Hey all,

I'm in the market for a 3 hybrid, and possibly a 4 hybrid as well. I found someone selling a used Callaway X Hybrid, but he explained that the stiff shaft might not be good for someone with a slower swing speed like me, and the other hybrids he had for sale were all somewhat difficult to hit for a high handicapper.

So I was wondering if I could get some recommendations on an easy to hit, forgiving hybrid for a high handicapper with slow swing speeds who doesn't get too much distance.

Thank you!

Adams A0x series of hybrids might be the easiest for a high handicapper that I have seen. They are very forgiving and easy to hit. The new A07 is the most forgiving yet, but the A02, A03 and A04 are also very forgiving. The Cleveland hybrids are also pretty easy and Nike Sumo hybrids are also well liked. Your best bet is just to try as many different models as possible and see which you like best (avoid those that emphasize words such as 'tour', 'workability' and 'controlled trajectory' as these usually indicate they may not be as forgiving as you would like.

I just picked up a Bobby Jones hybrid and it's ridiculous how easy to hit it is. I get more distance and a higher ball flight than my old hybrid. And when I mishit it, it still goes quite a ways. And I got it for $99. Only negative is old-school headcover.

I found a good deal on a Callaway X Hybrid Neutral, but it has a stiff shaft. Should this scare me off or should I hope that my swing speeds will improve as I become better (i'm taking lessons atm and working on getting a fundamentally solid swing).

I have Nike Sumo 2 #2 Hybrid and a Nickent 3dx #4 hybrid - both are incredibly easy to hit.

I have had some very good experiences in the last couple days with the cobra dws baffler 1 iron replacement. Its 16 degrees and i hit it as far as my 3 wood but its easier to hit than the 3 wood.

THis is the hybrid that I carry, and I find it rediculously easy to hit. I have mine with a TT lite XL shaft.

http://www.hirekogolf.com/hireko/ord...1040/0/0/0/0/0

To give you some ideas of distance, I hit a 7 iron 155ish, and i hit this club 205 off the turf and 210-215 off a tee.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

I'm going to 2nd this wonderful suggestion. I've hit the Q2, and every other thing Hireko makes too. It is especially easy to get up and going. I don't get this specific model though, but got the Acer XKs w/Cadence True Ace shaft. I went with the later b/c for me it was easier to hit off a tee than with the Q2.

Price is good too, plus LH models.

Here's a deal from Rockbottom on a LH 21 degree hybrid (Nickent calls it a 7wood)
http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/nicken...LAID=340453400

I like the Acer/Hireko clubs, but when you add the shaft/grip you might want to the order, the final price could be significantly higher.

Nike Sumo2.

I have to agree completely.

It's funny though, I can hit 4hybrid so much easier than 3hybrid....so much easier. Both are great sticks....I don't plan on changing anything with either through 2010....just replace the grips and keep gaming them.

Still cheaper then an Adams or Nike club. My only complaint with the Hireko clubs is the paint quality isn't as good as top OEM's. I have several chips on my Q2 hybrid because I didn't have it in a cover for the first several weeks I owned it.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
