when have you had the most fun in a round? where even if you hit a bad shot you were able to shrug it off and say "you know what, i'm playing golf in good company (or possibly by yourself) and i'm having a great time doing it." basically, where it's a lot more about having a good time and a lot less about shooting a low score.

one of my most enjoyable rounds was yesterday evening. i played with my father, my friend greg, and greg's father. we played 2-man scramble teams as fathers vs sons. i wasn't sure how well my father was going to play, because he is just now able to play golf again after knee replacement surgery several months ago. i could tell my dad was really enjoying himself, which is something i don't get to see much these days as he has a lot of health issues (beyond his knee surgery) and has to take care of his 89 year old mother as well. i think that may be what made it so enjoyable for me - the simple fact that my father was, for once, able to enjoy himself.

course, it also helped that i felt i played some pretty decent golf in view of friends/family, hitting 5 out of 7 fairways for the nine and 5 of 9 GIR. i got to show off a bit. :)

and just for the record, greg and i gave our dads a pretty good little back-and-forth during the nine holes - we won five holes, our dads won three holes, and we halved the last hole.

Actually for me it was when i was alone and probably around 40 degrees outside. It was a sunny day and it didnt feel that bad, and i was literally the only one on the golf course. I just plodded around hit my shots and chased them. Its always fun playing golf, but this was a day remember more than most.

I really enjoy playing with a group that just "clicks". The kind where we all play with the same etiquitte, at the same pace, and everyone can laugh at their own mistakes. A strong, dark beer and a good cigar makes it that much more enjoyable.
I also like to play with my wife and daughter. However, it usually takes 5 minutes from my tee shot until it's my turn again.

My dad and I went out to the course we normally play when he is in town to play in their "noon game". It's basically handicapped stroke play with skins. I don't normally get in the game because the majority of the guys are 2-12 handicaps and they kind of frown on people getting in that are worse than that.

Anyway, I'm not in the game (dad is), but the course PGA pro and the guy in his cart offer to play $5 Nassau lowball with my dad and I since they are in our group. For some reason, my dad agreed.

He's about a 6 handicap and at the time, I was about a 16. The guys we were playing were around 8 and 3.

Well, front nine, we shoot 3 under lowball against their 1-over. My dad had three birdies (I birdied one of the par 5's along with him), but a few of my pars helped out.

The PGA pro there proceeds to tell us that we "shot as good as we can" on the front and asked to double the bets on the back and overall. My dad agrees. I proceed to birdie 11, 13, and 14 while my dad birdies 15 and 18 and we shoot 5 under on the back. They shot 1 under.

We smoked 'em something serious. Most fun I've ever had in a round. We were giddy from making all the birdies. Normally, we shoot around 72-73 for an average lowball round. A good lowball round for us is 2 under. This day, we shot 8-under. He shot a 71 and I shot an 83. He had 5 birdies on the day and I had 4. I rolled in putts from different zip codes I was putting so well. Seriously, probably the single best putting day that I've ever had. I can only think of one day that got that close. I had 5 putts of 25 feet + that went in that day.

At one point on hole 14, my dad looks over at me and laughs cause both of these guys just look dejected. We're beating them by like 5 or six at this point. We laugh about how much fun it is as we're driving to my ball in the fairway around 125yard out. I quit laughing, get out of the cart, grab my gap wedge and hit a shot that is tracking right at the pin. It lands behind the hole and spins back to about 6 inches. My dad damn near fell out of the cart from laughing so hard. Needless to say, tap in birdie. Dad birdied the next hole and 18.

To this day, they won't let us live that down out there.

SOOO much fun.

My brothers are scattered about the midwest. We get together once a year and play for "the green jacket." My younger brother bought an old (ugly) green jacket at a St. Vincent's store and that's the reunion prize for our "brothers' golf outing." Both my brothers can kick my rear pretty good and they take pride and joy in doing so.

In 2006 we decided to play this one course that had 3-nines; 27 holes for the green jacket. That day my son rounded out the foursome - but wasn't part of the Green Jacket, just golfed with us. I had a day, well ... I shot 40-40-40 and beat my older brother by 4 and my younger brother by 2 ... setting that green jacket on my shoulders in the bar afterwards was sweet joy!!! Having my son there was a bonus!

Crisp fall day in Pennsylvania when I first learned how to play 10 years ago.

My parents came to visit me from California and took me out to a local muni course. It was the first time I ever touched a club. I was making a decent contact and was doing pretty well for the first timer.

On par 4 370 yd dog-leg right 9th hole, I hit a 5-wood (PowerBuilt persimmon head) over the tree and in the middle of the fairway leaving 100 yds to the hole and parred my very first par.

That was all it took to get me hooked on this game. I have been playing ever since, but I remember that crisp fall day like it was yesterday.

Wailea Emerald course this past My 26. I was a walk on and went out with a group that loved the game and were all 5 and under. We played at a relaxed pace and all played well. The enjoyable part you ask? I won the nassaus and the course was drop dead wonderful. If you are ever there, you need to play this course. Dinner at the restaurant was great as well although a little pricy.

Whenever I play 9 holes with my five year old son. It's like Christmas morning each and every time.

I wish I could bottle and sell his pure joy - man, I'd be a rich man in $'s (to add to my other "riches" from just being with him).

Early this summer, my brother and I played an early morning round. It was a very relaxing round, we both played very well, but we just walked, talked and played good golf.

The most memorable day was when me my dad and brother played 18 at Magnolia Creek in Pearland, TX. My dad and brother are not very good, but it was fun. After that we went to Hooters to eat lunch, then off to a houston Astros Game.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

This past Sunday. I played with a friend of mine in a 2 man scramble. We chipped in 3 holes in a row. Then two holes later I backed up a sand wedge from 100 yards out into the hole for an eagle on a par 4. We shot 10 under and won $345 each....a great day!!!!

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
