Lob wedge - when should I use it?

I bought a 60* lob wedge two summers ago and have used it primarily as my pitching wedge mostly because I didn't know any better. I loved the feel of it so I used it more than I should have... but recently I switched back to my pitching wedge because it has gotten me closer to the pin. So now my question is, when should I use this 60* club? Since switching back to my PW for most chips, I only use the 60* in the sand and when shooting up hill or over a bunker to reach the green. Is that correct?

Figure out how far you hit it with various length swings and use it when you need it.

I hit mine 65-75 yards and some times chip with it around the green depending of the variables. Tip: in a green-side bunker, short sided and/or in really firm sand? Use the 60°. SubPar

I usually only use my SW for chipping, however if there's some hazard I need to get over and then have the ball stop quickly, then I'll use my 60* LW.

I use it for high chips and generally for bunker shots <10m and if i have to go really high and still have to cover some distance, and the occasional flop.

I never really hit full shots with it. When i dont catch the ball perfect the shot is just crap, and my sucess rate with my sand or gapwedge with reduced swing is much higher. And since i managed to stop the ball within one bounce even if i bring it in low, there is no real need to hit it high into greens - even when they are elevated.

I use it for pitch shots 70 yards and in. For chipping, I use it most of the time as well. Except when I need to carry the ball prior to the ball roll more than 30 feet. With that much carry on such a delicate shot, I prefer my 52 degree.

I use mine for damned near every shot inside 40 yards. I deloft it for runners and pop it up to get over trouble. Mostly, I like it because I can take a mroe full swing and not worry about overshooting the hole (too badly).

I use mine for damn near everything inside of about 90 yards. I've tried to use other clubs around the green but I just love my 60* :). I use it for greenside bunker shots, chips, pitches, flops, etc. Really the only time I don't use it around the green is if I'm on a harder lie. In that case I'll use my 52* or 57* as they have a much sharper leading edge...with the 60* I'll often get some bounce off those hard lies leading to skulled shots.

All that being said, I definitely understand that this method is not for everyone. The average person with a 60* probably uses it mostly for flops and shots where there is not much green to work with.

Figure out how far you can hit it without resorting to a your fullest swing, then use it for shots shorter than that distance when you need to clear a problem area and stop the shot quickly. My rule of thumb is never, ever, hit a 60 degree wedge as hard as I can. If swinging that hard, drop down to the sand wedge or lob wedge. When given something like a 40 yard shot, hit the less lofted wedge if you don't need quick stopping distance; you will be more accurate in the long run (and I love to hit my 60, so this is not anti-60 talk.) I use the 60 for pins set in the front of the green or just over bunkers, and for pitches that hit on down slopes, and it is my favorite out of the sand unless I need the ball to run-out more.

I use mine around the greens when i need loads of spin because mine is spin milled. Also when i am in the rough by the green to get it out of there as quick as possible after impact. I have my 58* for full shots as it has high bounce and never use my 60* for full shots cause it has low bounce.

How's it working for you out of the bunker?

Obviously, you should determine a yardage from which to play a full lob wedge (like any other club).

In simplest terms, you want to be able to hit a pitch shot, a chip shot and a flop shop with the club.

In my mind, those are the four bare bones lob wedge shots. There are, of course, innumerable variations on the theme.

I use it from about 100 and in always. Couldn't imagine life without it. 52 degree is really the only club I truly "chip" with.

After watching Mickelson's video on short game, I now use my 60* for basically everything inside 60 yards. Chipping especially. I love it. So versatile. Like others have said, if I need a little more roll on the ball I'll use a less lofted wedge or something, or if it's a long bunker shot I'll use a different club, but otherwise, I use that 60 on almost every greenside shot.

I pretty much only use Lob wedge from the rough on 3/4 or less swings. I don't flop it though I just use the extra loft to get the ball up and out of the grass.

Chipping/pitching from a close-in downhill lie over something nasty or to a short pin. I"m becoming reacquainted with this great club. Just beware the fluiffy lie - so easy to go completely under the ball with disastrous results.

I always use mine in any situation where I want the ball to land and not roll far, such as when hitting over a bunker at a pin that's not far from the bunker. I've gotten to the point where I can, if neccessary, hit it 20 yards and have it stop within 3 or 4 feet, so it's very handy.

I also use it when I'm chipping onto a green that's sloping away from me, that way the steep decent angle doesn't combine with the slope and cause the ball to roll too much.

I also like using it for almost all of my approach shots, but for little chips (10 feet and in) I've started doing little bump-n-runs with my PW.
