Lucked out and got a tee time for a foursome and will be teeing off at 12:26PM. Think someone cancelled since its going to be 90º F. We plan on playing from the tips to see what it was like for the pros. Hopefully the course is still in good condition. My foursome will include a scratch, single digit and a 15 handicap golfer. I haven't shot over a 100 in long time but I'd be pretty happy with an even 100. Pretty damn stoked about my round tomorrow! Long Island National is up next!

Be sure to bring plenty of Vaseline.

I've never understood the "play from the tips so we can see what it is like" mentality but very cool that you got a tee time nonetheless.

How is it so hard to understand? I would love to play that course from the tips just to play the exact same course as the most famous pros.

Kind of like skiing down an olympic run, or playing a hockey game at madison square garden.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I don't understand the play from the tips thing either. I'm also surprised they would even let people do it. When I played Merion, Pine Valley, and some other courses they actually asked to see our index. Basically anything over a 3 to 5 depending on the course was not allowed to play from the tips.

The problem is you're not the famous pros. The pros weren't hitting driver, 3 wood into every par 4. I mean if you think about it kind of takes all the fun shots out of it.

Its just my humble opinion

Even from the regulation tees its 73.1/140 (championship is 76.6/148); its gonna be one tuff track . A 96 or less will be playing to wrx_junki's handicap or better. Take pics!

Id be surprised if the course is very playable at all. US open conditions more or less destroy golf courses, but all of the rain they had might of saved it from getting burnt out.

If your round is on friday or weekend, they're probably not going to let you play from the black tees. I havent played the course since they changed it for the open, but im curious to how the course feels now. Im going to try to get in a round or two at Black in the fall.

I think I shot a 97 last time I played the Black but that wasn't from the tips. When I watched the US Open Challenge I wondered what I would shoot and now I'll find out. I guess different mentalities for different people.

Well I'm off to play and hope I make it out of there alive.

Maybe I'm not smart enough to understand it?

You're still playing the same course the pros play. No one will think any less of you because you didn't play the tips. That's what I don't understand; especially on the Black course. It's hard enough as it is, but going back to the tips and playing at 7500 yards is just crazy unless you're a damn good golfer... unless you just enjoy punishment while you're on the golf course? As long as you don't hold me up if I'm behind you, you can play the tips and shoot 150 for all I care if that's what makes you feel good. I still just don't get why you wouldn't play the tees that has the best chance for you enjoying your round, that's all.

No. Its a 100% public course. They'll take your money no matter who you are. But realistically, if youre not at least a 12 handicap, you shouldnt really be trying to play that course. Its the reason why every time ive played there the round has taken almost 6 hours to complete.

Yes, I was just looking at the Torrey Pines scorecard online because I might play it sometime and noticed that the championship tees are "by permission only". haha.

Last year my friend, who is a 6 handicap, played Torrey Pines about 2 months before the US Open. It was set up for the tournament. He played from the whites, which was something like 6900 yards. He said he would never have wanted to play a longer distance. To this day he hasn't told me what he shot there.

I'd love to play Bethpage Black. I pass by it all the time and I was also at the U.S. Open. But, since I pretty much stink at golf, I'll wait a bit until I get better to attempt it. Not because I'm worried about my score, but because I don't want to irritate anyone I'm playing with or who is behind us. But, I do want to play it before the Open gets back here just so I can have a good idea of what the pros are dealing with.

Maybe I'm not smart enough to understand it?

Well part of understanding is WANTING to understand. I'm not sure you want to understand... Scenario #1: How well can I match up to the pro's? And I'm not talking about calculating it via some other method. There is NO better way to compare yourself than keeping it as direct as possible. So by playing from the tips on the same course (no idea how the conditions compare) it's about as a direct correlation as you can make with a pro. "Hey... Tiger shot a 70 and I shot an 85... how cool is that?!?!" See... in all other situations you gotta compensate for so many things..... but in the case of Bethpage from the Tips. Like I said... it's not perfect, but it's the best you can do. Scenario #2: You're onto this one. I'm sure you'll agree that what people enjoy differs. Some people like shooting low. Some people like to be challenged (even if they already suck! this is along the lines of enjoying punishment). Some people could care less. Some people just enjoy playing, plain and simple. It's obvious that his party decided they'll get the most enjoyment out of the tips. When he comes back he'll let you know if it was a good decision or not. So they ARE playing the tees that give them the most enjoyment.... something support.

I thought that course has a big sign that says "For Accomplished Golfers Only" ????

You have a 15 handicap and you're playing from the tips, why do you want to get abused so much? LOL

I understand... I was being sarcastic in my last post. In your first scenario, it really makes no sense to me. I can already tell you how most everyone on this board will match up to the pros and it isn't even close. Saying Tiger shot 70 at Bethpage and you shot 100 (which is more like it for a 15 handicapper) isn't really showing you anything except how much better the pros are than the average golfer (which has already been proven time and time again). Seriously though, to each their own. More power to the original poster to play whatever tees he wishes. Like I said previously, I don't care what tees you play as long as you keep pace of play. If you're a 15 handicapper and you get enjoyment from playing a 7500 yard course and shooting 100, more power to you. I know if I was a 15, I personally wouldn't have any fun out there but again, it's not me. As far as some people liking to be challenged... I'd say mission accomplished from the tips at Bethpage Black.
