So I recently purchased a used 33" Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless Newport 2.5 lefty putter. I kind of prefer putters that are 34" or more to my liking 35" (since i'm like 6'2").

I was thinking about lengthening it 1 or 2 inches. What can people tell me about this? I heard it isn't hard to do. Could my local Golfsmith take care of this for me? and should I trust them to do it lol. Any idea how much this should cost, and if I could get it done in a single store trip or am I going to have to drop it off? Will the grip be intact and sellable afterwards or is it going to get ruined?

It has a black Ping grip on it as well, and I kind of wanted to get a new grip put on it since the grips going to have to come off for the extension anyways. What do you guys think? Any recommendations for grips? Can I do this as well as Golfsmith or am I going to have to send it in to Scotty Cameron? What do you guys think about fatter grips versus normal grips? I saw some Scotty grips on eBay for around $25 so I was considering that.

Thanks

Lefty Golfer!

I'm not sure how much it would costto get an extension on the grip, but I just went to my local Golfsmith to get a putter regripped and it cost me $5.79 plus tax as well as labor. Total was $9.02. The Scotty grips there were $15. I think it's around $3 for the labor.

I inquired at another golf shop near me for cutting down rather than lengthening and it was $5 if I remember correctly for the labor. My guess is that you will pay a few bucks more for the lengthening (assuming they can do it). As far as the fatter grips, I personally like the midsize grips more myself. I just purchased a putter on ebay and it had a fat Winn grip and it wasn't for my liking, but my coworkers loved the really fat grip that it came with. This is a personal choice IMO. Hope this helps.

It is relatively easy. If you are capable of removing your current grip, the extentions are available very inexpensively, based on the butt diameter of your putter. They are epoxied it and then cut to your desired length. You can even reuse your old grip, if you wish. Any golf repair shop can do this in minutes.

Did you notice a difference in feel or sound or anything with the extension in?

No difference in sound. The new grip makes my grip feel a lot more solid, and I'm a lot more comfortable standing over the ball because of the extra length. I also had it weighted (he put some tungsten powder down the shaft, then heated it so it would stay at the bottom) so it feels a lot different.

If you really want it to feel good spend a little money and add a heavier putter shaft. ($30), then back weight it ($30). I just did that to my older Scotty Cameron. I made a 40 footer, 3 10footers and all of my 3 footers yesterday....plus I took my large grip off and went back to standard...feels much better

Ah that is sooo tempting! My biggest issue with my putter currently (a junior set putter P.O.S., the Scotty in my signature is on its way) is how unbelievable light it is. Makes hitting any longer putts extremely difficult!

What exactly is back weighting it? Could I just do one or the other to save some cash? What about lead tape?

I've backweighted a few with lead tape. Problem is it takes alot of lead tape. Just have to cut about 3 inch strips and put them inside the shaft. It is cheaper and it will work just as weel but it's not adjustable. However, once you get it the right weight then that doesn't matter. If you search google you can find different weight kits. Some of them can be added to an existing grip by drilling a hole in the end once the grip is installed. Others come with a drip pre-installed. Good luck. Once you do this you can't putt with a putter without it. It makes the hands really stable as you swing the putter.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
