While the majority of the people I have encountered on the course and pretty nice you will still find the occasional A-hole. Sorry you had the misfortune of running into one today.

Wow... whizzed one by you while you were on the green on a short par 4?

This post confuses me. That sucks for you though. You shoulda teed it up and hit it back.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Did you ok it with them before jumping holes? If not then maybe he just didn't see you and/or wasn't expecting you to be there.

It was the second hole after I played through. The first hole was a par 3, and I hit a bunker shot thin over the green as they reached the tee. I don't think they were pleased at making them wait, but those are the kind of shots a player of my ability makes when he's trying to rush through a hole.

If you cut them up a bit I can understand a bit of frustration but that's no excuse for him being a d**k; driving through like that is plain stupid.

I hate when people let you play through then cant even wait for you to finish the hole by your self then they get pissed off on the next tee because they have to wait for you.

if someone hits into me, I pitch their shot back about 40 yards... Not trying to hit at them, or damage the grounds (stomping ball into the ground like some), or steal their ball.

So just to be clear, you did ask if you could play through? If not, it was impolite of you not to ask. Either way it doesn't excuse them driving a ball at you.

1. if you 'skipped' ahead of them, it sounds like you didn't ask? did you ask to play through? if not, then you deserve it.

2. if it was the 'second hole after I played through' and you were by yourself, then what the heck were you still doing there? if you were playing through, you should have been going much faster then them and been done. if you 'asked' and played through, then I apologize and the guy behind was being a d*ck.

I don't think he deserved to have his life put in danger whether he was waved through or not but its harder to complain if you didn't do everything by the book yourself.

If you weren't waved through your biggest mistake was to believe that those players would show you good etiquette. I would have waited for you to clear the green even if you were getting in my way, but there is a percentage of golfers that would not. Don't put yourself in that position.

If you were legitimately in front of them and they did that, I would call the clubhouse.

I've had a ball zip between my legs before on a fairly short par 4 - that could've ended up much worse!

I had my 9 iron in my hand, and was pretty close to chipping their ball into the trees, but thought better of it and just carried on :D

Less than a week ago I played in the Hendersonville, NC area while visiting family members. Prior to teeing off, I heard the head pro tell a fat guy outside the clubhouse that it would be a good day for his group to get a feel for the game, since the course wasn't crowded.

So I knew they were beginners, and they looked pure North Carolina country, but little did I realize what was in store for my dad and I, once that group was smack behind us.

From the outset they were running between shots, never the best sign. They had one cart but it seemed completely random, who was running and who drove. Finally there was a problem on the 4th hole, a 495 yard par 5. I hit my tee shot pretty well down the right hand side, leaving a 7 wood to the green. As I waited for the group to clear I told my dad, "This will test the patience of the guys behind us."

Sure enough, they had no clue to wait. The three of them hacked drives then continued to flail away, even when they were easily within distance. Once ball stopped about 10 yards behind me. I glared at them and thought they figured it out.

No such luck. On the next hole they slashed one into the woods, at least 30 yards beyond where my dad and I were standing, waiting for his shot to the green. At the next tee it reached new absurdity. The fattest kid ran up to us, before they finished the hole. "Excuse me sir, I lost my last golf ball in the lake. Can you give me a ball?"

My dad tossed him one, as we mumbled at the situation. Then within minutes they hit into us twice on the next hole, one smacking a tree to our left, then a line drive whizzing past my ear as I prepared to hit a chip shot. I looked back and they were no more than 75 yards from the green.

But it gets better. As my dad stood over a putt on that hole, the fat guy charged toward the green. "Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me sir. I lost my last golf ball again. Can you give me some more?" At that point it felt like Candid Camera. My dad is hard of hearing and was concentrating on his putt to such extent he initially didn't hear the guy. I stared at the guy as if to say, "You've got to be kidding," but he persisted. My dad told him sorry, it was tough luck.

As we played the next tee shot I looked back. They had disappeared, apparently headed to the clubhouse, deciding golf was over, once their total number of golf balls trailed number of players.

You and your father are like saints. I would have lost my temper long before......leaving them with a bad feeling for golfer-types.

    • I kind of like this interpretation especially if you think about it the unplayable rule would probably put you in a better spot.  using back on the line releief.
    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
