Well, I finally played Pebble Beach yesterday after a couple of times of trying to get on. During those trips I was dissapointed when the women in the the pro shop said, " You're welcome to hang around and if someone doesnt show up, you can take their slot..." When people are paying $400+ for a round, they're showing up...

I got to course 3 hours earlier to just hang around and soak it all in which I highly recommend. I went to the range, putted and text'd my friends to go on pebblebeach.com so I could wave into the webcam..

My plan all along was to play the tees that the 3some or 2some I would get paired up with decided to play. I was hoping not to play the white tees, but also wasn't sure if I wanted to play the tips, especially since I really wanted to enjoy the round and not have hybrids into every green. Anyway, the group they paired me up with were playing the tips and my caddie told me I could play whichever set of tees I wanted. I decided what the hell, let's do it and played the tips with a course and slope of 73.8/142!

All three of the guys in my group either hit their tee shots OB, or were blocked out my a small group of trees on the right. I've played the Old Course at St. Andrews and that was a nerve racking drive, but my knees were knocking! Anyway, I hit one of the best drives I've hit all year down the middle with a small draw. A bunch of people started clapping and yelling out, "Great Drive!" I'll never forget that drive.

I ended up shooting an 81 with a 38-43. Some of the holes on the back killed me, like 10 and 11. The 8th hole is a beast! I ended up having birdies on the 2nd, 4th and 7th. I made a sand save for par on 18. I did have some horrible shots when my tempo got really quick on a few shots, but all and all was really happy with my game.

I almost had a hole-in-one on #7. I knocked it to a foot.

This was by far the greatest course I've ever played in my life and was worth every single penny! Below is a video of my shot on #7 and #18

That is awesome man... I am jealous. You are right about stuff like that though, it seems like so much money, but when it is done, man is it worth the memories. Looks like a nice solid round too The videos posted are cool too.

Great that you enjoyed it. And to think that only a few weeks ago you were asking us if you should play it, wondering if it was worth it. As you saw, PB plays up to the hype.

So when is Spyglass?

Sounds like a great time and a beautiful day- congrats!
For a short par 4, the first tee is nerve racking. It's such a fishbowl. And 7,8,9,10,17,18 are 6 of the best holes in golf.

Yeah, clambake thanks setting me straight, I owe you a round if you ever come to Mass!

My flight was delayed and I could only get to Spyglass at around 3:30pm. They wanted to charge me $245.00 to tee off at 4pm and get in 9 holes if I was lucky...wasn't worth it to me. Instead I played Poppy for $42.00 and it took us 2 hours and 45 minutes to play 9 holes...painfull Im playing Harding Park this week since Im in San Fran now.

That's pretty cool man... 81 from the tips is respectable. While I have played a lot of nice course I have yet to play one of the truly historic ones. The closest I have come is Pine Needles (2007 Women's US Open), which is right down the road from Pinehurst #2. It is a classic Donald Ross, but it doesn't have the history of someplace like Pebble, Oakland Hills, Pinehurst, or Torrey Pines. I will most likely hit up Pinehurst #2 next year, and start picking off the big ones every few years after that. Do you have any other pics... if so post em'

I noticed nobody has ragged on my swing, which is a good thing, I think..lol

The only thing wrong with it that I can see is that you stand on the wrong side of the ball...

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
