Think of your round as a series of Par 3's (hit more greens = score better)

I kind of posted this in another thread, but I have had this revelation of thinking of my round as a series of par 3's. I think most good players (I'm a 9.5 index) think they should par most par 3's if they have a 6 iron in their hand or less. So I have begun to think like this:

Par 3's - play as normal
Par 4's - Over 400 yards - probably hitting driver, unless their is a lot of trouble long. Under 400 yards - hitting 3 wood or my hybrid, trying to put it somewhere in the under 150 yard range (I hit my 7-iron about 155).
Par 5's - Stay short of any trouble on the drive, play a 5 or 6 iron up to 100 yards, get up and in for par easily, maybe make birdie.

Obviously if there is no trouble I am bombing the driver all day long, but I think this approach has really gotten me into the mentality that I can shoot in the 70's consistently (usually only have 1 or 2 rounds in the 70's per year).

When I was growing up, I was always taught to "let the birdies come to you, don't try to get them". In a sense, this is similar to what you are saying.

More golfers need to stop trying to shoot at the pin and pull off the perfect shot every single hole. Pros never take aim directly at the hole while giving no thought to what will happen if they don't pull the shot off; they are constantly trying to minimize damage. The average amateur is constantly getting yardages and lining up directly at the pin matter where it is. If only they'd play for the safe part of the green and PRACTICE PUTTING instead of trying to pull off the shot of their life on every single hole.

i try to play as safely as possible and "let the birdies and eagles" come. if i'm 265 out on a par 5... i'm not gonna try to lace a 3 wood... i'd rather hit a smooth 8 and be left with a full PW to the green of where I can really pick a spot and shot and play to my strength.

Its funny that you play a little game in your head to help your confidence because i do the same thing but its only when im putting. If you imagine that every putt is for par no matter how far away it is, i always seem to do better. Definitely reduces 2 and 3 putts. But i have to try this method out sometime.

Hahah.
Sorry, I can't agree.
I aim at every pin, I go after my birdies.
I go for every Par 5 in two, for the most part
I want to have a wedge in my hand on Par 4's, so I hit driver.
I don't know, I guess I don't understand yet.

As long as the fairway does not narrow, or bunkers/hazards/OB don't provide too great a threat, then I am from "the closer the better" school, but not the "take a chance on a hero shot" school. I never understood why you would want to be 120 yards out if you could be 50 yards out -- unless there are difficult slopes. Plus, I think I hit my driver about as accurately as my 3 wood so even if bunkers come into play, I might still shape a driver just to get the distance advantage. The odds are better the closer you can get if you are confident in your scoring clubs and wedges. I might change my mind when square grooves are eliminated.

If I had to pick any distance to get up and down from (assuming I'm not chipping) it would be 95 yards. It's my money distance and barring a bad bounce, I'm usually within 15 feet from there. Inside 60 yards is usually dicey for me as I'm always at a weird "feel" distance.

I always thought the same thing myself, part of me still does. But I read about how scoring goes down for golfers of different skill levels across the board the closer they are on their approach shot. I've been trying that out lately, trying to get as close to the green as possible (excepting water and sand), and it's definitely working. It may force you to work on your short game more, and those 30-70 yd shots do feel weird sometimes, but I think (with a little practice) that you'll usually end up closer to the pin.

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
