I say maybe... I am pretty sure he will win more majors than Jack, that is when I think we will really be able to say that he is the greatest ever...

I hope he becomes the greatest of all time. I hope I get to watch him thoughout my lifetime (we're the same age) shattering records and waving at the majors record in the next 6-10 years. I hope he is still playing golf at this level for a LONG time so we get to be excited about watching him do the things only he can do on a golf course.

The only reason I put maybe is because, tragically, anything can happen to a golfer to affect their game at any time. Duval and his equilibrium and vertigo battles. Paine Stewart and his tragic death. I hope nothing like any of this does happen, but you never know.

Is Tiger the best in golf? Unarguably yes. Let's watch a few more years before we say best ever, but his odds for reaching that one day are damned good.

Yes he is. Even if he retired tomorrow people would consider him the greatest for what he has accomplished. 10 more years and 11 more major victories and he'll just be 40. Scary thought.

it's not as simple as you'd imply DD... I think that:
Jack WAS the greatest
Tiger IS the greatest
..... WILL BE the greatest

( just to start another heated discussion I've suggestion for the "...." :
I heard one of the PGA players say about Michelle Wie "I played with Tiger when he was 16. Yes, he was winning Junior championships, but she's MUCH better at 16 than Tiger was..."

Its hard to compare different generations, but my vote is still for Jack. Although the overall talent level of the tour today is much deeper than in Jacks prime, I think Jacks consistant rivals (Palmer, Watson, Trevino) were much better than Tigers are (Mickelson, Els, Singh). I suppose thats why Jack has 19 major runner-ups and Tiger has ,what 1 maybe?

As of now, Jack Nicklaus is still the greatest of all time. Until Tiger wins more majors and tournaments, I'll say the same thing.

Like Rafi said, Tiger will probably go down as the best of all time, but it still hasn't happened yet. You never know what the wheels of fate have in store for any golfer....or any human being for that matter.

Best ever to age 30 at this point, but needs to keep it going a little while longer. Definitely fun to watch.

“Back when I played in high school, golf was considered nerdy. Now, really good athletes are playing. The game is popular all the way across the board now, from young to old. … When Tiger came on that was a big, big lift. Ed Fiori said it best, ‘Boys, there’s a new sheriff in town’ when he first saw him play. To have the record he has and to be doing what he’s still doing with the depth of the competition now is impressive.”

Fred Funk, discussing Tiger’s impact on the game.

The style of physical and mental preparation that Tiger has popularized and the growing interest in the sport has increased the talent depth of the fields beyong what it was 15 years ago. Every tournament he plays is harder than before, competitively speaking. There are a lot more young guns out there there used to be.

Bury me with a golf glove in my pocket - just in case!

I don't know that Bobby had the same competition as we see today (or that Jack saw). It quickly developed, I grant you that, but not until the early 40s did most pros begin to care more about "tour events" than their steady paying club jobs.

I think one way to measure a man is by his competition, and in golf it may be one of the best ways.

Let me put it another way: I'd have a good shot at being the best golfer in the world if there were only 10 golfers. Bobby played in an era where there were not quite as many players capable of beating him as there are today. That was either because he was that much better or because the others, his peers and competitors, were that much worse. I think it's more the latter. Suffice to say, Bobby in his prime vs. Jack in his prime vs. Tiger in his prime... I'd have to rank 'em right backwards: Tiger, Jack, Bobby. But they're separated by just that little distance, the width of a comma or so.

...discussing Tiger’s impact on the game....

that's a very valid point - the impact on the game. Tiger is hands-down the biggest of all time. Nobody draw the crawd to the game like he does, nobody changed the whole approach to the game like he did. Great point Baynative

When it's all said and done...Yes, Tiger will be the greatest of all time. Like Erik said, I think that Tiger in his prime is slightly ahead of Jack in his prime.

He still has 7 majors to go to catch Jack, but I think Tiger will do it in the next 5 years.

Fairways and Greens.

Watch some of the old films of Bobby Jones and you will see what talent he had. He was playing with old stick shafts and thin blades and I've seen him hit a 3 iron over 200 yds with uncanny accuracy. If he wasn't the best, he sure should rate up there with them. Alot of golf as we know it belongs to him, Jack and Arnie. They also had to make it financially from the ground up. They didn't have 60 mil placed in their lap before they even hit one ball on the tour.

Golf is not a game, it's a way of life!
