I recently had my driver and irons reshafted. But now Im thinking about doing my wedges. What is a really good wedge shaft? I heard you want an extra stiff shaft for wedges regardless of your swing type because of the resistance in the rough, sand, etc... is this true?

i have the same shafts in my wedges as I do in my irons.

KBS and Rifle both make a wedge shaft that is supposed to increase spin, maybe give those a once over.

Wedge spec shafts are usually S200 and S400 Dynamic gold shafts (at least that is what I have been told) but i wouldn't take to mean you need those types of shafts.

I guess the question for you is, what do you generally do with your wedges? Do you hit full shots with them? Do you only use them in and around the green? A shaft that is matched to your irons will make them feel like your irons.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

valid points. I guess I do a mix of both full shots and short green shots. Im currently reading some reviews on the Rifle Spinners and they seem to get good reviews, may give them a shot

A stiff will help as it usually comes stock with the best wedges.
Project X shaft or Dynamic Golds are fairly popular on Tour.
You could also try the Rifle Spinners

Why is it that you want to reshaft them???

Scott,

The wedge flex topic was discussed here about a year ago. Check out a very interesting post by BLADES4ME on Aug. 8 2008 Re: Wedge Flex vs Stiff Flex? He describes using spinner flex shafts on his wedges. I got new irons this spring, and the flex on wedges came up. A golf pro and a club smith at different shops both said "wedge flex" is between stiff and regular, to give the wedge a softer feel. This would be the equivalent to a 5.5 flex Project X shaft. A poster from another site contacted True Temper, which said their wedge flex was basically an S200 shaft. Other things to consider: Kick point of the shaft, bounce angle of the wedge clubhead. Among the major club manufacturers, Callaway X-Tour and X-Forged, and Cleveland C-family wedges are all available with wedge flex shafts. Local golf shops which stock these upper-end wedges have about half in wedge flex shafts. Titleist/Vokey has a variety of S flex shafts available, plus Project X rifle. (For Ping, TaylorMade, and Nike, I can't remember). I have a wedge flex shaft in my 56º Callaway X-Forged. I don't notice much difference from my other wedges with Uniflex shafts. As others have asked, how do you use your wedges? What is your wedge strategy? Lots of full shots, mainly partial shots around the green, or a mix? If you have a golf pro, you might seek his or her advice.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • I’ve recently started KBs too and really enjoy it. I have one day of armour building complex and one day of a mobility routine. Adding in a speed training day too.    which routines do you do @Elmer
    • Again, I’m not an expert so take it with a grain of salt My question is whether laying back even further becomes too conservative and that strategy is suboptimal as a result? Essentially what’s the cost of guaranteed longer second shot vs the x% risk for hitting the bunker? I think the optimal way to answer the question is looking at strokes gained, in consideration of the hazards and penalties, and picking the strategy that maximizes SG off the tee. I’ve seen some apps that do this but I’m not sure how accurate they are.   And again, asking all this so I can learn what I should be doing in these situations rather than questioning your approach Bill. I would give an example of the course I’m joining this year where I plan to aim at the bunker, but I don’t want to take over your swing thread any further!
    • What @DeadMan said. From the satellite it looks like there's tall grass to the right, long of the fairway post-dog-leg. But left it just looks like regular rough all the way to the neighboring tee boxes. If that's true I'm aiming left edge of the green and bombs away every time, hoping for a 30-70 yard up and down opportunity.
    • What's the case against blasting a driver at the green? I'm guessing it puts the penalty area/fescue too much into play, but if that's just standard rough around the green, there would be a good case for it. If it's not driver, then I agree with your approach. The one thing I would add is to shade your aim towards the bunkers vs. center of the fairway. Hitting out of a bunker is (marginally) better than a penalty drop.
    • Yes, if you are gonna layup, then layup. No need to nickle and dime a few extra yards and bring bunker back into play.
