My 23º has a steel shaft in it and I carry about 180-190 but the club goes so hot into the green that even if I land in the front it will just roll right through to the end. Compared to my 20º which has a graphite shaft and tends to sit down better than 23º. Can the rollout be attributed to the shaft or is it just the nature of the club in general? Forgot to mention the ball flight on the 23º is in between mid-high trajectory.

The flight of the ball is determeined by the shaft flex, torque, bend point, weight and over all club swingweight. You could get the same trajectory differences in any shaft combination, graphite or steel. My guess is your 20* hybrid shaft has a low kick point (high trajectory) versus your steel shaft with a mid-kick point.

Does the kickpoint dictate the backspin put on the ball?

Swing shape, face angle, groove "condition" will determine back spin more than anything else..

Well swing shape is pretty much same for my 20º and 23º and the face angle is a little more lofted. The grooves don't do anything in hybrids/woods and longer irons from what I've read on here.

My 17* hybrid is a TT DG S300 shaft, but I only really use it as an alternative driver seldom hitting it off fairway. I like the steel because it feels like it can control it better than graphite. Distance-wise it plays more like a 3H than the 2H that it is because of the shaft, but I really like the lower trajectory and control that I get from it for those tight driving holes.
