i have to admit that so many things on the golf course irk me. the pace of play, the guy that sucks hard, the guy that hits before his turn, the unsolicited chatter, the course condition, unraked bunkers, pitch marks, etc.

from reading the boards, it looks like i'm not alone.

why are a lot of us like this? to those that can control these negative externalities, how do you not let it bother you? (other than "don't let that stuff bother you cuz you can't control it")

Slow pace of play is my biggest peev. If I had to play at a course that was full all of the time I'd quit golf. Can't stand the waiting 5 minutes or more to hit every shot. Doesn't happen much where I play, but when it does it throws my game way off.

i almost dont have a choice.. the course i play when im in LA is 6hr rounds. good course but slow. have to stay loose constantly. but what really gets to me out there is when i have a 10 or 12 foot putt and one guy has already putted up to about 3 feet and they either: 1. dont mark the ball and dont finish out. or 2. mark the ball and then right as im about to putt.. go to put the ball down and remove the mark so now im looking at a ball. that REALLLLYYY annoys me. I feel like a jerk if I say something but it bothers me a lot. MARK IT OR FINISH IT and if marked wait until ive putted!! thats my biggest pet peeve along with spitting. I see a lot of junior golfers spitting like they are playing baseball. that doesnt really sit well with me for some reason

Slow play and unfixed divots on the green are my only real peeves. What kills me is the guys who're obviously hitting triple digits who take forever setting up each shot. I played behind a group recently that had a guy, who I saw 3 putt a bunch of times (I know cause I was sitting watching him putt on every approach shot, all day). He would read the green from behind the ball, SLOWLY, then amble to the opposite side, read it slowly from there, then amble back behind the ball, read it slowly again from there. Then stroll up next to the ball, do that sniper rifle aim thing with his putter, put it back down, and then maybe 1 of 3 putts, step back behind the ball, re-read, and then re-sniper, then finally putt.

They were 2 holes behind by the end, on a SLOW day generally, and the foursome included a father and son, who, although the son was maybe 12 and playing from the blues, picked up on every green, so there were only two guys putting out in that group...

Unfixed divots and ball marks are what drives me crazy. I can live with slow play, to a point. Don't misunderstand, I hate it, but it is third or fourth on my list of pet peeves. The guy that stands 255 yards out on a par 5 and is hitting six, yet waits for the green to clear makes me batty.

I play very fast, as in when it's my turn I get up and hit. My choice of club is made while I'm walking up to the ball and rarely is the club not in my hand when it's my turn. On the tee, I'm teeing up and hitting while the other players are still jabbering about the previous tee shot. It's to the point where I just hit through their chatter because most of them don't catch on about how fast I move, even after seeing it for a few holes.

Some put it together and realize I'm going to go up and hit, pretty quickly whether they are chattering or not. The way I see it, if I'm moving that fast, the other players get a pass on talking when I'm hitting. Yes, I understand they should adapt and be courteous, but if I wait each time for them to shut up, I will end up throwing off my routine. So, I hit while they are talking.

Once in awhile, I get a real jerk who knows what I'm doing and will try and distract me for some crazy reason. I just tune that person out which often is more aggravating to that type of jerk.

I don't know if that makes me a spoiled brat, or not. If so, I will gladly accept my title.

Oh! Oh! I've got one! Howsabout a guy who took a bucket of range balls to the par-3 course, hit them all to the first green, went around the green picking them up with a shag bag, and proceeded to do the very same thing on the next hole, and the next, and the next, without repairing divots or pitch marks or letting people play through? I chewed that guy out and turned him in so quick. I've never seen anything like that.

I would likely end up getting arrested over something like that. Oh, my, my, my. I played in a scramble with a guy who didn't fix his ball marks and I chewed him out right in front of everyone. I still feel bad that I lost my temper, but I couldn't stop it this time.

i have to admit that so many things on the golf course irk me.

These that I made bold are mutually exclusive. If you have an issue with someone hitting out of turn then you are helping to promote slow play.

One of the major factors in slow play is NOT hitting if you are the first to be ready, regardless of whose turn it is. Watching players standing around waiting for someone to decide who's away when they could be playing their shot is one of the few things that drives me crazy on the course.

Pick your battles... most if not all concerning golf aren't worth it. I've stopped playing with groups that gripe too much because it isn't fun and I'm out there to have fun.

I'm pretty patient out on the golf course. I don't let many of the things you describe bother me at all. I don't care if people talk or are moving or whatever. I consider those kinds of distractions to be a mental challenge.

Generally speaking, I play against myself and not against my foursome, I play to have fun, enjoy time spent with friends, and to relieve stress and I have fairly firm grasp on my game and its limitations. I know I'm not going on tour.

The ony thing that gets me is extremely slow play. Not that the time it's taking upsets me but that it just really throws me out of rythm.

Most of the guys that I play with play "Ready Golf" out of the fairways. We putt in order of closest to the hole. We play "Ready Golf" off of the tee also unless someone makes a birdie or eagle. We just enjoy being together and talking trash!

Ditto, the only thing that bugs me is looking for my buddies ball all the time or the slow group ahead of us.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
