I'd really like to know why womens golf cant seem to draw the crowds like the men do. I love watching the girls play. In many cases they are far more interesting and colorful than the men. Besides, when was the last time you ever saw the entire Ryder cup team crying?
AND.... my wife loves me to watch ladies golf cause whenever I see Paula or Natalie play she gets lovin that night! (pretty pathetic eh?)
Why wouldn't the Solheim have been on network TV? Nothing against The Golf Channel but everyone knows where the weekend goes on TV. The Wyndham Championship over the Solheim? You have got to be kidding!

I think for the most part womens golf is pretty drab for a number of reasons.

1, media coverage is poor, even the people announcing the event seem to want to be somewhere else.

2, women don't bomb the ball 350 yards

3, there is no Tiger

4, there is no Phil

5, there is no Tiger

6, Gulbis and Kramer aren't in bathing suits. I know that sounds bad, but its true.

I enjoy watching it, if PGA isnt on. But I would honestly rather watch the Champions Tour...

The honest answer will start a huge, nonsensical conversations among people.

It really comes down to that it's a male dominated culture. Men, in general, don't admire or respect the accomplishments of women and society promotes this chauvinism and are apt to let ego get in the way and think to themselves "I can hit further than that" and similar attitudes. Watching women succeed, frankly, scares a lot of men since it is the roll of the man, not the women, to be successful in this culture. And since men are the rated viewer, networks don't find in profitable to pick it up. So it becomes second rate programming for golf enthusiasts only, such as ourselves.

That and women aren't as good as men.

Uhh, guys don't cry.

The problem for me is that it is just flat out boring. I try and watch it, I just can't. Too many players hitting a 7-iron 160, or a hybrid from 200, or running a 3-wood through the green on a 500 par 5. I can do all that. Am I better than those on the LPGA? Hell no, not even close. But if I am going to watch something for entertainment I want to see something that I can't do. I want to watch Usain Bolt run the 100 in 9.58, I want to see Vince Carter dunk over a 7 foot Frenchman, I want to see Pujols hit a 450 foot HR, I want to see Padraig hit a 3 wood 300 yards out of a bunker to the green on a 600 yard hole. All things I can't do. If I want to see a someone hit a 6-iron on a 170 yard par 3 I'll take my video camera to the course next time I play. And as sp33d mentioned -- there is no Tiger.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Well Enduro, I have to respectfuly disagree. I'm as big a pig as anyone and I love watching the girls play. Besides, golf isn't a male dominated sport. There are tons of lady golfers and as a rule the ladies and men don't generally compete against one another. Sure, a couple of the ladies have tried to compete with the guys in a few PGA events but none really were there to stay. There is nothing wrong with wanting to measure yourself against the worlds best.

Uhh, guys don't cry.

That's actually why some people promote you should in fact watch women's golf. Their game much more resembles the game most amateur men play and you'll gain much more watching their swings and strategies than you will watching a male professional.

The other thing is, you can't do what they do. They're creating a lot more power per pound than any of us. Their efficiency is well beyond ours. But your ideas pretty much sum up the general attitude of "I can do that" without looking at the larger picture. I won't hold it against you as it's a cultural and social conditioning really. But it's hard to deny we live in a male chauvinist culture. However, far less chauvinist than many others across the world to be sure.

Actually I think there are a lot of hot chicks on the LPGA like Morgan or Michelle (great legs) But Gulbis and Creamer are the hottest.

Not only is golf male dominated, but our entire patriarchy culture is. This is well documented. As a white male I think it's important to understand how people that aren't of that profile fit in and empathize with their identity in this culture.

The fact is most males don't treat or respect women as people, competitors, etc but rather as sex objects. As demonstrated in your closing remarks about why you love the game, for instance. It's why when a women doesn't fit a males ideal (submissive, beautiful, obedient, etc) they get labeled harshly. Thinking of examples will be left as an exercise to the reader. I really don't want to go too far off topic because frankly, the audience at this site isn't worthy of this debate. I know I won't get any interesting feedback anyways. Not before cursing from someone I'm sure. I'll just leave it at I've been conditioned to respect the accomplishments of men and see those of women as inferior and potentially damaging to my ego. I can't help this conditioning because it has been ingrained since birth. Women, being the inferior sex to my conditioned mind, will never live up to the standard of men and I will only watch them compete in what should be androgyny, as ideal sexual avatars. I don't respect them as people, but as the servants in the global patriarch. That and men ARE better at this particular game. Heck, it was designed for them!

Enduro my friend, I love looking at lovely things including women and don't look at them as inferior or objects or any such thing. I don't know where you got your life training but you sound like a person living in the dark ages. I don't mean to be dis respectful but you need to look at yourself and maybe re evaluate your thought processes toward the ladies. I golf at least three times a week and see that at least 1/3 of the people on the course are ladies. They certainly don't threaten my ego or position in the world and I look at them as a total equal. Are they as strong as I am? Probably not but what the hell difference does that make.
So far as the responses you may get from the people on this golf blog are concerned, lighten up. Most all of us are just here to share ideas and pass the time or have some fun. And yes, I am a white male brought in a white male dominated culture and still don't fear that a woman is trying to take my place in the world and if she does, it just means that she was a better man than I was.

I enjoyed watching the Solheim cup this weekend because the golf was actually good quality! I really couldn't give a s*it what club they use for the shot, the fact that it's a quality shot is entertaining and engaging enough.
When there's no atmosphere in womens golf, it isn't worth watching but the atmosphere was great this weekend

The announcers. I can't even watch PGA golf with the Golf Channel announcers. They're all too "nice", and sound like they're listening to music, or doing something else while they broadcast, almost a lack of caring in their voices.

I agree 1000000%. I love watching the girls play and if Paula's in the mix, the LPGA gets the nod over the PGA (provided it's not a major).

Problem #1

I have to be honest, this just confuses me. Female athletes are held to a completely different standard than everyone else. Gulbis is amazingly attractive

for a female pro golfer . But she'd be, like, the seventh hottest girl in a random bar in NYC on a Friday night. Maybe there's some attraction gained from that she plays a sport I happen to love. But not enough to keep me watching second tier golf.

for the same reason why WNBA, MLS and AFL aren't top tier... not that interesting (to the majority). no offense to anyone, but thats just the way it is. NHL lost a lot of the coverage and is slowly making its way back(versus tv). AFL is done and gone now. but LPGA gets coverage on golf channel, sometimes...

btw i caught clips from solheim on sportscenter. that USA chant was like something a 10 year old wrote... come on... that was pretty sad....

Females in general have a much lower attendance rate to sporting events than men in most sports as showed in studies.

And as one poster said before - no Tiger, no Phil. Its not enough in competitive sports to have eyecandy running around - everybody can offer that. You need to have a story to tell, that stands out, that awwws the public. And currently you dont have ONE single female golfer that can do that - Lorena brought some hope, but she isnt running well at the moment either - and even in danger loosing her number 1 ranking.

Just look at what happend to TV ratings after Jordan was no more: http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/04/20...1987-2007/3413

Or look at a regular PGA event without the big names - lower attendance, much lower TV ratings......

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
