A topic came up at the range yesterday and it was about the best golfers hypothetical lifetime scoring average. Does any think the greats, Hogan, Sneed, Palmer, etc, scored a cumalative score of under par for their entire golfing lives? From jr golf to senior. Its impossible to know, but its an interesting question to ponder if anyone really ever beats the game.

Re: Did they really beat the game?

Par is just a number. Until someone scores an 18, there is always room for improvement.

Well..the rules of golf state that even par is winning or losing agaist the game. A score of 18 is never going to happen. I cant even do that on Tiger Woods...

I don't think the rules of golf say anything like that. Can you provide a reference?

Edit to add: I didn't vote because I have no clue what the answer is, but it is an interesting question.

They lifted golf's hood, did a walkaround, then took golf into the shop for a complete overhaul, custom paint, new engine, 22 inch rims (with spinners!) and somehow, someway, they installed a pop-up plasma TV with surround sound and a gigantic sub. Everyone turns and watches when golf drives by - ooooh, golf is so sexy now!!! When Arnie's drivin', that's how golf rolls.

hahahahah great analogy. But yea, nobody ever wins. Even if you do manage a career under par. I believe this for two reasons. One, the rounds as a beginner would add up wayyyy to high because think about it... a great round for a pro is maybe 6 under? Well we all started out as 100 being a great round (28 over). Sure you play more rounds as a pro but still, you're so far in the hole it's ridiculous. You would have to play ideally 5 amazing rounds as a pro just to erase one good round as a beginner, and that's not even counting your bad days at all skill levels. Secondly, even if you do somehow play a ridiculous amount as a pro to overcome your beginner scores, you never win. Ever. Everyone is always working on something. A part of their game or swing, mental toughness, course management. Who is ever happy with their golf game? No one. And even if you are, you're probably not good and just playing for fun.

So overall, no, you can't win. Ever. You can try, but you won't succeed, you can't even break even. However, I think is is why we all love this game so much. For the challenge.

Re: Did they really beat the game?

As soon as you go from thinking to yourself, "hmmm, maybe I'll go play some golf later..." - to thinking to yourself, "yea I'm definitely gonna go play some golf later." You just lost.

As far as a lifetime under par I think that it's not impossible. There are pros who are scratch golfers by the time they're like 12-13. Assuming they don't break that threshold in reverse until they reach 60+ (which I think is pretty conservative an estimate) thats alooooooooot of strokes under par. An actual solution would have to be probabilistic in nature and contain a certain degree of variation, but I think its possible.

But the real question at hand..... No. The game of golf is un-pimpable. It has a special members-only style jacket that makes it impervious to pimp. I lived with a kid junior year who had one. Pimpossible. End of discussion.

Re: Did they really beat the game?

This doesn't make sense. You don't necessarily "beat the game" by shooting under par. Course conditions change, your personal health and mental state change, "beating the game" (assuming that makes sense) might be shooting 6 over par on a given day, given certain conditions, for any given pro (you are using pros as examples). The premise is flawed.

Re: Did they really beat the game?

From Jr. to senior I said No. Now if it were only their PGA careers I'd have said yes.

Re: Did they really beat the game?

The game is unbeatable......

I submit that the great ones beat the field.....but not the game.

The paradox here is that the great ones actually drove their competitors to greater achievements....thus they strengthened the very field they dominated.

And, at times, that same field dominated them.

Re: Did they really beat the game?

I answered "yes", but I'm not sure I understood the question. I took it to mean "Do the greatest players lifetime scores ultimately add up to be under total par?" If that is the question, then yes, I am sure there are some elite golfers that have done this.

But in general I dont' see how anyone can "master" golf.
