So saturday my friend and get the course for our usual saturday morning round. The guy in the shop says oh we got a new member he's a +1 handicap. He's going to be heading out with you guys so I say ok great. I see the guy he's around my age (25) so I'm thinking this is great. Long story short we finish the round and theres no way he came close to breaking 90. Yesterday I look in the computer and theres a 68 in for him on saturday. The pro came walking by and asked me about his 68. I said he didn't break 90 but if he is +1 and wants to give me 3 a round I will be more than happy to take his money. The sad part is they just got rid of member who claimed to be a 1 handicap and I never saw him break 80. I'm not sure how common this is since I've only been a member at 2 courses but do a lot of you see people who claim to be really low handicaps yet can't break 85. I'm not sure what you really get out of it besides having everyone not like you. I guess maybe the traditional sandbaggers are a dying breed.

It's one thing to post a score that is +/- a few strokes from your actual score but to post a score that is 22 shots lower than your actual total is crap. Not sure what he is trying to accomplish because if you tell folks that you are a +1 and you go out and shoot 19 over then your credibility starts to take a hit.

... I guess maybe the traditional sandbaggers are a dying breed.

lol... I remember the good old days when people posted scores higher than what they shot.

This guy is a colossal phony. Just hope you don't get paired with him in the blind draw team event.

Just curious, what do you mean by "got rid of?" Like threw him out of the club for lying and cheating?

I never understood the vanity hcp.
Isn't posting touranment scores supposed to adjust this?

By "got rid of" I mean it started with the sunday skins group putting his scores in for him after their rounds. He started getting upset because than he would have to enter in more scores around par to keep his handicap down. He complained to the pro and the pro told him that if they were entering what he shot he couldn't do anything and maybe its time to find a new course. He left about 3 weeks later and still owes the club the 700 dollars.

Rather than entering scores for him, I'd have thought that people would be lining up to play against him!

There's a guy who just joined our (associate) club who claims a 6 handicap. He hasn't played to a 6 for a long, long time. He just hasn't posted a score in forever. Well, NOW since our handicap chair is going to be posting his scores for him for our tournaments, he's going to see that number go way up.

He was in our foursome six weeks ago. I am a 21 handicap and he is a "6" and I beat him by 20 strokes.

Well for the club championship they would post his scores but a lot of our tournaments are match play. Plus he skips a lot of the other medal play events besides the club championship.

Is it possible he just had a horrible round? How was his swing?

I know a kid who regularly shoots around 80, but also shoots better than par as often. He's a +1.

He's constantly tinkering with his swing, changing drivers, changing wedges, irons . . .

I've seen him shoot 83 and 70 in the same week. He's had a Tournament round at 64.

His swing wasn't terrible or anything but everything he hit was a high weak fade. My thoughts on a +1 is that its not possible for you to be that all over the place. Everyone has bad rounds but this guy had no signs that he was remotely close to having the ability to shoot under par.

Guy must not have ever been a six then? I mean, even if you've not played for a long time, if you get to the point where you're a six handicap, you're considered a pretty good golfer. You just don't forget how to swing. Sure your touch may not be there and your distance may not be there. I mean no offense to you, but even after a long layoff, someone who

was a six should still be able to beat a 21 regularly (or at least compete). You beating him by 20 strokes leads me to believe he never really was a six. Unless of course he simply had a bad day and hit six or seven balls OB or something crazy like that?

There is no way a a + guy could ever shot that high. An 80, of course, 90 + no way. I am a legit 11 and a 90 is a horrid day.

What a joke. I don't understand why you would do that. Well I do, it is just a retard way to be.

If you were a low single digit handicapper and took a long time off the game (at least 5+ years), then its very possible to be hitting well over a 21 handicapper when you came back. Mentally, your game is still there, but physically it's long gone. But, you do drop strokes faster than the average golfer.

He laughed and said the members will have a field day with this kid. When I joined there as a 5 handicap 2 years ago all the members were asking me to play. Basically if you don't play to your handicap they start putting your scores in for you.

    • The dreaded 6 o'clock shadow. 🤣
    • 47+49 for a 96. Just lost it today. Two way miss off the tee. Could not hit a decent iron. Three putted like at least 8 holes. Not good when the short game is the best part of the day 😭😭
    • Phillyk is very close by. Ok, I understand how the watch and tags are meant to be used, but I was just curious how it actually works. I can't really think of any other way than what I mentioned above. No worries. If it works it works. I'll probably pick one up. My co-worker mentioned a free app called 18 Birdies which offers similar services. However I personally do not like keeping my phone in my pocket while golfing, nor do I want to be clicking around on the phone while out on the course. I toss my phone in my bag and leave it there until I am done golfing. Tapping a club head to a watch seems wat more convenient.
    • Yes, but not always the case. IMHO, green speeds are a huge variable and can effect score variation from week to week or month to month significantly. Our own course that is running at about 8-9 depending on the week/day, can run up to 12 (no kidding) in peak months around certain event, and most like me score 3-4 shots higher on an average, missing a lot of 3-4 footers. There are any PCC adjustments that I am aware of. Have you every played their course? I am betting $20 you will find some answers if you haven't already.
