bent green I called the USGA to buy a stimp meter and they made me tell them exactly how I built my green before they would even sell me one.I still have it if someone wants to buy it,I paid 50.00 something for it but we could strike a deal.

My closest course doesn't measure this, so I've got no clue, but it's a small course, greens are probably below 5 I'd say. The 18 hole course I play the most are currently at 10.

I think the question is, how fast are the greens during club championships (or other major tournaments), not how fast they are all year long. For those who don't know, clubs typically double cut and/or roll greens to make them much faster during tournament play.

I've played a member/guest as a guest at my fathers club in NC for 11 years running. Their greens are blazing fast and the rumor is they run at a 13 or so. Again, not official word but I'll make sure to ask the Superintendent this year when I see him. The tourney is in 2 weeks.

      At What Distance do Your Pull Our Your Range Finder?

      I am a huge numbers guy and if a number can be applied to something, I want to know what it is.  Even in golf, I will pace off short chips as I have a 10 yard, 20 yard, and 30 yard shot whereas I take the club back a certain distance for each.  I have heard the comparison to basketball players that they do not know their exact distance to the basket, they just use their eye sight and adjust which I know a lot of golfers do as well when within a certain distance to the pin.  My question is, what is that distance for you?  I was at the range today and was hitting wayward  balls to a flag that I had no idea what it's exact distance was, I estimate that I was at times as close as 40 yards and as far away as 70 yards.  I was amazed at how accurate I was having not known the distance to the flag.  Temps me to not use my range finder within say 70 yards and go by look and feel.  What say you?

      That's not just sandbagging, that's cheating. Under Rule 3.3 for posting most likely scores, for example if there was a 2 foot putt for par, one can only take one extra stroke from what they lie, meaning par in that instance, not bogey. I didn't check the other instances but you can.
