Hybrid or 5 Wood or 2 iron?

I need to fill a hole in my yardages, and am not sure if I should try a hybrid, 5 wood, or 2 iron first.

Currently, I have a Callaway Great Big Bertha 3 Wood (15 degree) that I hit about 260 off the tee and 240 or so off the turf. My next club down is my 3 iron (22 degree), that I hit about 200 both off the tee and off the turf.

On the courses I play, I really need something I can hit about 220 - 230 off the tee and 220 off the turf. I'll be using it to tee off on about 6/18 holes on each course and maybe 2 - 3 times off the turf (mostly as second shots on par 5's).

Ability to shape the shots is not a concern, (most shots will be straight) but ability to hit consistently straight will be. For this reason, I am leaning towards the 5 wood, but welcome all other thoughts. I hear that the Tour Edge Geomax hybrids are bigger like a fairway wood, so I'm also considering that.

I plan to try for a few rounds and exchange if necessary, but obviously would like to get it right the first time.

(FWIW, I can not find a 2 iron that matches my set, so it would be a newer club or any brand really)

If you're gonna be firing at greens, probably a hybrid would be best. They're designed to be as controllable as an iron (same length shaft) but will hit it higher so it will land softer. Most folks can't hit a 3 iron high enough as is, but if you can then maybe hit both and see how you feel. I'm not a big 5 wood fan, but that's just me. I play a 3 iron and 2 hybrid usually, but sometimes I put a 3 hybrid in the bag. Just depends on how I'm striking the ball.

Get a Taylormade Burner Rescue 19º if you are not worried about shot shape. These are super easy to hit out of any lie and will drop down nice and softly. If you want something that goes a little longer you could look at the Adams Speedline 5 hybrid fairway.

    • I agree with @pganapathy about removing some clubs. I would recommend removing the 2, 3, 4 and 5 irons for now. Play with Driver 3W 5W 3H 5H 6 iron 7 iron 8 iron 9 iron PW ( you don’t have listed) 52 56 Putter Th 60 wedge can be difficult for new players, but you could keep that If your 3H is adjustable, increased the loft to be more like a 4H. Play with these on course and see if you can get a feel of the actual yardages for each club and especially the gaps between them. It may take 10 or more rounds. A par 3 course is helpful for determining the gaps in the irons and some woods too. A device like a Shot Scope H4 can really help give you your actual yardage on course.
