Ok heres my dilemma. Last week I wasnt playing so great because of putting but my swing has been consistent with what I usually do. My normal ball flight is a higher launch with a straight/5 yard draw. Then I went out on sunday to test out my new driver. I hit 2 good drives the entire day. Every single ball besides those would get this crazy slice going on.

On 12 I put 2 O.B.
On 13 I put 3 O.B.

It was ridiculous. Same goes for my irons though. They would all fade about 10 yards right of my usual target.

Anyone experience this as well and have the cure?

Oh yeah. I've had the same problem. My normal shot shape is also a slight draw. With a driver, it turns into a slight fade or a big slice--when I try to hit it too hard. I think it is because when I do try to hit it hard, my arms out race my body, thereby coming over the top and leading to a slice or fade. When I consciously control my tempo, it goes back to a slight draw.

For me, it is trying to hit it too hard that leads to fade/slice rather than straight/draw. Of course, I could be totally off in that it could just be that your shaft is too flexible for your swing.

Have you carefully compared the specifications on your new driver to the old? Is flex, loft, kick point and length the same?

Do you consider it a draw/fade when it takes off left or right, or curves left to right? or both?

draw/fade refers to the ball curving left/right (for right handed player).

If the ball takes off straight left (for right handed player), it is a pull. If the ball takes off straight right, it is a push. If the ball starts left then turns left, it is pull-hook or pull-draw, etc.

My new driver is actually a Ping G2 that I used before my Big bertha, but it was snapped in an unfortunate trunk incident I had it reshafted and regripped with a UST shaft and a golf pride grip.

But anyway its not only my driver that Im fading/slicing the ball with, its my irons too.

I havent had a chance to test the idea, but I think Im taking the club out too much during my backswing. It felt like that when I think back to it, and plus I noticed I was making good contact but cutting across the ball, causing it to cut to the right.

Could this be a cause?

If you're cutting across the ball, it'd only be a slight fade. Big slices come from an open clubface and there's lots of causes for it. Usually though it's being too active in the body and opening your shoulders during the swing.

Maybe cutting across with my irons and the latter with my driver. Or both with my driver. Ill try a bunch of things tomorrow.

I typically draw everything but have times when I start fading things out of nowhere. At least for me, it seems like when this happens my grip has gotten a little weak and being conscious of that and working on keeping it in a slighter stronger position helps close the club face a little sooner through impact thus bringing back my draw. It depends on your ball flight though. My draw usually just turns into a slight push with a 5 yard fade which is just the clubface staying a little open at impact. If you have a "banana slice" which starts off left of your targer and ends up right of your target (for the right handed player) then you're swing path is outside-in with an open club face.

Yes I know. It has to be impossible for a ball to start curving one way and then end up curving another way. A ball cannot start spinning the other way mid flight can it?

This slice starts on target but then scoops up high and way to the right.
It looks good at first then BAM. Its gone.

Who said anything about curving one way and then ending up curving another way? Pull/slice happens when ball starts straight left and then curves right. Push/hook happens when ball starts straight right and then curves left.

    • I would recommend spending some time at the range and film your swing. You can post it in the Member Swings thread. At the range, you can figure out how to control the driver a bit more. We can offer some pointers once you post in the Member Swings section.
    • With the H4 or the watch, you tag the club before hitting by putting the tag next to the device. The tag is on the club butt end. After a round, you don’t really think about it too much. You just do it. I don’t know how far you are from @phillyk, but he may know an instructor in your area.
    • So the biggest issue right now is marrying the hands down with an athletic turn. I can get stuck not turning. Things get interesting from there.

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
